While I miss Texas, I have the feeling that me being away from Hastings stores and other used DVD/Bluray places has deeply reduced the amount of dvd hoarding I do. When I was finally getting around to organizing my DVDs, I had a TON of those "Fuck it" purchases. I like having it on hand, but you'd be surprised how little you need to pull out, say, the director's cut of Windtalkers.

...that said, I'm probably going to buy that Red Scorpion blu/dvd that you linked to a while ago.

Watching STONE COLD. Would the Boz get a Eastwood in FISTFULL like intro? More like Sly in COBRA (complete with supermarket shoot out). Has eating a cookie ever been so badass? And "You got a clean up on aisle four" lol, yes! Cue guitars!

These bikers rule, they're drinking DIXIE beer!

"My, my, my, what do we got here? Looks like we got us a grown up version of Bam Bam. You sure are pretty Bam Bam. You're a real pretty boy. You got a real pretty face. How would you like me to fuck it up for you?" The great William Forsythe, ladies and gents, delivering the QT-esque diologue with panache.

My girlfriend sent me a text about it tonight with a picture and made fun of its PG-ratedness.  Pretty funny!

A minor complaint: would Henricksen really use the phrase 'knuckle sandwitches' and would Forsythe call himself a 'worry wart"?

Henriksen was made for this movie, though. He oozes biker sleaze.

Goes without saying, the Boz's mullet is epic, and the real star of the movie.

William Forsythe's death is amazing. "Let's dance" indeed.

And now a couple of words about my recent (yet non-B movie action) film viewings...

BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS (1980).  I was shocked to have found it as much fun as I did.  Though I found the lead, Richard Thomas, a bit weak here and there, he was more than well-supported by Darlanne Fluegel, Sybil Danning, Robert Vaughan, George Peppard and filmmakers Jimmy Murakami, Roger Corman and legend John Sayles.  Low budget and tons of fun.

STAR CRASH (1978).  The other end of the fun scale.  Caroline Munro might be gorgeous and all but she never had a chance in this dreadfully boring Star Wars rip-off that's only really interesting in an MST3K goof-while-you-watch kind of way.  Christopher Plummer seems perpetually high and David Hasselhoff actually fares the best of anyone.  Except for maybe the Robot with a Texas Accent.

NEIGHBORS (1981).  Loved it as a kid and while it doesn't totally hold up there's a lot to like.  Belushi and Aykroyd are comedy gold, Cathy Moriarty is sexy goodness and Tim Kazurinsky steals every scene he's in.  Lots of unusual choices, strange moments and a weird ending I still haven't quite deciphered.  Still gets a few uncomfortable laughs, though.

MOONRISE KINGDOM (2012).  Wes Anderson couldn't make a bad movie if he tried.  Maybe not as great as Rushmore, Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic or Fantastic Mr. Fox but pretty darn close.  If you don't like his earlier works, you won't like this one.  If you did, you'll find some bliss here.

Thanks, Perfect. We had a laugh going over there and answering questions such as "Is this person that you're marrying blood related?" or "Have you been married in the last 30 days?" Never thought I'd be asked questions like that. Of course we both said no.

Safe was a good time at the movies. Didn't really expect the film to end the way it did, but it was an interesting way to end the film, rather than the general way it would have been in every other martial arts influenced movie. It was great seeing James Hong and Chris Sarandon back on the big screen. James Hong looks about 25 years younger than he is, and Chris Sarandon has kept himself in great shape. Statham was great, and even though the film started off really slow, when it picked up, IT PICKED UP.

Finished up revisiting Miller's Crossing. Complicated plot, but I still dig the film more than I did the first time I saw it.

I'm glad you liked Stone Cold. It really is awesome.

Have you seen Gary Busey's Eye of the Tiger? It doesn't feature the usual "leather and chains" type bikers, but it's a pretty fun action flick, 80s style.

By the way, during the NBA game tonite I saw the trailer for Oliver Stone's crime thriller SAVAGES. Benicio del Toro as a Mexican crime lord. And Travolta in the mix. It could be a mess, but I'm intrigued.

I'm intrigued by Savages.  Heard the book is killer.  Oliver Stone scares me a bit, too, though.

STONE COLD never gets old.  It's just so fucking fun.

Watched NIGHTMARE CITY last night.  Kind of loved it.  Not what I was expecting.  Really beautifully shot.  Wacky, sure, but in a good 'fuck it' sort of way.  Had to follow that up with my old school Criterion of ROBOCOP, because, well, why not?  Robocop never gets old.

Oh, by the way:

Have fond memories of this. Robert Vaughan basically playing the same character he did in The Magnificant Seven.

Skip Snow White And The Huntsman, people. With the exception of some great Charlize Theron overacting, this is mostly forgettable shit.

I keep forgetting to post about this in the thread.  It does really look good, but I too am a bit afraid of what Oliver Stone is going to put on screen.  Its practically unpredictable at this point.

Blake Lively will always get me "intrigued" though.

Blake Lively does nothing for me. I just don't understand how Gossip Girl has lasted 5 Seasons. Is anyone here actually watching that?

I saw an adaption of Don Winslow once. The Life And Death Of Bobby Z. Staring Paul Walker, Olivia Wilde and Laurence Fishburn.

Liked it. Tracked down the book and read it. So i'll definitely be catching SAVAGES as well.

Well... About DVD hoarding, it's gotten really easy to do that here because it's so cheap. I end up buying like 5 Blu Rays a week. Because each one costs the equivalent of $2.50. So it beats rental fees. I do occasionally pull a Rene and end up getting potentially embarrassing things like Morning Glory (which was actually pretty good, OKAY???) or How Do You Know.

Don't forget Beethoven 5, PW. We have to screen that as well.

In all seriousness, I'm sure a B Action Bachelor Party with us would be great. We should do something on these pages, as the day approaches. Give him a virtual party. To say nothing of the big day itself.

The most important thing to take from the ending is that he's free. The whole movie is about how Aykroyd and Moriarty are like angels sent to rescue Belushi from his mundane suburban existence.

I love Neighbors. It's a quirky film that a lot of people hate. But it just connects with me. The dirty coffee cup scene is classic.

Also known as: THE OVERUSED GARY BUSEY COMEUPPANCE.

Probably my least favorite action movie cliché. Henriksen deserves a more spectacular death.

Nightmare City/City Of The Walking Dead is friggin' awesome. Love (and have) the score, and own the first DVD release. First time I saw it on VHS back in 2000, my friend rented it, and the VHS cover actually took a still from Robocop 3! Hugo Stiglitz is a cool lead, and you've got to love stuff like the cameramen in the studio wearing LABCOATS, Hugo Stiglitz throwing a small tv that has a huge explosion and as soon as it hits a zombie, it immediately explodes, and of course the surgeon who tosses his scalpel like a throwing knife.

I'm definitely up for a virtual bachelor party. Sounds awesome!

All this talk about DVD/Blu-Ray hoarding and Rene's regular updates about the shopping scene in Santa Rosa has me really waxing nostalgic about that era in my life.  6-7 years ago i was a serious DVD hoarder, but I think it was a function of the times...also I was living off my parents' dime still.  Now that I am using my own scratch, and I think more importantly the advent of NETFLIX instant and On-Demand services through your cable/satellite provider I rarely buy discs anymore.  I rarely went and pulled out my old DVDs after viewing them once through with all the special features.

Nowadays I just buy the things on Blu-Ray that I know I am going to rewatch or I know I am going to want to loan out e.g. my full series copy of THE WIRE has been loaned out a countless number of times.  I am still slowly making my way though my full series blu-ray copy of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.

I find that I am definitely overloading with media content nowadays.  My DVR is constantly capping out with films I DVR off the 25 different movie channels I get with the NFL package on DirecTV, I am trying to make my way though BREAKING BAD on NETFLIX, and also trying to squeeze in season 2 of BATTLESTAR.  Add in summer movies, work, and all your guys' crazy recommendations (SINNERS AND SAINTS is next on my list as rec'd by you guys) its really hard to keep up.  Good think I don't have any kids or wive(s) (hey we are living in a post-Romney world ok!) to take care of!

Hey Guys, I have...2 questions.  Who has...BBC America?  Is anyone interested in...COPPER, as in an Irish Cop, in 1864 in the same...5 points area of NYC, that Bill The Butcher roamed in Scorcese's Gangs Of New York!  Unlike the film, this is focused on a cop, who is...One Tough COPPER!  Brass Knuckles seem to be a part of his arsenal as well.  The trailer was just shown on the site www.bbcamerica.com/copper

WOW!  I do...COP to it looking...Awesome!  August 19th is the opening night of the show.  One of the actresses involved is Franke Potente, whom was once...BOURNE, with an...IDENTITY!

The grabbing of the cop's gun was an LW swipe, but the fade in showing the great Sam McMurray as the trigger man is a delightful homage to the Al Powell reveal after Karl is gunned down at the end of DIE HARD.

The book is a page turner, no doubt, though I tend to side on the fence that feels it's a tad over-worshipped. It's full of pop-culture references that are way too cutesy-poo. Plus the drug cartel is presented as this all-powerful entity, yet as the story goes on they turn out to be the dumbest criminal enterprise in the history of literature. I'm praying the movie will drop some of the huge gaps in logic that made the cartel look so inept.

Stone worries me because W and WALL STREET 2 just had zero punch. I'm wondering if he's going to overcompensate with SAVAGES and he'll end up morphing into early 90's Tony Scott x 10 which might be good but could also be very very bad.

That being said I'm confident that Del Torro is gonna rule as Lado.

I hadn't heard of that show until now. Thanks for the heads up. I'll be checking it out in August. Finally something to watch on BBCA, which, with the exception of Top Gear, shows mostly shit anymore.

Mister Falcon, They only aired the trailer on their website recently.  As of last weekend, the site was not updated.  I saw it today.  I think Copper will be far more interesting than most cop shows.  To me, the last interesting cop series was...Wanted, and TNT cancelled it, and kept...The Closer...UGH!  The 5 points era of NYC, should provide ample drama and plenty of action.

Speaking of cop shows, finished up a flick called FEW OPTIONS. Wouldn't have noticed it in the listings if not for the fact that it starred Kenny (Lem) Johnson and David (Billings!) Marciano of The Shield. The story centers on Johnson as a guy who has spent over 20 years in prison who, due to California's financial woes, is given an early release. Once back out he's able to sleep in the garage of his cousin (played by Rainn Wilson who I assume must be good friends with the director or Johnson to do this film) and takes a job as a security guard at a strip club. As these stories tend to go Johnson's efforts to go straight are tested, mainly by the strip club's scumbag owner played by the always reliable Brad Dourif who wants Johnson to pull off a hit.

By no means is FEW OPTIONS groundbreaking or an edge of your seat affair. It's a low-budget indie crime drama that tackles a lot of the same stuff you've seen in movies a million times before. But I dug it thanks mainly to Kenny Johnson who is in pretty much every scene. He anchors the film quite nicely and it was cool to see him carry a picture like this. Would be great it he could start getting the sort of breaks that Walt Goggins has had the last few years, even though they're fairly different types of actors.

Got an early start today and we went to have lunch at Red Lobster. Hit up Big Lots and blind bought the Rollerball remake for 3 bucks. I've heard it's shit, and the original is pretty great, but I wanted to check it out anyway. Headed to Best buy and picked up The Ring on Blu-ray, and The Sopranos: The Complete Series for 60 bucks. It's a friggin' steal at that price, as the regular price is 219 dollars. I've been wanting to get the series for a while, and rented all the seasons back when they came out. Looking forward to revisiting the series, as it was equal parts thrilling and hilarious. Great start to the summer.

Got in the mail A Bullet For The General, Mortuary (with Christopher George, Lynda Day George, and Bill Paxton!) as well as Dead Poets Society, and The Wraith. Glad that I'm finally going to be able to finish Mortuary. Rented the vhs several years ago, and it messed up towards the end. Really glad it finally streeted on disc.

For some reason I was never interested in it. I mean, the trailers did nothing for me. The fact that Pouty McNoEmote (a phrase I stole from elsewhere) is in the lead doesn't really help matters. But of course, my Twilight fan mom plans on seeing it soon and I am sure she'll love it.

I've seen PROMETHEUS and three Amanda Seyfried movies.

Already wrote a bit about Prometheus in the thread. It's pretty great looking and too interesting a movie not to see it in theaters, but it's not an ALIEN or ALIENS. Maybe an ALIEN 3, so lower your expectations. But you all owe to see this to support adult oriented, dark science-fiction movies with gross alien tentacles. We need this, not another Rihanna Battleship.

Now for the Seyfried-a-thon. I love that girl, so I watched three movies I hadn't seen of her:

I started with GONE which is a rather bad serial killer thriller. It stars Michael Pare, Wes Bentley, Dexter's sister and Joel Moore, who are all rightfully perplexed by Seyfried's character who is overly hysterical. She screams at everyone, aims guns at them, drives like a maniac and even avoids cops trying to help her. Worst moment has her character bluntly agreeing to meet an unknown caller somewhere deep in the woods at night, who of course turns out not to be friendly. Seyfried herself is pretty good, it's just not a very well written role, or movie.

DEAR JOHN has Seyfried falling in love with Duke from GI JOE. But because of his GI JOE duties he's unable to spend much time with her, so she sticks around with a coin loving Richard Jenkins and writing letter into war zones instead. The opening romance is kinda sweet, but due to their distance it quickly goes bland, there are no interesting Duke at work scenes and a rising conflict doesn't feel believable or organic. She does get to sing, but there's not much to shine. Letters from Julia buries this.

Going out with a bang, I finished with MAMMA MIA!: THE MOVIE. Really not a fan of musical's or ABBA, but I gotta admit it's pretty livid, Seyfried and Streep are really fun, Seyfried can hold a tune and while Seyfried will also be heard singing in LES MISERABLES, this one has her sing wearing a bath suit. The three men are fun too. First, you got Stellan Skarsgard who's so out of type, it's unbelievable. His Martin Vanger can't really sing, but knows it and gleefully doesn't give a fuck. Colin Firth is the best singer of them, but he's just cute. Brosnan? Wants to fit in, but it seems he has more eyes for his movie daughter than for Meryl Streep. It's the best of the three Seyfrieds, even if it's a true manhood test to watch.

I suppose you'll be catching RED RIDING HOOD as well, Chris?

Watching STREET KINGS right now. Forrest Whitaker is overacting like a motherfucker in this one. Also we've got Dr House as a Police Captain.

"I TRIED TO SAVE YOU, TOM! I TRIED TO SAVE YOU!"

Is STREET KINGS 2: MOTOR CITY any good?

Street Kings 2: Motor City has some cool camera angles, and Liotta dressed up as a Smokey The Bear type at the beginning. It's ok and worth a rental.

Speaking of rentals, since Piranha 3DD is only in limited release, and Video On Demand, I rented it via Amazon's video service. Vanessa and I are watching it right now. Pretty fun so far, and quite sleazy. Thus far it's pretty decent, and I'm not regretting plunking the $7 for the rental.

I had that recommended to me back when Netflix had buddies. Still need to check it out.

I revisited HUSTLE & FLOW. Damn, still a great flick. A mesmerizing performance by Terence Howard. The greatest Hip & Hop movie of all time, after KRUSH GROOVE.

After the playoffs tonite, THE ROAD WARRIOR.

Watched the Korean film The Front Line last night, and while it was overly melodramatic in parts (most asian war movies are), it still was pretty good and had some decent action moments. Also plenty of humor to keep you going. Then I watched Wolf Creek again, still awesome and brutal. Hadn't seen it in like 8 years.

You guys are awesome. I'm trying to get out and do more stuff, but when I come home I still gotta catch up with all your posts.

I'm excited about this Scream Factory stuff for sure, and nice write up Rene. Please let me know what you think of Miller's Crossing? But be gentle as it's my favorite movie.

Well gonna go play some hoops, and watch some more movies at a friend's house. Keep on truckin B Action Movie Thread.

R!!!!!

p.s. Rene I would totally take a road trip down there to an after wedding party for you and your lady at an Alamo Drafthouse! Or even a backyard grilling session.

Already seen Red Riding Hood. It's really beautifully shot and Gary Oldman has a good time, but overall it's not enough. The werewolf mystery doesn't pay off and there's a lame love triangle. In Time is okayish, but not doing enough with its interesting premise. Chloe is probably her best movie. Just coincidence that's the one she's nude in. On VERONICA MARS she died in the pilot episode, but was so alluring they let her come back in flashbacks for ten more episodes. And she totally took away Jennifer's Body from Megan Fox.

Can anyone speak for Bill Paxton's series BIG LOVE?

Street Kings is very solid, never seen the sequel. If you haven't you gotta check out Forests run on THE SHIELD, absolutely great. And him playing Idi Amin. Don't read that he directed Hope Floats and First Daughter. He hasn't. He hasn't.

Oh man, Forest Whitaker went crazy on The Shield with the overacting. "HE'S PISSING ON US, AND IT TASTES LIKE......PISS!!!!"

I dig Miller's Crossing Milkyway. The plot is a little too contrived, and can get confusing, but the characters and dialogue keep me interested. The first time I saw it, I hated it, but it's grown on me.

Piranha 3DD was decent enough. Felt like a DTV sequel, since it seems the budget was a lot lower than the first, but overall I liked it. Ving shows up for a cameo, and the Hoff has the best line in the movie that had us laughing a lot. "You ginger little moron." We both agreed that the price was worth it.

Watching The Wraith right now. It's been 8 or 9 years since I've seen this movie. Of course I remember liking it, and Clint Howard's toupee is amazing.

I remember being struck with how nonchalant Charlie Sheen is in it. It's the most mellow The Crow style revenge flick.

Forest Whitaker was definitely "mega acting" in THE SHIELD when Mackey started sticking it to his character.  A really great turn in a legendary show.

Saw GOD BLESS AMERICA today...really well done.  Goldthwait has turned into a real director here!  Nothing outside of Joel Murray's opening monologue in the office felt too preachy.  I really enjoyed it.

Has anyone watched this?

I've to admit that the footage is a lot more dark and hardcore than i expected. It would've been interesting if the movies were more like this.

Yeah, Charlie Sheen definitely is actually underplaying the role. He doesn't get showy at all. It certainly borrows quite a bit from High Plains Drifter. "Character is killed, comes back looking like someone else to get revenge on the bad guys." Only difference is Clint wants to punish the town in High Plains Drifter, and Charlie Sheen just wants revenge on the gang.

Trying not to watch any of that stuff as I want to try the new game with a fresh mind.

So i watched Prachya Pinkaew's english language "debut" ELEPHANT WHITE...

what a mess.  I know Pinkaew is a huge fan of Besson, and basically aped every Besson directed or written film and threw it together in one film set in Thailand.

They must have given Kevin Bacon buckets of money to get him to do this movie.  His role as the "englishman" was alright, but pretty bleh.

The movie totally felt like one of Pinkaew's Thai movies...except you take out all the Muay Thai action.  For the first 45 minutes I was almost about to turn it off because nothing happened and then all of a sudden the classic Besson "damsel in distress" shows up and then Djimon Honsou finally started killing people.

Sniping scenes on film are very hard to make interesting and this movie has TWO OF THEM!

I will say the movie definitely piqued my interest when Honsou busted out a Stryker combat shotgun and just starting BLOWING THE FUCK out of Thai stunt men in a brothel.  Its been a long time since I have seen such satisfying squib and wire work to really accentuate the damage a shotgun can do in close range.  I really enjoyed that scene.

There was even one dream sequence where they put together some sort of Muay Thai/Gun-Fu type combination which kinda worked for me too.

Save for those two scenes though the movie was useless.

Also, Bangkok must be the sweatiest city in the world.  I dont think there was more than 5 screen minutes that went by until Honsou was completely drenched in sweat.  Gotta be murder on the dry cleaning!

Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn are two of my comedy heroes, and Jonah Hill is funny, so I'm really disappointed the upcoming THE WATCH looks like crap. It's directed by the guy who made HOT ROD, so that's another plus, but the clips I saw during the NBA playoffs (especially the alien stuff) were just really forced and obvious. Also, talk about a movie with bad timing, not the best time for neighborhood watch aspect.

Flipping channels during the game, I watched a little of KILL BILL (1 & 2) on iFC. The underrated performance in the movie belongs to Michael Madsen. His samurai in shitkicker exile has real pathos. And when he's about to bury the Bride alive he's coolly unflinchingly sinister. Even in RESERVOIR, Madsen has never been that good.
