A great female friend of mine mentioned THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER the other night. We were talking about THE NOTEBOOK and how it's one of those movies "that all women love." And then she brought up RED OCTOBER saying she noticed that "it doesn't matter if you're a jock or a geek, single or married, blue or white collar... every guy loves that movie." She turned to me and asked, "How about you?" I smiled, "I have the special edition DVD, the one-sheet, the original novel and two different versions of the soundtrack." And then got high-fives from the other two guys in the room. :)
I read THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER a long time back. It was decent enough. Never had the strength to read the rest of Tom Clancy's novels though. Over the years, i've lost the interest in reading War Thrillers for some reason.
You know i forgot Heard was in the first Never Back Down. Which just goes to show how mediocre that film was.
Some footage of the cast on stage before the Paris premiere:

The EX2 Paris premiere was mad (even more than the first one which already crazy, more than THE LORD OF THE RINGS)!!! Had "reserved for cast and crew" VIP seats (their guests really) and me and my dates were right next to JCVD's parents, when we were watching the stars walking the red carpets and signing autographs, a guy who was them then told us not to comment anything bad about JC haha...
Kind of a strange request really. But whatever, I guess.
This is one of those things I think would be so cool about having this cast tour around for the premieres. Each of them speak a different language, which could always be useful for promotion.
But yeah, that looks crazy. And loud.
It is awful about Bob Hoskins. We've gotta respect that he recognises the need to slow down and spend time with his family.
Thanks for so many wonderful years of entertainment.
Quote:

Dark Shadows was the clear winner of the night, as it was hilarious and Depp's performance had me laughing at just about everything he said and did. Loved the part when he hypnotizes the kid to "Go see that Cooper woman." I loved it so much, I'm pretty sure the film will make my Top 5 of the year when I do my list.
I didn't mind this, either. It is really unfocused and I sympathised with Eva Green's witch for some reason. I have no idea why.
This is true. There's a ton of material out there that shows that some of the loose plot strands did get addressed at some point.
Things can get taken care of in subsequent episodes, but this felt like committee film-making all over.

Great stuff. Really pumped for the film when it shows up next week.
Regarding Strike back, i'll be starting from Season 'zero' and hope to join you guys watching the new season of the show hopefully by its third episode.
Same here, actually. Maybe it's from growing up but Clancy's techno-jargon got on my nerves after a while. That and his now-standard practice of "creating" novels but not actually writing them. But from THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER ('84) to THE SUM OF ALL FEARS ('91), I was a super-fan. I do so wish they'd made more "Clark" films with Willem Dafoe. He was so good in CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER.

I reconnected with a favorite flick tonight. Jake Kasdan's ZERO EFFECT (1998).
Awesome. I wish I had old VHS tapes around of me recording old random crap from the 80's; it'd be awesome to watch in 2012. And I've heard about Zero Effect from several different places; one of these days I suppose I should actually check it out.
Shame to say, I had to look up this reference, as I still don't watch that show. Once I saw who Huell was... wow, what a scary-looking dude. I don't even want to make any comments about the shape of his head as I don't want to ever see him on my front door step.
Video Store Excursions: THE RAID (Blu) <YES!!!>, HUNGER GAMES (BLU), SILENT HOUSE, THE THING (Blu), COBRA, and OVER THE TOP.
I like it, I like it. Praying there will be a video soon.
Read that Carl's Jr has a collectible EX2 cup available. Don't know if you need to buy a combo or some crap or just need to buy the drink. Apparently there's just one cup, was hoping each character would get one.
C. Thomas Howell is rolling over in his grave over this new RED DAWN trailer.
That is so cool. The fans love 'em all. Swear I heard at the beginning what sounded like "JAH! STAHLLLLOOONNNEEEE!!!!" and boy did they go crazy over Van Damme and then Arnold. This is not the movie of the summer for me. It's the movie of the year!
I may not get to see it next friday, as Vanessa has been getting tired from work when she comes home, but she did say we could go to the first showing saturday morning, so unless I can convince her to see it friday night, it's going to be a saturday morning viewing for us.
Might go see The Hunger Games tonight or A Friend At The End Of The World. Hey, she's choosing tonight.
I keep getting a "TV Movie" impression out of this for some reason.
The kids from THE GAP are here to save us!
Oh you lucky man. I'm buying that on Tuesday as soon as I'm able to.

A preview of FRANK STALLONE's hot new Expendables 2 track:

I'm most amazed that CD Baby is still around. Then again I am happy that CD Universe hasn't folded, at least not yet.
Good call. From looking at their website, Hardee's/Carl's Jr. is offering up a giant cup and they only show one angle of it so I don't know if it's even a nice design or not, and I presume you can just order a giant-ass Mello Yello and you'll be good, but they don't make that clear.
Nice to see that Frank Stallone is contributing a track, and it sounds good too. Hope it plays over the end credits.
Revisiting The Terminator right now. Still a sci-fi classic, but I still think the love scene shouldn't have been in there. I know that for once, a sex scene is integral to the plot of the film, but ah, it's just a minor complaint overall. I guess seeing the edited for tv version so many times over the years just burned it into my brain that this was just an action film without sex. Doesn't help either that T2 and even further on T3 didn't have love scenes either. Just seems unnecessary is all. Yes, I realize that I of all people is saying this, but we all say things that surprise us sometimes don't we?

A buddy and I once got so high we were listening to Frank Stallone and thought it was the Beatles. I don't know much about Frank's musical output outside of his contributions to Sly's flicks, so either he's legitimately good or I was super-blazed. That same night I watched the Sensei's Urban Justice for the first time ... a hilariously bad movie in which he talks about how rough L.A.'s streets are while he's obviously in Albuquerque, slays gang bangers like Jason Vorhees with a badge replete with unmerciless neck-breakings and Eddie Griffin essays the villain role while incessantly screaming, "Somebody hot that foo'!". What a night ...
Favorite Sly/ Menahem Golan collaboration COBRA or OVER THE TOP?
COBRA gets more thread love, but I gotta go with the pure ridiculousness of OVER THE TOP. I love it to death.
COBRA gets my vote. I'm even starting my own branch of the Axe Clanking Club.
Fat Elvis, COBRA by a...Mile...Over The Top! I didn't have to...Arm Wrestle to arrive at this conclusion.

If the love scene was left out, the world would have never heard the ultimate pick-up line "I came across time for you, Sarah." ![]()
I'll have to chime in with Cobra as well.
He could have still said the line, and they "get down" on the bed, and then just cut to the scene of Arnold on the motorcycle.
As far as the 2 Sly films, Cobra. No contest. That is miles ahead of Over The Top.
Urban Justice is still one of The Sensei's better efforts in DTV cinema. He kicks a bunch of guys in the balls, probably turning them into mush, and McDonald's makes several appearances. Probably because he decided to stop there and get about 20 Big Macs, and then shoot his fight scene. That and he says the immortal line "AHMA BE DOIN' THA FUCKIN' NOW!"
I am officially sick of Seagal. Been watching his True Justice TV Series and realized that most of his DTV stuff is so boring.
Body doubles. Fake accents. Arrogent inflated stories. The Sensei is good for an unintentional laugh now and then but i am fresh out of goodwill for him.
Death Race 3: Inferno Trailer is up!
Quite a lineup. Luke Goss. Danny Trejo, Ving Rhames, Robin Shou and Dougray Scott.
Cool looking trailer. Good to see all the folks from the second one are returning. That was one of the better DTV films of this past year. Hard to believe it came out just last year too, feels like it came out back in 2010. Does look like they still spent quite bit on it and the desert setting is like something out of The Road Warrior.

"What does it take... What does it take to change the essence of a felix?"
(I hear you, though. I'd love for him to get another big budget star vehicle at this point in his career. Or a low budget one by someone who really cared. And yet, my dream project -- THE STEVEN SEAGAL ACTION BLUES MUSICAL -- is still in the works. Someday, Stevie... Someday.)

I'm just happy they fight. Still, it would be cool if they got more time against one another. But it's gonna be strange watching all these guys squeeze for more time over the course of the movie. Maybe Adkins and Statham will have their own versus film one day.
I like to see him in THE EXPENDABLES 3. So as much Sly, Arnold and Bruce can kick the shit out of him in real life. The Sensei is sure to ruffle a few feathers on the set.
Seagal's DTV stuff used to intrigue me. But the fights are all shot the same shaky cam way. That looking back now i realise that there are better ways to spend my time. I'll watch MAXIMUM CONVICTION if i have the chance, but i am keeping my expectations very low from now on.
I am hoping that Wesley Snipes will get back to movie when he gets released next year. GALLOWSWALKER has been sitting around for ages now. I honestly like some of Snipes DTV work. The Gary Daniels fight he had in GAME OF DEATH was pretty good in my opinion.
As president of the Keanu Reeves Apreciation Society and Fan Club, I'm excited we might finally be getting a third Bill & Ted. Unexpected cool news.
An early heads up: on the 31st, it's James Caan day on TCM. Showing that day: SUBMARINE X-1 (never seen), SLITHER (a fave road movie scripted by W.D. Richter), ROLLERBALL, HIDE IN PLAIN SIGHT (his directorial debut), Altman's COUNTDOWN, and THIEF.
Weak might be a smidge harsh. Middling would be more apt. Severely middling.
You mean Swayze, right? Unless the Soul Man passed on today and I wasn't told.
Talk about middling, that looks middling. South Park already remade it better (complete with a word-for-word recital of the Genghis Khan lecture). That's sure to be absent, as will be "AVENGE ME!" as the Stanton equivalent appears to get killed mid-sentence from the looks of the trailer.
I really like Chris Hemsworth and Josh Peck and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but I'm not banking on this being worth it.
Cobra wins by a landslide. Over the Top is endearing enough, but David Mendenhall is a nightmare.
Speaking of which, loved hearing "Winner Takes It All" last season on Eastbound and Down. And anyone who saw God Bless America may be floored to hear Mendenhall plays the father of the queen bitch high schooler who Joel Murray guns down.
I got shredded at a poker game for professing my love for Cobra. One response: "At least Over the Top had nice trucks!"
Hopefully, I'll catch it Sunday or during the week, but my expectations have been in check for a while. I love my man Renner though.
At this point, it's all about next week.

Yes that is pretty amazing. That said, I do see your point.
That's an all-time classic line in this thread. From what I know he's a fine-enough musician but he's not exactly comparable to John Lennon. That sounds like the type of weed you'd find in Pineapple Express.

What a tremendous title for the article. I am being at least a little sarcastic. I guess I should be used to that sort of vapidness by now.

I remember watching that on Spike TV a few years ago. It seemed entertaining-enough but it seemed best to watch it in its unedited form, which I hope to do sometime in the future. It was during the time they had on directors to talk about unrelated things while an action movie played, and this time it was UWE BOLL. Sad to say I don't think he even said anything about Seagal.

Quite a lineup. Luke Goss. Danny Trejo, Ving Rhames, Robin Shou and Dougray Scott.
And also, Tanit Phoenix. I suppose I should see the second one eventually then Inferno and avoid the first one for the Paul Writes Shitty Anderson factor.

As I said before, I'd so be down for that.
Actually, Mike Hawk played the dad of Roxy. It was Larry Miller who was the dad of that bitchy girl Chloe. But, I had to go to IMDb to see who it was that he played, as I had zero idea that was him.
Here is a pretty great development as for the one thing I did today... I went and bought Strike Back on DVD. The place I went to was all out of the Blu-Ray; I am fine with the "lesser" format. Hopefully soon I'll experience the world of Michael Stonebridge and Damien Scott.
Pure ridiculousness? I meant the pure emotion of the finale! "Winner Takes It All" indeed.
It's being worked on. Slowly but surely.
I think at this point in his career, Seagal is more comfortable doing what he does rather than y'know, something actually worthwhile. Very doubtful that he'd take part in EX3, because his EGO is as big as his stomach. Unless he finds the inner courage to do another role a la Machete where he actually seemed to be having fun.
Revisited the Larry Cohen film, The Stuff. It's about a sentient fluid that is like yogurt and starts to take over people. So Michael Moriarty, a girl who was an ad executive for the company, and a kid take it upon themselves to stop it. Along with some help from Paul Sorvino who plays a Colonel who's practically gone mad and has his own personal army. He helps take out "The Stuffies!" It's worth a look.
Right now I decided to revisit The Hitcher, since its been a long time since I've seen my dvd of it. I have both this one, and the remake. The same remake which I found to be pretty entertaining. I know Vanessa loved it a lot and saw it several times. C. Thomas Howell is perfect as the kid, and Hauer is so creepy as Ryder. Even creepier is the fact that once he's caught in the film, they can't find anything on him. The dvd, while being anamorphic, could use a better transfer. There's some scenes that look downright shitty. Shout! Factory, get on this!
Ended up not going out tonight, which is fine by me. There's always tomorrow. You'll love Strike Back, Perfect.
The art store is live!

The main highlight (for me) was something I barely saw opening night at the crowded gallery:
....if only it weren't 500 bucks. I'd put that on a wall and fight anyone who tried to stop me.
Just got back from it. If people looking at computer screens for 90 minutes are your thing, this movie is for you!
But seriously, Renner is extremely good, but the movie around him is pretty lame. No personality, no flair, no humor... and damnit: shaky-cam. They're still using it.
The story was almost non-existent, with the movie being far more concerned in reminding us we were watch a movie with Bourne in the title. There was almost no tension after Renner leaves Alaska, which was too bad. The movie actually forgets we need a villain of some kind and eventually we get that guy with the samurai sword from Predators right at the very end. So the villain is just this last minute plot contrivance. Everything else is a trip to the Phillipines.
Speaking of which, why is it that so many American blockbusters feel the need to throw chase scenes in the middle of third world countries these days?
I thought THE BOURNE LEGACY was almost like a Videogame tie in. Just a pointless side mission with almost nothing going forward with the plot.
And the first 40 mins was so boring. Hard to imagine i am saying this about a Bourne film. The shaky cam isn't as bad as Supremacy. But the action stuff seems mostly like a copy of the earlier films.
Not a bad film per see. But there's no urgent need to check this out.

Death Race 3: Inferno Trailer is up!
Quite a lineup. Luke Goss. Danny Trejo, Ving Rhames, Robin Shou and Dougray Scott.
I'm definitely gonna have to check this one out. The DTV one was pretty good, Lauren Cohan and Tanit Phoenix were smoking hot, and Sean Bean got killed as usual. Goss was great as usual. Hopefully, he'll be able to reunite with Del Toro if HB III ever happens.
This looks so amazing.
do you think its possible we get an early trailer for this before EX2? It seems like a smart marketing move
I don't think we'll get a TOMB trailer this quick (teaser maybe?). My hope is we will get one for THE LAST STAND since that's scheduled to come first in January. It'll be absurd if there's no trailer for that released next week.
"Showed her my Thailand." I don't know if EX2 will lead to bigger and better things for the man but thank God he's in this one. He's such a treasure.
I am pretty sure I will. I was also thinking of possibly going out last night but I stayed in instead. What I'll be doing tonight... I decided to go back to that sports bar in Orlando which offers up the BACARDI BUCKET and I'll have one of those while watching the latest UFC pay per view. It'll be a small-time one from Denver but I still hope it's at least a fun show. And of course, I'm going to be drinking out of a plastic bucket... it should be a grand night.
That is indeed pretty glorious.
What an article. "So I showed her my Thailand" SO sounds like a comment me or someone else in this thread would have made. At least he didn't go with the obvious Bangkok joke.
Welcome to this thread, BrickBurgundy. Ha at your Sean Bean comment, but it is usually his fate in films.
I was actually just like, "Well, what happened?" Because pretty much nothing happened in that movie. Agreed.
There's maybe like 2 cool parts in the whole thing, and in 2 hours and 15 minutes that's not gonna cut it. Liked Renner, found him to be less mopey than Damon but he has nothing to play off of. The big chase through Manilla was awfully stale. It's so drawn out and the big payoff at the end looked clunky as hell.
The long and mediocre Legacy of BOURNE!
I agree with what's been posted in here. Renner is fine, but he doesn't have much to do. He wants his CHEMS because he's running low. That's the character. He's supposed to be superhuman, but he does all of the same shit Bourne did. He actually does less than Bourne because this movie is pretty light on action. And when there is action, it's all a bunch quick-cut stuff you've seen before.
Then you get a crappy non-ending and they cue the Bourne end-credits song.
