Personally, the only properties that I believe should be dark and gloomy are Batman and The Punisher. Off hand of course. I mean, Swamp Thing was written as a dead serious sci-fi/horror comic, and both films ended up being campy.

Not everything needs to be dark and *ugh* realistic.

Erix, It would not be surprising to hear that you are likely...100% correct.  The difference between Battleship and G.I. Joe couldn't be Larger than it is.  Battleship features our battlefleet against EEEEvil Aliens.  G.I. Joe is the...Best Of The Best Military with the latest high tech weaponry, Ninja that is closer to it's  Marvel Origins then a film like Battleship ever could be.  I can wait til release date as there are numerous other films to keep me busy til next year, when I...MARCH, to see G.I. Joe vs Cobraaaa, with box office totals, and future sequels at stake.

Speaking of DeVito, a great song from an 80's movie that, sadly, doesn't have a video with its stars:

Being somewhat of a Michael Winslow completist, what I watched last night was the teen battle of the bands comedy LOVELINES.

A summary:

"Greed, lust, dirty tricks and bloody fist fights... All those things that make life worth living. When Piper and Rick, the two hottest properties in the Battle of the Bands want to make it, only one thing stands in their way. They're from opposing High Schools. And Malibu High's 6'6" muscle-bound monster Godzilla is going to do everything and anything stop his sweet little sister getting it on with some jerk from the Coldwater Canyon High. When all else fails, only Lovelines answering service can keep them together."

Highlight: Miguel Ferrer shows up as a punk drummer named Dragon. And of course Winslow does his goofy sound effects. And there's a bit of gratuitous nudity when the girls of one HS tamper with the swimsuits of the opposing school's swim team, causing them to fall apart and off.

Verdict: a cheesy movie that manages to steal from the better teen flicks of the decade, yet still has a goofy charm

STAR WARS turns 35 today. Damn. THE movie that made me a geek. As my man Dre said on Twitter, it really shouldn't have gotten that plastic surgery when it was 20.

My God... I think I have completely forgotten about that film since it came out almost 20 years ago. I sure as shit haven't seen it but I do remember advertisements for it.

Well then... all those Sexiest or Hottest of the Year lists are nothing but poppycock, where the winner most likely gets selected either because they have a big movie coming out soon or they're predicted to become a bigger star sometime in the near future. It is nothing to get worked up about.

Would you believe that I've never seen any of those films? It's true. I just have never been interested; the most familiarity I have with the franchise is the theme park attraction at Universal Studios Orlando, which is a fun ride.

Nicely said. I enjoyed The Dark Knight (at least at the time; I haven't revisited it since '08) but otherwise I'd rather not see his films, and I don't know about his big film coming out in July. The advertisements have actually been a turn-off.

There's another film I haven't seen but I do remember. For some reason I am reminded of another obscure early 90's film, Folks! I unfortunately did see it and it wasn't all that good and in fact was an unpleasant comedy. It stars a mustache-less Tom Selleck and Don Ameche and I wouldn't recommend tracking it down.

I feel like I take STONE COLD for granted at times. I mean that's a movie where a priest is shotgunned through a stained glass window... DURING A BAPTISM! That's an actual moment in the film. What a triumph.

Anyway, guess we have a great excuse to enjoy The Doobie Brothers' music video for Dangerous, from the STONE COLD soundtrack:

Glad to see the Stone Cold love on here.  It's one of my favorite movies of the 90's.  Absolute best line of the film - " Times like these remind me of the last words my father said to me.  No son don't, that gun is loaded!"  Quality flick.  Too bad the Boz never did much after that.  I was always hoping there would someday be a Stone Cold 2.

I don't know, Adkins seems like he has a lot of potential as a leading man.  Having watched El Gringo the other day, I think he definitely has it in him to be charming, funny, or serious depending on what's demanded of him.  He has a sense of fun about him in that one I hadn't gotten out of any of the other movies he's done, and that shows me he could do right with a good project.  Obviously he's a very skilled martial artist, but so is Chuck Norris and that man's best movies arguably aren't such a great showcase for such skills.

I agree with you Kain.  I think Adkins has a ton of potential as a leading man.  I liked him in Ninja and am looking forward to seeing what he can do in El Gringo and UniSol 4.  He's also starting to get some mainstream attention with his casting in the Bigelow directed Osama drama Zero Dark Thirty, and I think he'll shine in whatever screen time he gets in Expendables 2.  I think he's got a pretty decent career ahead of him.

Truth be told, I am not a big fan of THE DARK KNIGHT and BATMAN BEGINS. They are good films. But would i want to watch them over and over again? Not really. Bale's Batman voice just sound weird and his Batsuit is even worse.

Looks like i am the only one here who's looking forward to THE AMAZING SPIDER MAN.

Back to Action films. See anything you like?

Judge Dredd Creator John Wagner is one of the ELITE FEW who have actually seen footage from DREDD. He liked what he saw.

Quote:

I went up to London yesterday to see the completed Dredd film. I've had reservations about certain aspects of it, and made them plain to the team at DNA. All but one of them - a little quibble at the beginning - have been addressed. And what a lot they've added. Music is on the button. SFX are excellent. Filming is impressive. I've not seen a modern 3-D movie before but I like it. I found myself reaching out trying to touch things that were dancing before my eyes. Karl is a great Dredd and Olivia gets Anderson completely. This is Dredd as it should be done - true to character, visceral, unrelentingly violent (but not off-puttingly so). It will open, I believe, sometime in September. No doubt you'll let me know what you think when you've seen it, but this has my recommendation.

"Unrelentingly violent" works for me.

I could go for a dark as hell Daredevil adaptation that's not directed by the dude who inflicted Simon Birch upon us. And is it just me or would Michael C. Hall make a badass Matt Murdock?

I'm also loving that Andrew W.K.-infused Expendables 2 fan trailer. Between that and revisiting Con Air this week, I'm more geeked up to see it than I already was.

About to revisit John Dahl's JOYRIDE for the first time since seeing it in the theatre. Didn't like it at the time, but hoping for a THE HITCHER-like reappraisal.

Trivia: thread legends Sylvester Stallone and Eric Roberts, as well as Eric Stoltz, all auditioned for the part of mysterious unseen antagonist "Rusty Nail".

Also somewhat of note, the movie was written by J.J. Abrams.

LOVE Joyride. That film goes all the way back for me when I saw it announced as Squelch, and I've always loved crazy killer truck/trucker movies. Saw it in the theater, and dug it, and immediately got the dvd around Christmas of 2002. The really alternate ending (there were several of them) that was 29 MINUTES, and basically changed the entire last half of the film is worth a look on the dvd.

Watching the campy Invasion Of The Bee Girls right now. Pretty fun movie, and the immortal William Smith is in the lead role. If I'm not half asleep later, I'll either be Gone Fishin', or performing GYMKATA.

I don't know what my problem was back in the day, but I really dug the movie this time out. It's well directed by Dahl, and even if the last act is a bit of a mess, it still works. Don't think anyone can top Ted Levine as Rusty Nail, but can you imagine Sly? It would've been so weird.  In a before they were famous moment, I got a kick out of seeing Jim Beaver as the sheriff. I'm not a fan of Paul Walker, but he's likable here, and has real chemistry with Steve Zhan, especially when they're prank c.b.ing.

So, who's a fan of Black Moon Rising? I thought it was fucking awesome and rated R...for rad!

Tommy Lee Jones, Linda Hamilton, Robert Vaughn and Lee Ving from Fear as the bad guys, a super-car that can go over 300 miles an hour, co-written by John Carpenter? Yes, please! Surprisingly well made by the crazily named Harley Cokeliss, this is a fun, character-driven B-movie that teeters on the edge of being a glorified pilot episode for a Knight Rider ripoff. However, thanks to the charm and strengths of its leads, it manages to transcend coming off as the genius of an over-caffeinated 12-year-old and let the characters be more important than the flashy MacGuffin (which kicks serious ass despite looking like a stupid space DeLorean).

Judging by the premise, you'd expect a prototype for something Jerry Bruckheimer would have dry-humped to make a decade later, but it's smarter and edgier than the premise should allow. Lalo Schifrin provides a great score with heavy overtones of Carpenter-esque synth beats, and this exchange occurs between Hamilton and a pervy businessman at a bar, who probably pays a needless amount of money for video dating:

Guy: "What would you think if I said I wanted to take you home and fuck your brains out?"

Hamilton: "You're in for a long, lonely night."

Later on, Tommy Lee Jones fucks Linda Hamilton, and in a move straight from the Joe Eszterhas playbook, Robert Vaughn videotaped it.

Meanwhile, I'd fuck this movie, especially if it was 80's Linda Hamilton. Put that on the Blu-ray when it comes out.

I watched some of that the other night on Encore. Damn Dina Meyer was (is) hot!

Tonight I watched The Three Musketeers (2011 flavor) and was mildly entertained. It's goofy and ridiculously over-the-top but ultimately harmless. Worth the redbox rental.

That's two nights in a row I've encountered a fan of Three Musketeers.  I couldn't finish it.  And I had no idea who the director was, or anything, going in.

Love JOYRIDE.  It's one of those I will always give a little attention to when it pops up on cable.  I think the underrated Dahl is the one that derailed him, UNFORGETTABLE.  Love the concept, love the low key approach.

Being a cyberpunk nerd, I have the tendency to revisity MNEMONIC every couple of years.  Still not good.  Dammit, probably the closest we'll ever see to Gibson's Neuromancer vision on the big screen.

Sadly, MNEMONIC-CON INDY was cancelled here due to death threats leveled against Robert Longo.  Poor sport.

Keith, I can't stand MUSKETEERS either.

Let's not forget the reason it has taken so long for the Red Dawn remake to reach theaters: MGM going bankrupt.  The exact same cause of extensive production delays for The Hobbit duology and SkyfallCabin In The Woods sat on the shelf for just as long and most loved the ever-living shit out of it.  I'm not expecting Red Dawn to be a masterpiece, but let's not pretend it has been gathering dust because the studio had no faith in it.

Also, expect them to pimp the hell out of Chris Hemsworth's presence after how Avengers has raped the box office........especially if his Snow White flick makes a good amount of cash as well.

I don't think there will be too much box office competition. The movie might very well be terrible. But it will most likely be profitable at that date.

Eh, not so sure.  It's not so much specific competition it will be seeing if it sticks with that March release, but the amount of it:

- Neil Blomkemp's Elysium

- Raimi's Oz: The Great & Powerful

- Ender's Game

- The also-banished Jack The Giant Killer

- Paul Greengrass' Captain Phillips

- An adaptation of Stephanie Meyer's The Host

- Percy Jackson 2

Nothing "OMG it'll stop GI Joe!", but an amount sizable enough to siphon a decent amount of profit from it.  This is a BAD move on Paramount's part.  I suspect that if the reshoots (and we know there will be some) make the studio happy, they might push it back again to a Summer 2013 release.  If not?  It will stay and rot in March.

That was one of the reasons for pushing it back, to capitalise on his star rising from being Thor.  Only he has reprised the role once already and the film is still half-a-year away.  I get the feeling it will fizzle when it does arrive.

I don't know if any of you are fans of The Projection Booth podcast, but they posted a mammoth 3 Hour 50 minute episode about First Blood!!!  It features interviews with Ted Kotcheff and David Morrell and it also discusses other First Blood related films (including Son of Rambow).  I haven't listened to it yet, but how can it not be a great listen?

http://projection-booth.blogspot.com/2012/05/episode-64-flooding-with-love-for-first.html

I'm only a third or a way through this (thus-far) awesome First Blood retrospective. First Blood is my unapologetic choice for favorite Sly film, and this is really a joy to hear. David Morrell mentions an old Rambo skit on Johnny Carson in the mid-80's, and I just had to find it. It has to have been posted on here at some point, but it's the first time I've heard of it. And DAMN, it's pretty awesome. That suit he is wearing is Hellboy worthy, and he even racks a shotgun at the audience (I also noted grenades in the belt Cobra-style). Better than the UHF skit and on par with a lot of Hot Shots! Part Deux, it gives me a happy.

At times Carson's Sly impression is more like Charles Bronson, but for some reason I don't care.

On a side note, the craziest difference between the First Blood novel and movie to me isn't the body count or the ending, but that in the novel Rambo is buck-ass-nude as he escapes the police station and steals the motorcycle. He runs throw the forest with not even a burlap sack to keep him company for a lengthy section of the book. I'm pretty sure it would have given the movie a different feel to have "The Stallion" hanging out during chase scenes.

felix, Apparently Johnny Rico is a General, Carmen Ibanez is a Starship Captain, and Carl has been moved to a very high position.  It is a sequel only to...Verhoeven's Starship Troopers, and it ignores all else.  The director also directed CGI Appleseed 1 and 2

I have read First Blood, and besides the ending (obviously), the fact that Rambo spends much of the action nude is the most startling difference.

Honestly, I think Carson's Stallone falls more along the lines of De Niro and modern Mickey Rourke, but he does an excellent job of capturing the character. Love how grotesque the body suit is. The bit with the mailman at the end was great.

"Mr. Rambo hates anything RED."

You are spot on with the contemporary Mickey Rourke, he even does that weird barrel chested wobble ole' RamJam sometimes does.

It's funny that one of my favorite parts about The Avengers (and I have watched it twice because I liked it so damn much), is that Hawkeye's bow felt like a suped-up version of the Rambo: First Blood Part II weapon. That and Powers Boothe playing a shadowy government figure.

That Mr. Rambo's Neighborhood video was hilariously grotesque. Due to the bad video quality, Carson ends up resembling Rourke as well due to the voice.

Well, that's a big listing of films. What caught my eye was the property known as REVENGE FOR JOLLY! Besides the title, the cast includes Elijah Wood, Ryan Philippe, and (bleh) Kristen Wiig, and the poster has a little dog wearing a sombrero! I was immediately befuddled and I looked online, and, yes, the movie is about a guy getting revenge for his dog getting murdered. This inspired much laughter from me, and I am a dog lover.

I haven't seen that film before; I just know it exists. The director also did the quite amusing Malone, starring good old Burt Reynolds, where it's implied he boinks an at most 17 year old Cynthia Gibb. He also did a 1982 movie known as Warlords of the 21st Century, a.k.a. BATTLETRUCK.

This looks like something that Fleed watched as a kid. It stars Michael Beck and-hilariously-John Ratzenberger.

Last night I went out and about to the usual nightclub in Orlando and overall had a pretty good time. I especially enjoyed seeing women shaking their asses & titties right in front of me; that's always a good time! Also nice was seeing what I called The Magnificent Seven walk in; one of them was celebrating a birthday and all of the seven women at least looked good and some looked pretty damn hot, and all of them made me go from 6 to 12. Tonight I'll be at Buffalo Wild Wings to watch the latest UFC pay per view and I'll report late tonight on if anything interesting happens there.

I own Battletruck thanks to a double feature that Shout Factory put out some time ago. It's not too bad. I dug it. It also has James Wainright, "Mingo" from Joe Kidd as the commander of the titular vehicle.

Looking forward to hearing about your nightly adventure, Perfect. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to hearing about your weekend adventures. Just like all the other gents here probably do. More lovely girls with nice boobies at night clubs awash with booze and (probably) shitty techno.

With all the club sandwiches and cold Mexican beer they're going to have, you won't need room service.

I'll be sitting at the bar and ordering some ICE-T.

I'm sure somebody smarter in here has pointed this out ages ago, but upon finally checking the synopsis for THE TOMB, how many movies is it now where Sly is incarcerated?

*Victory- POW

*First Blood- might not count, but he is technically locked up (ha) for a moment

*Rambo, FBII- Starts off in prison

*Lock Up- Don't need to explain this one

*Tango & Cash- FUBAR

*Demolition Man- Yep

*Judge Dredd- Has to inexplicably escape with Rob Schneider

*The Tomb

I almost want to count EYE SEE YOU, but that would be thin.  Am I forgetting anything?

I believe Natali was a storyboard artist on JOHNNY MNEMONIC earlier in his career.

CYPHER and SPLICE were disappointing but the CUBE wonder-director always has interesting projects and scripts on his plate...

Does Kotcheff talks about the editing and final cut? Sly always said he wanted to burn the negative when he saw the 3 hour cut and re-edited it to 90 mins and made a lot of changes to make it the film that we know... Not sure how much they got along and how much of its success is due to TK (nice man though)...

I've always liked CUBE. Thought CUBE 2: HYPERCUBE was okay. The third one was just terrible.

Is Eye Of The Beholder any good?

With that name, a shame Harley Cokeliss never made a Simpson/Bruckheimer movie.

I heard Ashley Judd plays with herself in Eye Of The Beholder. So I guess if you want to see that, felix then check it out.

Watching U.S. Marshals right now. Been a while since I've seen it, but it's still a fun time and Tommy Lee Jones never disappoints. Neither does Robert Downey Jr.

AMAZON WOMEN ON THE MOON: still hilarious.

I've heard Eye of the Beholder is some incredibly absurd shit. Check it out, if only for a laugh.

Too bad about Ashley Judd. Missing was shit and her face all scrunched up when she was crying was...the thing of total boner annihilation.

The Perfect Weapon, I do not know how I...Didn't see Battletruck.  Maybe it was...R Rated.  I did see...Damnation Alley.  Damnation Alley was also Post WW3, featuring a high tech Battletruck.  Blue Thunder was my...First R Rated film, and I didn't see that til 1983.  I did enjoy Michael Beck's other Cinematic Masterpiece from 1982...MEGAFORCE!  I also watched Beck star as...The Last Ninja, which of course is...Awesome!
