I'll be honest, I don't know if I've ever seen anything from the cartoon and I know I haven't read anything from the comics; so, it being faithful to the source material wasn't a big issue to me. But, it is understandable to be turned off by it being different.

But now I am sad that the movie wasn't a hit as I now wish there would have been a sequel where the dames did battle with aliens.

Yeah, I like the updated-far-more-violent-version-of-Ikari-Warriors look to it.

And HT, that's some seriously great news for me.  Thanks.

A few more "Bad Movies We Love" from Rupert Pupkin Speaks:

2019: After the Fall of New York (1983)
International copyright law was never more glorious ignored than in 1980s Italy. An entire industry grew around the bankrupt recreating of successful American genre fare. When John Carpenter’s Escape from New York made a splash in the states, the Italians released After the Fall of New York with a just-dissimilar-enough-to-not-invite-actual-litigation plot and a hilarious, dumpster-diving production design. Our lead character, I’m hesitant to use the word hero given his teenage girl fashion sense, searches through the ruins of New York for the last fertile female. Snake Plissken is unquestionably one of cinema’s most badass badasses, but he never had to tangle with ape-men, flamethrowers, and creepy-ass clown robots.

Battle Beyond the Stars (1980)
Roger Corman didn’t want to simply capitalize on the monumental success of Star Wars, he wanted to do so while also cribbing the plot of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. John Saxon plays a planet-consuming d-bag who sets his sights on the obnoxiously peaceful world known as Akir (yup), whose dopiest dope must then gather warriors from all over the cosmos to fight for them. Ships crafted from melted garbage, popular character actors who should have ridden off into the multiple sunsets long ago, and battle sequences that could only be rivaled by a game of laser tag in a failing strip mall, Battle Beyond the Stars is a week-old sci-fi casserole reheated on an engine block. Sidenote: This was the first ever effects job for a young James Cameron.

Blackjack (1998)
Giving your action hero a crippling fear is a bold move, but exposing that vulnerability can engender a sense of empathy in your audience. Now, if that crippling fear is of the color white, you should hire a new screenwriter. But such is the psychological malady facing Dolph Lundgren in John Woo’s made-for-TV miss Blackjack. He is a nose-breaking, gun-toting, trampoline-bouncing ass-kicker undone by the terrifying sight of…milk. While the film features some of Woo’s best stateside stunt work, its harebrained conceit is stifling. Can’t wait to see the sequel…about the bodyguard hampered by his pathological fear of precipitation

HunterTarantino, It is too bad that The Expendables 2 found disks...Expendable, as the game looks...Awesome!  If Ubisoft ever puts it on disk, I would buy it!  Capcom did put some of their downloadable games on to the Capcom Digital Collection.  Wolf Of The Battlefield Commando 3 is very cool!  WOTB is an excellent Run N' Gun Game!

This is good to hear, as when I saw that trailer, I was all "AAAAAWWWWWW. Fucking Xbox." then Hunter says it's coming to the PSN and then I'm happy.

Bait isn't that bad. I caught it when it first came out, and bought the dvd not long after that. It was actually one of the first dvds I ever got. It's not amazing, but Jeffery Donovan is in it, wearing a big purple fuzzy hat.

3. THE LONG RIDERS

5. THE DRIVER

6. EXTREME PREJUDICE

7 THE WARRIORS

8. HARD TIMES

9. JOHNNY HANDSOME

10 UNDISPUTED

Hey, HT: what did you think of the W. Hill produced BLUE CITY?

Uh...holy shit! That is autobought as well! Even though I think I already read somewhere that it's a jank ass game. I'm still buying it because it's four player co-op EXPENDABLES, and that close quarters combat/finishing move stuff looks fantastic! Kind of looks like an update of Mercs (an old favorite of me and my friends), which makes sense.

August 17th can't get here fast enough! I'm taking some vacation time around then, just so I can properly bask in the reflective glory of The Raid: Redemption blu-ray, Sleeping Dogs (which used to be True Crime: Hong Kong), Expendables 2, Strikeback, which I'm just gonna blind buy, Grosse Pointe Blank blu-ray, and/or taking a road trip to an arcade for my birthday and/or trying to get laid too.

Xbox Live Arcade needs to get their shit together and release Retro City Rampage already. Been waiting for this game for about 2 years now. Out of their Summer of Arcade, looks like I'll only be getting Deadlight (an awesome looking zombie game, kind of in the style of the great Shadow Complex). Waiting for Mark of the Ninja also.

Haven't been watching much B action lately and I'm gonna have to change that asap. I've mostly been doing marathons of Parks and Rec on netflix instant, and just last night I started High School of the Dead anime series and it's fucking awesome!

Crap! I thought Netflix was shipping me THE SUBSTITUTE & 187 today, but the former got bumped to "Long Wait". I hate that.

I guess you'll have to find a... substitute.

You might wanna keep it that way. Too bad they didn't make it more of a buddy movie between Foxx and David Morse. That could have been funny. What we got stunk.

2 is lame, but 3 and 4 are a hoot. Treat loosens up a bit more in the later sequels. Have a feeling you'd hate them though.

Watched 187 a few days back. A little heavy-handed at times, especially the end, but overall it holds up well. I like that for the most part Sam Jackson is fairly subtle in his role. Feel like if the movie had been made in 2007 instead of '97 that he'd be screaming in every other scene.

John Heard is quite good as a teacher who has just given up and is ready to crack. The scene where he shows Jackson his gun collection is a doozy.

Catching up...

THIRD FAVORITE BRUCE WILLIS MOVIE excluding Die Hard films:  If you're counting ensemble stuff, PULP FICTION or SIN CITY.  If not, UNBREAKABLE or THE FIFTH ELEMENT.

THUNDER RUN.  Can't say I liked it a whole lot, sadly.  Liked the Tucker character, though.  The uneven tone (violence and nudity, yet homespun and sweet) pulled me out of it.  Remake it with a huge budget, and R rating and Gary Busey as the lead and I'm first in line.

WOLVERINE SEQUEL.  I'm in. Frank Miller's WOLVERINE limited series is still some of my favorite comic book material ever (still have my original issues in near-mint).  A movie that does these books justice would kick my ass through my face.  Mangold & McQuarrie have what it takes.

CRITERION SALE.  Payday cannot come fast enough.  I'm only getting three this year (THE KILLING, THREE OUTLAW SAMURAI and GODZILLA).  I must be gettin' old.

POINT BLANK is awesomeness.  Love it to bits.

unlike most of carpenter's films, I feel like ENY aged the worst...still a classic, but a little more difficult for me to watch today

Problem with it has always been the action. It just never has much spark. I'd definitely put in my top-5 Carpenter but mainly for the characters and the atmosphere. That's its strengths.

Good luck with that. If nothing else you can always just go with the HAND NINJA routine.

I've known that the middle of next month will be insane. I mean, Jaws is coming out on Blu-Ray on the 14th and so are Death Wish II through 4, and there's what you've mentioned already. What a week that will be.

Awesome. I'll have to at least scan through the video to look at all the wacky things mentioned in the description. They had me at "had to tangle with ape-men, flamethrowers, and creepy-ass clown robots".

I dig the film a whole lot but I can't really argue with the above statement. Much of what makes it great is the atmosphere, the characters, the bitchin' score and the overall attitude, rather than with the action scenes.

I had a blast with THE SUBSTITUTE. Berenger was great, and i got a kick out of the character actors they got to fill out his merc crew (Luis Guzman and William Forsythe? Yes!) Forsythe was especially fun. I loved corrupt ass Ernie Hudson, even if I guessed right away that he was bad. He got a perfect -on the nose if you will- death. My favorite scene tho was early on when Berenger took charge of the class (Power perceived is power achieved). It was badass and classic Berenger. I hope Eko never had to do that to get his kids' respect! Verdict: a top shelf 90's B

Browsing Wiki, I came across this criticism from the A.V.:

"There have been plenty of movies about white people coming into inner-city schools and whipping the students into shape, but nothing quite like The Substitute, which brings the subtly racist, paternalistic elements of those films right to the surface."

It's all about tone. There was no attempt at a serious realism. It would be like getting upset at a DEATH WISH sequel.

After seeing the film again (my Dad asked me when was the last time I'd seen it, and I said in January, and he said he saw it on tv some time last year.), a couple of things that I've known for a long time that didn't make it in this film (one made it into the sequel) came to my mind and made me glad they weren't included.

The first is the plot point of the explosive charges in Snake's neck. Originally it was supposed to be that fake virus that was used in Escape From L.A., and I'm really glad that it was decided upon to actually have a real threat. It really makes the film a lot more intense, especially at the end. You feel for Snake Plissken, and you want him to make it, because it's a very real threat that his arteries will explode. It would have been a massive disappointment to find out it was all a ruse. I mean, I get it. It's a trick, and just adds to the downbeat ending, but I think it would have ruined an otherwise great movie.

The other one is choosing to use a reprise of the main theme over the "Snake Shake." "Snake Shake" is way too upbeat (and that's pretty much the reason it wasn't used.) to end the film, and it just makes me sit up as soon as the theme starts playing as Snake is taking the tape apart. It's the best way to end the film.

Also, after all these years, it's still surprising and depressing that in the span of about 2 minutes, we lose Cabbie, Brain, and Maggie. I still wish that they had made it out with them.

Wasn't the finale awesome? Plus I dig the sleazy lawyer that Berenger makes shit his pants. Plus JANUS looks a lot like Michael Bay. Berenger laughing at the videotape is still great.

I've never had to get like that to get respect, which I think is pretty great, but I've had to lay down the law on more than one occasion. Same as Erix probably has as well. I'm not complaining though. I'm off for the summer. Of course with a few actual substituting gigs last month and the testing gig I'm doing this week. Both of which my Dad set up for me. Nothing like earning a little extra scratch during the summer.

Hey guys...

It's been a while, I know. But... Um... As David Patrick Kelly once said, I was BUSY.

Playing catch'up I guess...

Seen some movies. I liked but didn't love The Amazing Spider-Man. I'll probably go on their thread to post more explicit thoughts. But basically it's a well'made superhero action film with a likable cast and some wit. It lacks the style and flare of the Raimi flicks but you already knew that. Overall, I'd say it does the job enough that I want to see more adventures with this cast. But, man, that villain gets worse every time I think about him. In any case, most of the real hate for the movie comes from the Raimi diehards and I think it's a little misplaced and unfair. The movie itself is nowhere near "bad," in my opinion.

I also spent a couple of days revisiting Undisputed 2 and III. Those are such fun films. And the third is definitely the more terrific of the two. Boyka is such a great character that even 2 years later still seems like too long to wait for a proper sequel.

Also watched The Grey. I thought it was a fantastic film, though I can see it not connecting with some people. It was marketed as "Liam Neeson beats up wolves with his bare hands!!!" and it is not that movie. But I think it's a wonderfully-made humanist thriller that combines Ernest Hemingway and Cormac McCarthy into a solid package. It riveted me and made me think about life.  Joe Carnahan delivered on the artist performance he showed with Narc. Finally. And Liam Neeson's performance is raw and honest, probably his best ever.

...................

Something else I wanted to talk about. ... Hold on to your hats. ... No, I'm not in any way crazy. .... Hear me out.

On a friend's enthusiastic recommendation, I started taking a look at the new ThunderCats show that started last year. And, get this... It's fucking great! Watched the first couple of episodes and it was easy to get into and a lot of fun. Cool, anime-style graphics, good voice acting... And they give the thing an epic, cinematic adventure feel - complete with a John Williams-style score. Plus it's serialized, which I forund interesting and appropriate. I haven't watched an episode of Game of Thrones (I'll get around to it eventually). But I guess I know enough about it to know that this cartoon might be kind of like that, but for kids.

Anyway, you guys out there with a taste for this (like fleed) might want to check it out. And those of you with kids, here's some real action entertainment you can share with them no problem.

Feel more or less the same way. Welcome back, Erix!

You might want to catch the Tron Uprising TV Series as well. Olivia Wilde even returned as Quorra in last week's episode.

Seeing Berenger mentioned above made me remember some recent cinematic trauma I forced upon myself.

During the runup to Prometheus, I went on a mission to watch every Ridley Scott movie. So far, the only one I've missed is 1492. Until I see that, I can't technically call it the worst, but for now, it gets Honorary Worst Ridley Scott Movie That Has Ever Been Made Or Will Ever Be Made: 1987's Someone To Watch Over Me starring Tom Berenger, Doctor Melfi from Sopranos, Mimi Rogers, and Duck from Mad Men cameoing in the movie's only halfway interesting scene.

I can barely fathom a way to express how awful and pointless and empty this bit of 80s mainstream puffery is. For the curious, know that this is BAD BAD bad, not good bad, or funny bad, or interesting bad. It's the movie replaying on an endless loop on every TV in the special hell that awaits me.

My opinion on Tom Berenger is neutral, as all I can really remember is Platoon, which he was solid in. In this movie, he plays Da Noo Yawk Cop as a mouthbreathing near-imbecile. It is not a good role. Him and his wife Doctor Melphi spend about 60% of the movie spouting off at each other in awful Noo Yawk accents. The objective of these scenes seems to be to constantly remind the viewer that they are, in fact, in New York, and you should be as miserable as they are. Also, there's some plot about some mob guy trying to kill Mimi Rogers. So, everybody stands around waiting for him to try to kill her. He tries to kill her. Then Tom Berenger bangs Mimi Rogers, feels bad about it. Then the guy tries to kill her again. Movie over. Now you don't have to see it.

This movie has a distinct place in Ridley's filmography, as it is his first normal present day film, and only 2nd movie set on our planet Earth. The only logical conclusion is that Ridley was trying to go mainstream, and get in the studios good graces, after Legend underperformed. He thought this generic, thrill-free thriller was the way to do it. A few scenes are lit and shot well, that is the only competent thing about this movie.

However, this movie paved the way for his next real-world effort. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, action masterpiece Black Motherfucking Rain followed in 1989. If STWOM set the stage at all for that movie coming into being, it was all worth it.

Erix, Welcome Back!  I enjoyed The Amazing Spider-Man more than you. I like the Raimi Trilogy, but I find the new film to be far more...Amazing!  Not only is the casting better, but I...Love seeing that Parker creates his own web shooters and tech.  It is neat to see he is the scientific genius of the comics.  I eagerly await...Spider-Man The Sequel or whatever the filmmakers call it when it...Swings into theaters in 2014!Thank you for thinking of me whilist watching the new Thundercats.  I do enjoy cartoons and anime.  I do not care for the original Thundercats.  The new one also doesn't interest me.  There are not too many cartoons that I will be watching outside of...Disney XD's Marvel Universe series...The Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Ultimate Spider-Man, Nicktoon's...NEW Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (September 29th), and in 2013 Marvel Universe expands to include...Avengers Assemble (replacement for EMH), HULK Agent of S.M.A.S.H. and Iron Man!  The one new Anime series I would...Love to see is...Space Battleship Yamato 2199!  I have seen clips on youtube, and It looks as...Awe-Inspiring as the original series released almost...40 years earlier.  1974 was when the original Space Battleship Yamato was introduced.

Saw two pretty awesome movies the other day.

Started out with Umberto Lenzi's ALMOST HUMAN. Tomas Milan is a sleezebag criminal who kidnaps a mobster's daughter and holds her for ransom. Though his plan essentially seems to be, walk into a room and kill everyone, under the guise of being a criminal genius. Tremendous asshole, and somehow, he's the lead. But Inspector Henry Silva is on his tail, and he's about to be pushed to his breaking point. It's a pretty decent crime effort, good Ennio Morricone music, and a badass classic ending.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Silva corners the thug and says, "You're accused of the crime of kidnapping, which is punishable by DEATH." He lets him run a little bit, then puts a few slugs in his back. The cops arrive, and he says, "Tell the chief he was trying to flee, when he was gunned down by EX-Inspector Whatever My Name Is." Except, of course, he says his name. What am I, IMDb?

I figure you can't really spoil Italian crime films, so if you really need to, check the spoiler.

Then I saw the full four and a half hour cut of the John Woo-produced "Warriors Of The Rainbow: Seediq Bale." It's the true story about how the Japanese tried to surpress indigenous clans in Taiwain in the early twentieth century, and how they fought back by beheading a bunch of poncy Japanese troops. It was released as a two and a half hour movie earlier this year but the NY Asian Film Festival debuted the full version, and surprisingly, it's still nearly wall-to-wall action. Rock climbing, chases, hunts, beheadings, stabbings, the whole nine yards. Maybe it's not as good, but if you're looking for this year's 13 Assassins, this is it.

Lovitz is ctually really, really good in a somewhat-serious role in the little-seen "Casino Jack," where Kevin Spacey plays shit-eating Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff. The movie also features a sleazy turn by Barry Pepper and a memorable showcase for the poster to a film Abramoff proudly produced: RED SCORPION.

Hyams' HIGH NOON riff OUTLAND hitting Blu today. A fun, pre-UNTOUCHABLES comeback Sean Connery flick. One of your favorites, Molt?

John Heard is quite good as a teacher who has just given up and is ready to crack. The scene where he shows Jackson his gun collection is a doozy.

Going well with that quote Elvis posted about the inherent racism in the white person tames the inner city savages genre, I almost wish that Sam Jackson's character would have been white, then it would have added some uncomfortable layers to the thing.  I think I'm going to write a mash up of Teachers/187.  Alex Jurel, yo.

Also, "I've had it with these motha fucking kids in this motha...."  Okay, sorry for that.  Lame.

A recent addition to my 70's crime film/blaxploitation faves TRICK BABY is available on Instant. It's a pretty good character study, and underrated genre film.

A movie I've pimped before to so far no avail, but those of you with Cinemageddon should definitely seek out, is the suspense/action  thriller NIGHT OF THE JUGGLER. A sleazy New York jungle time capsule, with a surprisingly great central James Brolin performance. Plot: A tough, New York ex-cop relentlessly searches for his kidnapped teenage daughter whom is held by a twisted psycho after mistaking her for the daughter of a wealthy businessman. Verdict: A sleeper that unexpectedly blew me away.

I enjoyed the TUFF TURF write up, HT. Nicely done.

Well, anime/manga usually isn't my thing but it sounds like the type of thing that appeals to... well, people like us.

That would be pretty nice. I've heard a lot about Tesla in recent years and he was a genius... along with being batshit insane. That sort of story needs to be told on screen.

Didn't Issac Florentine direct a few episodes of this?

Yes he did pay his dues by directing some Power Rangers episodes.

I hadn't even heard of it before until just now, but I know now to skip it. I guess that if you want to watch Berenger in a New York City film, everyone should stick to Fear City, as flawed as that is.

That sounds good to me. 13 Assassins was a film I dug when I saw it last year, so I'll keep an eye out for that, especially the full version.

Actually, it's now easier to find and watch than tracking it down on that website, if you get my drift... from what I can tell, James Brolin has an epic beard and with that and his hairdo he resembles Eddie Rabbitt, so that is enough to amuse me. Maybe I should watch it to see if he has a specific set of skills and if he's willing to find the killer and then kill him.

I already went to my local Barnes & Noble and the one thing I got that is relevant to this thread is the Criterion Blu-Ray of a movie discussed and praised here in the past, Blow Out. I had never seen it before but I'll trust the consensus here and presume it will be something I will enjoy.

Anyone seen the new TOTAL RECALL International Poster?

Colin Farrel looks zoned out. And Jessica Biehl amazes us with her Bland look #37 here.

I remember we discussed Someone To Watch Over Me on the first B-Movie Podcast and Erix said "Ridley Scott can't shoot a sex scene to save his life." and that's hilarious as well as true. Someone To Watch Over Me SUCKS. Although it does have Jimmy Fingers from Marked For Death as his partner. That was the one good thing I got out of it.

I'm off to see A Clockwork Orange at the theater. Be back on later this evening!

Thanks for the kind words on my Tuff Turf writeup, Elvis!

I still haven't seen 187. I need to. But can we hope, Molt, that Rene would, if he had to, ride his motorcycle through the school to save someone in dire need from the clutches of a nefarious teen gang?

Also, Erix:

CUT THAT SHIT OUT!

I've never seen Tuff Turf but it sounds like quite the film, and yep, now there's 10,000 and 1 movies I hope to see one of these days.

Meanwhile, now I REALLY know to avoid that movie when man of forgiving tastes Rene says the film ^sucks^ and only found one redeeming thing about it.
