My basketball team lost tonite, and I'm in a pissy mood. Time for DAWN OF THE DEAD (the original, of course)

Disappointing news about JOE 2. Makes no sense. All this does is give the film 8 months of stink to wallow in. Was one of the few summer movies I was looking forward to. As it looks now there's a fairly big gap in between PROMETHEUS and SAVAGES with not much doing. Guess there's TED but I have a feeling that's a high concept that could get stale pretty quick.

At least you're not a Pacers fan.

I see the Pacers bouncing back in Game 6. Game 7, not so much.

Any WALKING DEAD fans in here?  I'm catching up on the show, and this second season is just phenomenal.  Great television, and not just good for a show about zombies.

I'll have to give Mike's Murder a look.  Someone should try and do a 'Director's Vision' cut and sell it as a brave original.

I enjoy The Walking Dead.  I appreciate that it's not perfect, but I roll with it in any case.

How much did they waste on advertising? I know the Superbowl ad alone cost them 4 million.

I smell some EXTENSIVE RESHOOTS! Possibly with another director!

I thought of the very things you brought up.  If we do get a better film, then great.  I'm not sure anything will change, though.  They may just be trying to move away from the bohemoths that are dropping this summer.

When has this move ever led to a financial success?  It almost always leads to apathy when the film eventually arrives.

  • A Family Affair: Bringing Lethal Weapon to Life (HD, 30 minutes): Creating the look, world, characters and feel of the Lethal Weapon series. • Pulling the Trigger: Expanding the World of Lethal Weapon (HD, 30 minutes): Home video success stoked the flame for the Lethal Weapon sequels, but it took more than a hungry audience, an audacious director and a willing cast to make it happen. It required an ever-expanding story, new characters, new actors, and new obstacles for Riggs and Murtaugh to overcome, bigger action and set pieces, higher and higher stakes, and something more than "more of the same" to complement the original.

  • Maximum Impact: The Legacy of Lethal Weapon (HD, 22 minutes): "These movies defined a time and a place." Lethal Weapon 4 is front and center as Disc Five's fourth documentary begins, but it isn't long before producer Joel Silver, Donner, Gibson, Glover, Rene Russo and other members of all four films' production teams examine the franchise, look at the various social issues each film tackled, attempt to measure the series' cultural impact and, of course, touch on its legacy, for the actors, the filmmakers and audiences the world over.

Those look interesting, but I'm still pissed off that the Director's Cuts are not included.

Love SKY CAPTAIN. The first half is marginally better than the second, but still love the hell out of that movie.

What do you guys think about Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning? Hyams recently revealed that Van Damme has even less screen time than in 3, and Dolph only the same. Which means Scott Adkins is the lead, probably with Andrei Arlovski. Adkin's a hell of an martial artist and overall awesome, but still no leading mean. Not the caliber VD or Dolph are. Didn't they have the money to bring back VD in full, or was a limited participation the only negotioable deal?

Why put out something definitive the first time, when money can be made with another set?

Hyams has always said the screen-time was story based.  Everyone was filming for as long as the film needed.

Of course, we all would have loved a film with huge screen time for all.  I guess we will see when the film arrives.

I was never a suporter of Adkins as a leading man but I think he should deliver and be well directed in UNISOL 4 (because clearly Florentine is not an actors director and couldn't do much on NINJA).

Read that article they reference the other day and still don't know what to think about it.  It basically ignores any of the more recent Action movies and postulates that Action is truly a dead genre as we once knew it... or rather, ABOUT to die.  Kinda hard to argue.

I don't know, Adkins seems like he has a lot of potential as a leading man.  Having watched El Gringo the other day, I think he definitely has it in him to be charming, funny, or serious depending on what's demanded of him.  He has a sense of fun about him in that one I hadn't gotten out of any of the other movies he's done, and that shows me he could do right with a good project.  Obviously he's a very skilled martial artist, but so is Chuck Norris and that man's best movies arguably aren't such a great showcase for such skills.

Every little featurette is more fun then the actual film.  I would gladly watch these people talk for 90 minutes then watch this film again.  It could so easily have been much better.

I don't know if any of you are fans of The Projection Booth podcast, but they posted a mammoth 3 Hour 50 minute episode about First Blood!!!  It features interviews with Ted Kotcheff and David Morrell and it also discusses other First Blood related films (including Son of Rambow).  I haven't listened to it yet, but how can it not be a great listen?

I was disappointed my local video store didn't carry STONE COLD. I've never seen it <couldn't look past silliness of the Boz at the time>, and finally felt the need to rectify the situation. Looks like Netflix will have to be the way to go.

I still remember the celebration in this thread in the early days of it when Stone Cold was announced as finally being released on dvd. I blind bought it, and it's one of the first movies that I can thank this thread for revealing to me, as I probably would never have seen it if not for this thread.

Plus there's the immortal line "Take a look into the future chains YOU'RE NOT IN IT!"

I dig Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow. It's got some great ideas that aren't executed well, but overall it's a good try at re-creating 30's-50's sci-fi pulp, and the resurrected Laurence Olivier.

It really is one of those films that really goes for the glory and should get recognized for it. And as always, I don't need much of an excuse to re-post this trailer I slapped together:

Dig the trailer, Twitch.  I just started messing around with a video editing and effects program, Hitfilm.  Slow going, I'm so not technically inclined.

Just mentioned it recently, still indebted to Moltisanti for sending me his extra copy of STONE COLD, just because he's awesome.

What of this movie THE COURIER, which I just found out exists?  I'm going to check it out based on the cast alone, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Mickey Rourke, Miguel Ferrer, and Hugo Fucking Stiglitz himself, Til Schweiger.

There was a foreign language trailer for THE COURIER that came out some time ago, probably still on youtube. Didn't look too hot, though Rourke was barely seen in the trailer. It has been on the shelf for a while now.

I feel like I take STONE COLD for granted at times. I mean that's a movie where a priest is shotgunned through a stained glass window... DURING A BAPTISM! That's an actual moment in the film. What a triumph.

Anyway, guess we have a great excuse to enjoy The Doobie Brothers' music video for Dangerous, from the STONE COLD soundtrack:

Forgot to mention earlier that I got in my Amazon order of Gymkata, Gone Fishin', D.O.A., and TERMINAL VELOCITY.  I was going to watch Gymkata, but I decided instead to watch D.O.A. since it's been a very long time since I've seen it, and that was just the last half of the movie no less. The Blu-ray does look good.

Oh yeah, that's my favorite of the "Guys from the movie appearing in the music video" videos. Some have come close, but none have surpassed.

Morgan also has the Powers Boothe role in the RED DAWN remake, another one that has been MIA forever (for good reason, I'm convinced). I like him overall but he needs better representation or something. Anybody seen that Magic City show he has on Starz? No good.

The first 10 minutes of that movie are unadulterated insanity. First the Boz kicking ass in the convenience store, then the montage of bikers killing people...

Speaking of biker movies from 1991, I saw Cool as Ice last night. Uproarious. Possibly a more flamboyantly colorful film than Joel Schumacher's Batman movies, it's a strange mashup of Purple Rain, The Room, and a very special episode of Saved by the Bell with a few elements that could be seen as foreshadowing the work of Jody Hill in its own strange way. What you need to know about it so that you watch it before it leaves Instant next week:

-Vanilla Ice can't act his way through a drive-thru.

-He falls in love with a studious girl and the movie becomes Say Anything... with an extra chromosome and more fighting. Michael Gross plays her asshole overprotective father, a 180 from Steven Keaton and Burt Gummer, and the reason he's so uptight is because he's in the Witness Protection Program because he was a cop and pulled a Serpico on his corrupt colleagues.

-Cinematography by Spielberg collaborator Janusz Kaminski. Apparently he was so good with this he got the job for Schindler's List!

-Sydney Lassick shows up as a motorcycle mechanic who is persuaded to fuck up one of Ice's buddy's bike for shits and giggles.

-The romantic tactics he uses would be considered predatory today, stealing his love interest's black book, intimidating her boyfriend, and wandering into her family's house for no reason. Think Fear if Mark Wahlberg refused to be portrayed as a psycho and William Petersen isn't some kind of force to be reckoned with.

-Vanilla Ice is blamed for the disappearance of a child.

-Vanilla Ice sabotages an open-mic night and throws a musician he thinks is shitty off the mic and bursts into a rapping routine.

-Vanilla Ice crashes his bike through a wall in the climax like the Kool-Aid Man.

-He wears a jacket that reads DOWN BY LAW on the back and a bunch of other "cool" nonsense.

-It's actually kind of an action movie!

Red Dawn got held up with MGM's financial woes, but it's finally seeing a release in November. No idea if it'll be good in the end, but The Cabin in the Woods proved the delay was worth something for these movies.

A shame Jeffrey Dean Morgan hasn't gotten as good of work. He is the Comedian.

I usually don't care for The Projection Booth (that's just personal preference, that's all) but I'll download it anyhow, which I am currently doing. It took a few minutes of trying in order for me to even have the option of downloading; finally it started working.

I'd like to listen as I know from his commentary on the First Blood DVD that Morrell is a real fun listen, and I imagine it'll be nice to hear what he has to say about his original novel and how it's so different from the movie.

Here's something to watch out for on TV: late tonight on TCM (3 AM ET to be exact) is the rare The Valachi Papers, a 1972 movie about the first Mob informant, which happens to star a certain Charles Bronson.

Almost forgot: just got home from the midnight of Men In Black 3D.  I was reasonably entertained.

SPOILERS AHEAD.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

First the important issues.  No, it's not as good as the first film and yes, it's far more fun and much smarter than the second. The series characters we were probably most tired of have been left out.  Though there is one we miss in a big way.  The Warhol scene from the trailer plays better than you might expect and the "Who is Flaco?" bit from the trailer has been cut completely, which I was thankful for.  I don't watch a whole lot of television but many of the new additions are supposedly TV favorites.  My particular favorite was the villain, who's far more interesting than Serleena (Lara Flynn Boyle) and almost as much fun as Edgar (Vincent D'Onofrio).  As far as the film's tone and scope go, I enjoyed that we finally got out of NYC (and off Earth) for a little while and looked into the national reach of the MIB.  And the action climax, while ultimately silly, worked for me.  (I even found the 3D kind of fun.)  It basically boils down to this: You're either sick and tired of the sci-fi nonsense of these movies... or you're into just sitting back, not sweating the fact that in Sonnenfeld's world not everything has to make total sense and having fun with the ride.  The Addams Family movies are just as full of goofball ridiculousness, and I liked them too.   There's no denying the cut and paste feeling of some of the narrative but then again I also felt some character development and some heart.  So, yeah, there are better things the $215 million budget probably could've gone toward.  But the long story short is, I wasn't let down by Men In Black 3D.  And anytime these days that Hollywood makes a mass-audience film that doesn't insult or piss me off somehow... Well, that's something I'm happy to experience.  Then again, maybe I'm gettin' old and just need to enjoy a piece of pie.

My take on this GI Joe 2 move is that, after Battleship sunk (and deservedly so), they're just a bit scared that audiences don't want military adventure stories right now... So they're trying to find a relatively safe climate to release the movie in so it will be more profitable, throwing in 3D as a bonus. March 2013 would put it in the clear. I don't think there will be too much box office competition. The movie might very well be terrible. But it will most likely be profitable at that date.

I think The Avengers surprised a lot of people. It seems no one expected it to be quite the game changing phenomenon its become. It's no coincidence that, as The Dark Knight Rises ups the ante in the marketing, they seem to be focusing as much as they can on the film's spectacle element. And don't be surprised if The Amazing Spider-Man now finds ways to have soft connections to the Marvel Movieverse. Also... All that talk about Man Of Steel being "a stand alone vision" is going to disappear. I think we can look forward to a World's Finest movie being announced by the end of the year.

Warners/DC just seems to have no clue.  Which is a shame, because theoretically I'd love to see a Justice League movie.  Admitting I'm a casual comics reader at best (or was when I was younger), I do prefer the Marvel stuff, but would make concessions for the wacky almost all alien shenanigans of DC.

I will agree that a Batman/Supes movie would all but seem an inevitability at this point.  Just hope they learn the most important lesson from THE AVENGERS- lighten the fuck up.  Geez, no reason why Green Lantern, which by its very name screams colorful, needed to be so dour.  Hopefully Zach Snyder's MAN OF STEEL isn't needlessly oh so dark.  Don't have high hopes for that one, anyway, because they're trotting out the origin shit again.

All these films are suffering from Nolanitis. Thankfully it seems that The Avengers was just the shot of penicillin that the superhero film needed.

Either that or Joss Whedon needs to write all comic films to balance out seriousness and wacky humor. Favereau also balanced it or well in the first Iron Man.

As Devin pointed out in his piece on The Avengers conquering irony and cynicism, I think America is just tired of the gloomy shit.  It's been a staple of popculture since the 90's.  Twenty years is long enough.

If The Dark Knight Rises underperforms, it will be because people are "tired." Because I really doubt it will be a bad movie.

And if, in turn, we hear about "last minute reshoots" for Man Of Steel, it will be because it was going to be a dark and gritty movie.

Personally, I'm really looking forward to it and I don't mind the origin story aspect. It's been 34 years since Donner's Superman. That handled the origin story on film very well. But the world is ready for a fresh approach to the character at this point. It's a whole new generation. It's not like doing another Spider-Man origin story 10 years after Raimi already did it so well.
