In line for tdkr saw the thing remake yesterday...pretty bad. The CGI was real hit or miss. The only parts that were good were the opening 10 min and the end/prologue to the original.

Man, those are a lot of awesome free outdoor screenings, and actual film projections. Really wish they had stuff like that down here.

I'm still pretty "eh" about The Dark Knight Rises, but I'll admit there's still a lot of good stuff in there I liked.

As far as The Thing Prequel, well, I loved it a lot, and it was one of my favorite films of last year. Of course it doesn't compare at all to the original film which I'm proud to say I got to see on actual film last month.

The CGI in the THE THING '11 looked pretty good, it's just not scary. There's not a lot of yuck factor to it.

Other problem is Winstead has zero presence.

Still, you Texans have more still-operating drive-ins, the Alamo Drafthouse, awesome deserts and truly-authentic Mexican food.   That's all pretty sweet, too!  :)

Another "Bad Movies We Love" from Rupert Pupkin:

Maniac Cop 2 – 1990 – William Lustig

Hold the phone, buddy. You're starting with the sequel instead of the original film in the series?  Yea, I am. You see, I love all three Maniac Cop films with a fiery passion, but each one is a different level of dumb. The first film was your basic costumed slasher film based around the premise of a bad cop seemingly coming back from the dead to kill people with impunity, whether they'd done anything wrong or not. In that film, Matt Cordell was Jason Vorhees with a badge and a wicked night stick/sword. Maniac Cop 2 took that premise and flipped it on it's ear. It defied us to believe that Cordell was actually a good cop that had been set up by the mayor, turning Maniac Cop 2 into what is essentially a revenge film....sorta. It makes no damn sense, but I just love that Cohen and Lustig didn't take the easy route for the sequel. God knows I would have still tuned in for “crazy zombie cop beheads woman for jaywalking”, but “crazy zombie cop wants revenge for being wrongfully imprisoned even though he mercilessly killed a dozen or so random innocent people in the last film” was so much more enjoyable. I could have also gone with Maniac Cop 3 aka Cordell Takes a Zombie Bride, but that movie isn't near as fun for some reason.

Those pictures look awesome. Still no word on when it's coming out? Why do I get the sneaking suspicion that this film is getting released around January just like Regeneration was several years ago.

This is true. :) There's a drive-in about 10 miles or so from where I live, and yeah, we've got authentic Mexican food all over the place here. It is pretty nice, but I do wish there was a Drafthouse a lot closer than a 4 hour drive.....

This was the first Maniac Cop film I ever saw as a kid, and I loved it. Saw some of the first one not too long after seeing the second one, and didn't see the third one until years later. I need to get my dvds of them out and revisit the trilogy. It's been a while, and coincidentally, I've been thinking about them lately.

Nothing official yet. Just faint chatter that it would be out in October. That makes sense to me if they're looking to get some juice from EX2's release.

Hopefully Hyams is pushing for a good theatrical release, and not just a limited release. By good I mean over a thousand screens, and not just some "LA/NY" type thing. We all want to bask in the 3D awesome that will be Universal Soldier 4.

Anybody here catching the TOTAL RECALL remake?

I can't wait for the split second PG-13 shot for the 3 Breasted Girl!

Maybe if it plays at the Vista. Otherwise no.

There is a pic online that the 3 breasted girl has a strap covering her nipples...I am not seeing this piece of shit (in theaters at least)

I am totally avoiding TDKR forums because I don't want to be flamed but I am pretty mixed on the flick.

I think the best part of the entire film was Anne Hathaway's Selina Kyle.  She really stole every scene she was in and made my interest peak (as well as other parts of my body as well).  JGL was great in his role too even if it was a bit heavy handed at times.  I thought Bane came off very wasted as a character.  Overall, the movie just took (batman) FOREVER to get started.  Mopey Bruce Wayne was boring as fuck.  A lot of logic loopholes that felt like pretty big oversights for Nolan and his writing team.

I think the best part of the movie was the ending though.  It felt very un-Nolan like to leave it as open ended as he did, but then again it doesn't mean another director can't take over for him.

Dare I say, he's a favorite filmmaker of mine.

I don't know about great, but the 3D in Afterlife was great.  The whole film was made up of shots that would look great in 3D.

If we're talking entertainment, then he can deliver that.  What he can't do, is rise to the occasion and deliver something special.

The only reason I'm going to watch it is for Cranston.  Though I suspect your average Breaking Bad episode makes far better use of him.

Correct me if i'm wrong anyone: is Drive the only film he's done that used him right, since his star rose?

I think I'll go out on a limb and say Rises and Begins are on par with each other below The Dark Knight. I think Begins is tighter and better focused on its protagonist, but I admire the ambition and sprawling prowess of Rises more, especially with regards to how Nolan manages to turn Gotham into a near-apocalyptic, full-blown dystopia. Especially with Bane's Humungus-esque appearance, the savagery of a thousand (probably more) criminals treating the city as their own playground of sick fantasies, and the way the city ends up fortified and the "trials" being held, you can tell Nolan was drawing influence from Mad Max, Escape from New York and all of its imitators in their vision. The nuke was only the icing on the cake.

Just remember that's there's other gents out there (like me, and I think Perfect Weapon is another) who didn't love the film either, but still liked parts of it. As I've said before, the only Nolan Batman film I love entirely is Batman Begins. I've heard all this talk about it having a shitty plot and unconvincing fights and other shit, and I don't see that. Just a good Batman movie. These other 2 films just have parts I like in them, and not as a whole.

Agreed on Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle. She's the MVP of the film, alongside JGL, and Hardy as Bane, even though I do agree in him being very wasted as a character. All of which stems from that shitty 3rd act twist.

Funny you mention Vantage Point as my friend and I were talking about it the other day, and he was saying he wants to see it again since he liked it. I liked it too. Even more so each time they rewound the scene and people in the theater groaned and got pissed.

Enjoy it. One of, if not THE, most underrated horror films of the last 25 years. Still has one of the more creepy and unsettling endings you'll ever see.

In fact, Boston's about to get crazy with cool screenings of older films in the coming weeks.  Many free and outdoor screenings, too.  Get this...

That is pretty great overall. There's a spot in Orlando which shows free older movies in a park but I haven't checked it out yet. There is more than one drive-in in the Central Florida area and I've been to most of them. My favorite times there included seeing the perfect double-bill of Piranha 3D and Machete and getting to watch Grindhouse in that format; several people that were sitting outside of their vehicle by the time that Death Proof ended marked the F out for that ending. I need to go to one again when something catches my eye.

Well-said. As for the Post-Release thread at least, the reaction there has been rather mixed (at least by the time I last looked in there two days ago) so it's not like you'll get eviscerated for saying you thought it was a mixed bag, as a number of people have said the same thing.

That is a good point you bring up there. Maybe when I see it again I'll notice and appreciate that aspect more, even if my overall opinion doesn't really change. Although who knows it may, given I had seen two movies right before it in a long day and many things will look bad compared to The Dark Knight, IMO.

I can't believe I did not think of it sooner but Bane certainly ended up being Humungus-esque in terms of how he looked and how he sounded. I know people think that Bane sounded weird, but so did The Ayatollah of Rock-N-Rolla and the Lord is still a bitchin' character.

What a strange Monday I'll have. I won't even be going to bed until late Monday morning; I'll have to drop off a family member at an area airport at 4:30. I'll drive home and wait for a bit then head on over to a huge outdoor flea market that for some reason is only open on Mondays. I haven't been there before but I've heard much praise for it. Who knows what I'll find, but I'm hoping for gold, such as odd crap... and if it's random VHS tapes, then I might shit solid gold bricks!

I saw Wheels on Meals once on USA with my Brother, and he's a big Jackie Chan fan. This was years ago, but I remember it being pretty good for one of his early pictures. Speaking of martial arts films, and I saw this on one of the movie lists on the last page, I think it was on Engineer's, but on another forum, some guys were posting movie posters, and some were martial arts films, and 2 such ones were Master Of The Flying Guillotine, and Fearless Fighters. I figured they were probably films that were probably forgotten, but as soon as I get on Amazon and looked them up, they were surprisingly offered on quality dvds from quality companies, and Master Of The Flying Guillotine is even on a 2 disc "Anniversary" set. I'll be blind buying them for sure.

Yeah, this is one of Carpenter's latter day classics. Even if it was done in the 80's, it's one of those done after his early 80's heyday, but I guess we can squeak it by as "classic era" since it was done in the 80's. Am I the only one who thinks once the brilliant Big Trouble In Little China flopped, that Carpenter essentially said "Fuck this."? I mean that's what it really seems like, but we still got 4 more good films in a row, if you're like me who thinks Memoirs Of The Invisible Man is unjustly hated. Then we got that minor speedbump, but it's still fun, Village Of The Damned, then his last big gasp, Vampires.

Hah, I just went on this tangent about him, and you're just talking about Prince Of Darkness. It's the power of Carpenter! Anyway, Prince Of Darkness is damn creepy and great. I hope Shout! Factory gets it for their Scream! Factory line up.

I only had one or two brief spots where I couldn't understand Bane, but other than that, I loved how he sounded, but between him and The Lord Humungus, I take his voice. Even though it's really humorous seeing Bane be threatening and sounding like a Fop.

Things you do at 1:30 in the morning when nobody's looking: bump JOYSTICKS to the top of the queue.

I didn't like PRINCE OF DARKNESS. It was kind of a mash up of THE THING and ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, which should've been cool, but left me cold. I never got a sense of apocalyptic danger, or was creeped out by the evil. And the mythology played silly to me. Oh, well.

I'm considering blind buying Joysticks. I mean, the cover art has Joe Don Baker's name really big.

I saw Prince Of Darkness when I was 17 and it creeped me out, but then bought the dvd in 2006, and was still creeped out, but I appreciated it for being a freaky little horror/sci-fi film. Maybe it has less an effect the first time you see it if you're older?

Been marathoning OZ: Season 3 since I got it yesterday in the mail, after already receiving Seasons 4 and 5 last week. Still waiting on the final season, 6, to come in the mail. Looks like I'll be continuing watching the series, and watching some of the Criterion Blu-rays I've gotten. Either going to see 12 Angry Men next (haven't seen it since 1999!) or Repulsion with the lovely Catherine Deneveue.

Hey Guys, it's been a while since I've been on here.  A new job has really kept me running.  Finally got a chance to check out a couple movies this weekend.

I thought Amazing Spider-Man was fun, but had some problems with the story.  Not really sure where they're going with the whole "mysterious parents" angle, but I'm excited enough about what I saw to check out the sequel.  The design of the Lizard was pretty cool, but I thought he was kind of a "meh" villain.

Then there's TDKR!  All I can say is Wow.  Absolutely loved this movie.  Thought it was the best of the trilogy and my favourite of the three comic book movies this summer by a country mile.  Acting, Action, Storyline - first class all around.

Not sure about the new Superman trailer.  Think I'll wait until I see some more footage because I'm not quite sure about this one based on the little bit I've seen.

Now bring on EX2

Glad to hear you've got a new job, Gunner. Working pays the bills, and the bills keep the power and the food coming.

I still haven't seen The Amazing Spider-Man movie yet, but I may get the chance this week. My Parents actually went to see it today, when I went over to see Breaking Bad, they were just getting there. They liked it, and I hope I do too. I've seen 2 of the comic book movies thus far, and The Avengers is still the clear winner. Might see that one again too.

TWINKLE is a great movie.  More of a comedy with bits of action thrown in.  Not a true "jackie" movie as its sort of an OCEANS 11 of HK film stars more than anything.  As for WHEELS ON MEALS, if you watch it, please stick with it till the final 30 minutes.  The movie is really just a light action comedy romp through Spain till the last 30 minutes.  There is literally 5 minutes of action in the whole movie until the finale.  The finale more than makes up for the lack of action preceding it.

Agreed. I thought it was the most fun of the Nolan flicks. Enjoyed it even more than THE AVENGERS.

I actually follow Richard Dickson's view of BEGINS and TDK. They are well made films but i don't feel strongly about them. RISES on the other hand is a film i intend to watching agin this week for sure. It has a few flaws (of course) but i'll rate this as one of the best films i've seen in 2012 so far.

Yeah, it was the same with me. I am glad he was not incomprehensible.

Nice; very nice. Awfully high expectations to live up to but hopefully the game does not end up being a turd sandwich.

Welcome back. As long as you enjoy the job it's all good... if it pays well then all the better.

Like I promised earlier in the page I actually haven't gone to bed; I will soon after I log off of here, even if it's only in a few hours. I dropped someone off at a local airport, came back and relaxed for a bit then went on over to a huge flea market. At least on this day there was just about zilch in terms of VHS/DVD but I still ended up making some purchases. It's an interesting place and it's certainly multicultural. What I bought was in the farmer's market area. I got some boiled peanuts and fresh grapes and bananas. Good deal as I got a good amount of food for not a lot of dough. Also, I got to hear some local ask about someone's tomatoes, "How much er your tomaters?" I swear that's what he said. There's no shortage of rednecks in Florida.

"MENAHEM GOLAN - LIFE OF A CINEMANIAC" TEASER-TRAILER

http://vimeo.com/43047747#at=0

So, we're getting a Jack Ryan reboot with Chris Pine directed by Kenneth Branagh. So far, not bad choices. Truth be told, tho, I'm only really a fan of  the first in the series THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. (I should like CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER for its Milius-ness more than I do)

Clear and Present Danger has grown on me over the years.  I remember being bored to death by it in the theater.

Patriot Games has aged okay as well.

I don't think I'll ever make it through an actual Clancy novel, and believe me, I've tried.

Vern reviews GET THE GRINGO.

http://outlawvern.com/2012/07/23/get-the-gringo/#more-11718

I've to say that 2012 has been shaping out to be a great year for movies so far- CABIN IN THE WOODS, THE AVENGERS, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, THE GREY, THE HUNGER GAMES.

From all looks, SKYFALL will knock it out of the park as well.

Clear And Present Danger is probably my favorite of the Ryan films thus far, but that's because I've only seen The Hunt For Red October twice.

Going in a bit to have dinner with my Dad, and we're going to see those Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes that have been advertised at the movie theaters.

I laugh because he is in the new ABC Family show known as BUNHEADS. At least one regular in this thread has laughed uproariously at that title, always connecting it to "bunghole". I laugh too because I sure as hell had never heard of that term before; it relates to ballet. The lead girl was a Vegas showgirl who leaves there to go back to her roots with. I haven't seen Black Swan yet but I imagine I'll enjoy that more, and not just for a certain scene I already know happens with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis.

What a wacky day/night today is going to be. Besides the totally screwed up sleeping schedule, I'm going to watch all of Monday Night Raw for the first time in hell knows how long. It's their 1,000th episode and it's a 3 hour extravaganza featuring many names from the past, including The Rock. If anything of note happens I'll mention it. My brunette for the moment has to wait as I'll see her show on replay at midnight.

Speaking of brunettes I dig, yes I did hear the news about how allegedly someone has a sex tape of Minka Kelly way back when she either was right before or right after 18. While it sounds like something I'd buy along with a box of tissues, I still feel bad as what a crappy situation it is for her.

Finally, here's something astounding. A little earlier on Twitter I saw that for a few minutes Michael Madsen was trending. I thought "Uh oh", for good reason. It turns out, there's some sort of short film coming out real soon and he's in it, along with the star... Justin Bieber. On Twitter, Justin decided to Tweet out some Chuck Norris Facts for his new pal, such as "Michael Madsen has inside jokes with complete strangers", "Michael Madsen creates tornadoes by running around in circles", "Michael Madsen can ski uphill not downhill" and "Michael Madsen built the hospital he was born in". Well, Bieber tried...

More "Bad Movies We Love" from Rupert Pupkin:

I Come In Peace AKA Dark Angel (1990)
Loose cannon cop Dolph Lundgren is hunting down an alien drug dealer in Houston with his by-the-book new partner, played by Dream On’s Brian Benben. Directed by Craig R. Baxley (of Action Jackson and Stone Cold fame) with at least one script pass by a pre-Jurassic Park David Koepp, there’s a lot of talent at work here. It shows in some terrific shootouts, detective work, and the mismatched partners spouting one-liners. Even side characters make an impression, from Dolph’s coroner girlfriend who seems to have some dark stuff lurking in her relationship past to the tweaked out scientist who analyzes alien weaponry for them. And, of course, the gigantic white-haired alien drug dealer played by Matthias Hues is perfectly creepy and intimidating, especially in a third-act car stunt that’s one of our favorites.

Robot Jox (1990)
A fantastic time capsule released just after the end of the cold war era, Robot Jox is the shining example of a good "bad" movie. Great stop-motion animation and miniature sets combined with memorable characters and great set pieces make for a movie that is pure fun, while still maintaining the satire and social commentary that lie just beneath the surface. Stuart Gordon is an underrated gem of a director (genre guy or not, the man has always had chops), and the deft way he juggles all these elements and stages the epic third act battle between Achilles and Alexander is a joy to watch unfold. Sure, the effects look dated and the cold war paranoia doesn't hit as hard as it would have in the late '80s, but this movie is still loads of fun. There's a reason it's the basis for the BMFcast's positive rating system. ROBOT JOX!

Awesome. If that's the first time someone has come up with such a great idea then I'll be shocked.

I was amused to see the BMFcast podcast do a write-up on the site today. It's a great podcast and I don't always agree with them but they do enjoy low-budget and they say that Robot Jox is one of the greatest films ever made, so you have to love them.

Raw will have just ended by the time this is posted but I have to mention one potentially BIG thing on there involving one of our favorites. I'll be giving out spoilers so if you haven't seen the show yet and don't want anything spoiled, you can feel free to skip the rest of this post.

On there you saw via Skype (!) the Warlock himself, Charlie Sheen. He ended up getting in a war of words with wrestler Daniel Bryan, i.e. the guy who goes, "Yes! Yes! Yes!" all the time. Charlie challenges him to a match at Summerslam, the big pay per view they have next month. Yes, CHARLIE SHEEN WRESTLING IN A MATCH is being teased. I have zero idea where this is going as I've heard zero about it, even on the sites that offer up insider information on pro wrestling. I can't imagine him actually wrestling... right? In any case he'll be there at that pay per view.

The Rock was there and he did some things, like getting involved with the main event. Most importantly he'll be wrestling in January at the Royal Rumble against whoever the champion is.

Various old-timers made short cameos, such as Roddy Piper and Sgt. Slaughter. That was really the most interesting part of the show, the nostalgia factor and seeing those veterans there. Otherwise I wouldn't watch WWE as for the most part it's pretty terrible, even if they do have a wrestler named DOLPH ZIGGLER.

Got back a little while ago from seeing the 2 Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes on the big screen. It was obviously a digital projection, and it started about 10 minutes in on one of the special features they were showing. What was laugh worthy was they PAUSED it and the manager came in. He asked if we wanted it rewound, or just see what we missed at the end, and a few spoke for the rest of us in saying that it should be show afterward. It was shown to be a DISH NETWORK digital projection via a DVR that they had.

Still, the episodes shown, "Where No One Has Gone Before" and "Datalore" were great episodes (I'd seen Datalore before, but not the first one) both were from the first season, and both were directed by Rob Bowman. Both looked great in HD, and I may just get the show when the Blu-ray gets cheaper.

Beaks talks THE THREE STOOGES & KINGPIN with Bobby Farrelly

<I can't believe the STOOGES movie actually turned out funny. Still would have loved to have gotten the del Toro-Penn-Carrey version>

Hey, The Three Stooges movie has Craig Bierko step on Sofia Vergara's boobs and they honk. That's high art.

You know, the one time I saw Kingpin I thought it was alright but not nearly as funny as many people (including critics) did. Maybe it needs a revisit from me. I mean, I only remember bits and pieces of it; what sticks out the most is the first gag involving milking a bull. I know, what a thing to remember.

Not that milking bulls has anything to do with what I'm going to talk about for the rest of the post but tonight I watched the latest episode of Perception. It was more straight-forward than usual but still rather wacky, which is fine by me. It was an 80's themed episode as the case revolved around activity in that coke-fueled decade and the cast seemed to match it. Dan Lauria is going to be a recurring character, which amuses me. Pamela Reed and Sheryl Lee played mother and daughter. I hadn't seen either in ages. You Twin Peaks fans will be glad to know that for her mid 40's, Sheryl still looks fine. Awesomely, Tears For Fears actually plays a plot point in the episode. Of course I'd mark out for such a themed episode.

Jason Statham to play 1920's pulp hero Bulldog Drummond. That would be ace, to bad it doesn't seem they'll go period with it.

So I got my daily Sylvester Stallone google alert yesterday, what do I see? "See EXCLUSIVE photos of Sage Stallone's funeral". What a fuckin shitty headline to have. Like it's some kind of celebrity wedding. I saw on some kind of gossip mag, "Tom Cruise's psychological trauma, is his life over?" and Sly relegated to a small corner "Sage Stallone dead". Fucking terrible. I hope these people all get Lou Gehrigs Disease.

You're right!

I think the next Batman film should go smaller, Die Hard in Arkham Asylum or something.

Is that because of the who is implicated at the end?  I personally think it's a great ending.  It's rare that such a film can climax with a verbal confrontation and be satisfying.

The Three Stooges hasn't made it here yet.  No sign of it at all.

I loved TDKR.  I love the entire trilogy.  I'm not going to say they're perfect, but I had a blast with all three films.

That said, i'm with the Dude and The Duke.  Batman would work just as well with a well-thought out story and a medium budget ($60-80 million).  I'd love to see a serious return to the original comics, without bringing back of any cheese.

Annoying thing is I don't believe this is an option at the moment.

Looks like this lucky Gal is getting a lot of attention.

I still dread this remake though. Which brave Chewer is willing to take the plunge first?
