Terrific Random Roles interview with Ed Lauter over on AV Club today.

I'm really digging reading this Random Roles interviews.

Got back a little while ago from seeing A Clockwork Orange. My friend was already there, as I got there about 2 minutes late, but I was there to see Alex's huge face on the theater screen as the film started up. The theater was packed with HIPSTER DOUCHEBAGS who wouldn't know a good film if it slapped them in the face and made them lick its shoe. They probably only know it from Hot Topic or other "ironic" means. However, the theater was howling with laughter throughout, as the movie is legitimately hilarious. So my friend and I had a great time with the movie, and afterward, we got our tickets for the DARKKNIGHTATHON next week. Even though we're both bigger fans of the Burton films, we couldn't pass this up.

So tonight I got to see Aubrey Morris, Steven Berkoff, Malcolm McDowell, Patrick Magee and the body of Darth Vader, David Prowse on the big screen. Yeah, I'm glad I saw it, and now I've see 2 classic masterpieces this summer.

I need to go through that Random Roles section to check out all the ones they've done throughout the past 5 or so years as many guys and gals we enjoy overall have been interviewed for it.

From looking at what you said on Twitter and here I am not sure what those Hipster Douchebags did to fire you up, aside from looking like d-bags by wearing skinny jeans, their grandfather's sweaters and dark-rimmed glasses. I usually don't care for them either but I don't hate everything about those fellows and their general idea of embracing unheralded things while hating on most popular things. Hell, I am a guy who rarely watches fictional television but that's more being odd than anything else. I understand they didn't really make distracting noise throughout so that was at least good and I am glad you still had a great time checking out a classic movie the way it should be seen.

Hopefully you'll get more opportunities to see older films like that theatrically, even if it means hanging out with people you don't like. As I've said many times before I've been lucky in being able to see a nice slate of all-time greats and cult hits on the big screen, although it hasn't happened as much as some places which used to do it don't do it anymore as unfortunately there aren't enough people like us around Orlando who actually get their ass to the cineplex to check it out.

Love that Lauter interview. That guy remembers everything.

I'm just irritated by them. You know like in Step Brothers where Rob Riggle tells Will Ferrell there's something about his face that just makes him want to punch him. That's the way I feel about hipsters and their skinny jeans. I mean, I'm not going to rant about hating on them, but as I said, they actually were quiet for the most part, and I'm glad for that. They just really annoy me. I'm also glad I got out of college before the place got swamped with them.

I'll give these hipsters one thing though. They weren't trying to be film intellectual elitists like another douchebag at The Thing screening at the Drafthouse who was talking about most of the things on screen, and how either they suck, or are great in an ironic way and stuff like "Y'know, I just started watching that old G.I. Joe cartoon, and I thought it was going to suck, but I'm really liking it." Among other crap that I was being really annoyed by. If there's anything I hate it's an idiot who's talking like he knows everything and is trying to be cool by referencing old cartoons that he thought he'd hate, but surprise! he likes it. Right behind me. During the whole time of seeing those awesome music videos and old commercials. I was able to tune him out after a while and enjoy Oingo Boingo and Duran Duran, and he and his friends shut up when the movie started, so that was at least good.

Ah, sounds like I'm venting, but I'm in a good mood! Finishing up Louie: Season 2.

In many ways, Dredd feels like an action film from a simpler time, like Assault on Precinct 13 or Escape From New York.

People are saying it has a John Carpenter-ish score, too!

wadew1, That is...Awesome News!  Deadline said that Dredd could be similar to...Punisher War Zone in tone and unfortunately similar...box office.  I...Dredd the over 2 month wait for some...Mega City Run N' Gun Fun!

DREDD is like an '80s Paul Verhoeven sci-fi movie with gratuitous bloody violence.

That sounds very promising. A good, violent Dredd flick, whaddaya know? It's definitely on my radar now!

Sounds encouraging. But will it make the $50 million we need to get a sequel?

The Legend of The Sensei continues

Wow.

Folks, don't forget the EX2 panel is today. Sly, Arnie and Dolph trading wisecracks. And Van Damme navel-gasing. Hopefully his dogs are well.
I hope JCVD is utterly insane throughout the whole panel. With Sly playing it as the straight guy amongst a group of weirdos.

IGN reviews DREDD.

They loved it.

Can we go back in time and make this happen?

Quint at Aintitcool also loved DREDD. He said it reminded him of PUNISHER: WAR ZONE. Now that's a recommendation.

Hey guys, i've been away for a while.  The home situation isn't good right now, but i'm kinda back.

I've gotta pay my respects to the late great Ernest Borgnine.  There's nothing to say other than, thank you.  I checked out Emperor of the North because of you guys talking it up, so thanks to you also.

I came across a Dwayne Johnson interview that ended with this anecdote:

I saw CLOCKWORK at the Warner Brothers 75th Anniversary fest some 15 plus years ago. I was turned off the film and disturbed by the audience reactions. I was especially disgusted by laughing and cheering during the rape scene. It remains the only Kubrick film I don't like. (I think Kubrick himself had second thoughts about the effectiveness of the violence and the glorification of Alex)

Watched 187 last night. Loved it. Sam Jackson is subtly great, delivering one of the best performances of his 90's-early 00's classic run. (Amazing in the DEER HUNTER climax) John Heard is also quite good, with the gun collection scene Molt mentioned the heart of the movie. Deftly directed by Kevin Reynolds, perhaps his best work since THE BEAST. Like Keith said, it would have added another more interesting layer if the teacher Jackson played had been white (Costner!) Still, an effective thriller, that's aged remarkably well. While apples and oranges, both the more serious-minded and tragic 187 and the more fun THE SUBSTITUTE achieved what they set out to be. Both are worth a look.

187 still delivers, could have done without the stat at the end about the number of teachers attacked by students and the "This film was written by a teacher" bit. That was Afterschool Special stuff.

According to this, THE EXPENDABLES 2 has a 102 mins Running time (including credits).

I've wanted this to happen since 1988, with an extra added bonus.  "McClane meets Riggs & Murtaugh...  meets John Matrix from COMMANDO."  In this age of THE AVENGERS, a SILVER PICTURES heroes ensemble piece could be a friggin' retro summer blast.  The EXPENDABLES movies are fairly close, but I want the equivalent "cops in Los Angeles" version.  Shit, go off-page and throw Marion Cobretti in there too.  He's not a Silver character, but he'd fit pretty well.  Maybe a movie is unlikely, but I'd read a comic or script on this any day.

Damn, I'm flashbacking like crazy now.  Gotta fire up my Super-Nintendo and grab some Pop Rocks and Coke.

Trivia That Everybody Here Probably Knows: Funny enough: the DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE screenplay was originally begun as a script called SIMON SAYS, which was nearly rewritten... as a LETHAL WEAPON sequel.

Supposedly, Sgt. Yates, the generic, hard-assed police detective from South Park, is based on Inspector Walter Cobb.

Let's just hope we get that R rating!

We will. There is an article in Total Film this month about EX2 where Simon West confirms again that it will be an R.

102 minutes and rated R. Between this news, and the news that Judge Dredd is fabulous and a violent HARD R film, it's been a good day for action films. Is it A Good Day To Die Hard? Well, if that one becomes rated R, I figure people will ease up on it.

That is good to hear. That might be another film I end up seeing theatrically this year, given how much I enjoyed how wacked-out Punisher: War Zone was.

I actually had not heard of that tale either but it's pretty great, especially imagining him with a giant 80's afro and carrying around a massive boombox.

I imagine it would be a turn-off having to deal with such an audience reaction. I certainly didn't react that way during the bad scene in question.

I like hearing that news but I won't be at ease until I see it officially confirmed. Then it will be a day for celebration.

I must say I've only had such a reaction with that film only. I mean I liked NATURAL BORN KILLERS in the theatre. I think it was the viceral, powerful quality of the violence and the way it made me react differently than the midnight audience I was with. It was a jarring disconnect. I haven't revisited it since, and need to see the film again on my own terms.

Re: DIE HARD LETHAL WEAPON CROSSOVER...   So, the important music geek question.  Who'd we want to see compose the score for the DIE/LETHAL/and-or-COMMANDO crossover, what with the great Michael Kamen being unavailable and all?  I'd vote for James Horner, being that his COMMANDO score is so much fun... but then the score for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN was a little wanting.  Do we give Marco Beltrami (LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD and A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD) a shot?  Or go with the always-reliable Alan Silvestri?

Man, Seagal continues to be insane, and this time I swear it looked like he had a shadow right underneath his toupee. Like it's a cap or something he's wearing.

Van Damme flaked and didn't show up for the panel. The vandammefan forums are all ablaze with pissed off folks who went to the convention to see him on stage.

Looking into the rumor that he bailed to finish editing THE EAGLE PATH.

I vote Horner, too. He can just bite his 48 HRS. score again.

About to watch a 80's movie I DVRed off of SMC this morning called FAST FORWARD. It's about a breakdancer from Ohio trying to make it in NYC. Kitschy fun.

I would have paid good money to be in the audience for this panel.

I really wanted to see a bunch of goofy "Van Damme posing at Comicon" photos, but he probably had some kind of CHIHUAHUA EMERGENCY.

It's too bad, I think he would have gotten a lot of praise from the costumed con weirdos for some of his action films and JCVD.

Yep, this would have been a grand showcase for JC. Maybe his son isn't with him in San Diego to make sure he doesn't whore around.

Reading that Jackie Chan was also there for an ARMOR OF GOD 3 panel. Was asked why he didn't do EX2 and he said couldn't due to filming AOG3. Politely said he hopes he can do EX3.

Van Damme not showing up is a travesty. If anyone could have immensely benefited from the exposure there, it would be him. I hope some footage shows up. I want to hear Sly saying "Am I drinking?" in response to being asked a question by some twins.

So anyway, JEAN VILAIN not being there sucks, but everyone else showing up is awesome, and the talk about the finale being big is enough to have me sweating from anticipation.

Hahahaha.  Comic Con is wasted on me.  I'm at the Con, and I missed that panel.  And the Armor of God one!  They didn't say anything about Jackie being there.

Boooooo

Dang nooj, you're missing more panels than Van Damme. Woooooooah!

Just a reminder: Valve/Steam's SOURCE FILMMAKER was recently released.  So now, we can all make cheap, great CGI animated action films of our own.  Fascinating stuff.  :)

Why not go with Silvestri? For the Delta Force score alone he deserves the job, I say.

Wacky, but still awesome. I mean, many of us did laugh at all the odd things we saw in the Punisher: War Zone advertisements, then we saw the film and we thought it was great.

Sad to say I am not surprised he flaked. He really is his own worst enemy. But doing this on such a big stage is quite disappointing, to say the least.

Neat-o. Unfortunately I imagine it's not an M-rated game, so thus if I were to make my own 80's action film on there, there won't be any CGI boobies! Damn. There goes my film being authentic.

Silvestri's a good choice, too.  As long as whoever does it keeps the guitar/saxophone motif for Riggs & Murtaugh and the jingle bells for McClane.

Oh, it is Rated M.  Very violent, but that's part of it's charm.  As for boobies, well, some good-natured programmer will probably have them ready for download soon.  Sometimes... nature finds a way.  :)

Actually, it's Comic-con, so I can.

Sounds fun. Hopefully some footage will show up soon.

They'll have a Jedi show up, and Gunnar will stomp the shit out of him and call him an insect. Then shove his lightsaber up his ass. Y'know, Gunnar will use THE FORCE.

Plus I think JEAN VILAIN would just frighten them all to death.

Nice, very nice. My error then. If there was someone who was able to create a mod where Macho Man Randy Savage's head replaced the head of all the dragons in Skyrim, then I am sure someone will not only add big breasted bimbos with bouncing bobos but there will also be nudity.

Conventions aren't always my thing (then again, I've never been to one; maybe I should go to one to check it out... and laugh at all the weirdos in costumes) but the big one in San Diego I am "bleh!" about as whatever it used to be, it now seems like a total corporate phony event and I usually just ignore it each July.

However, if you follow Dolph on Twitter than you'll see that a handful of Tweets of articles that talk about their big conference today. I'll mention this one in particular as it has the most photos.

I dig Star Wars but I laughed at Rene's comments. Not to be stereotypical but I can just imagine the type of nerds there, the ones who are so socially inept they make *me* normal in comparison and personal hygiene isn't always the best.

Oh, speaking of Boyle's request... as long as it's available, a short 3 minute clip.

Thanks! You guys should track down the latest issue of TOTAL FILM, with the Expendables on the cover. A good read. It's a worth it just for the hilarious Van Damme interview. When I have time I'll post a few snippets. Apparently maltreatment of his beloved goose is a motivating factor for his character on ENEMIES CLOSER.
