Following up Sam Fuller with one of my true guilty pleasures/ bad movies I love, TWISTER. Love it for the spectacle and Bill Paxton's rare star turn. Anyone else kind of like it?

When I saw Twister on the big screen with my family back in '95 I remember enjoying it well-enough. I've never seen it in full since then; I know, it's another one of the 10,000 films I need to watch sometime in the future. Who knows what I'll think of it now. I'm sure I'll laugh that Philip Seymour Hoffman has an important co-starring role.

Unless I can find an appropriate shirt at some store to buy and wear at the midnight premiere, I plan on wearing a Rocky shirt. It's black,  with Balboa on the front and it simply says "American Hero". I can't find an image of it online; it turns out, though, there are many dope shirts from that franchise out and about.

Oh yeah, I love TWISTER.  Some parts are just ridiculous but on the whole it's a blast of summer movie entertainment.

I also love ELECTION (2005) and ELECTION 2 (2006, released in the USA as TRIAD ELECTION) as I'm a huge, huge fan of Johnnie To's crime pictures.  If you dug it, I'd also recommend the very Walter Hill-like A HERO NEVER DIES, the one-two punch of THE MISSION and EXILED, RUNNING OUT OF TIME, P.T.U, THROWDOWN (his tribute to Kurosawa's first film, SANSHIRO SUGATA) BREAKING NEWS, TRIANGLE, MAD DETECTIVE, SPARROW, VENGEANCE and the more recent light offering LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE.

WHITE DOG is great and really pushes some limits.  I think my favorite Fullers, though, are THE STEEL HELMET and PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET.

Didn't watch much this weekend but did grab the Humphrey Bogart film DEAD END from Amazon.  Liked it a lot.  Set in the late 1930's on New York's east side, it tells the story of a dead end street overlooking the East River where the rich are moving in and are at odds with those in the surrounding tenement slums.  You get tough talking street kids, love triangles, civil class wars... and a Wanted Killer (Bogart) returning home to look up some friends and family.  Notable for being based on a well known Broadway play, some striking set design, the first appearance of The Dead End Kids (the young troupe who later split up into The East Side Kids and the Bowery Boys and also appeared in CRIME SCHOOL and ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES) and some typically great work from Bogart.  Highly recommended to those who like movies with tough-guy teens ("Aww, geddoudda here, ya' lousy squealaaa!"), NYC in the old days, films that feel like stage plays and, of course, noir and Bogey fans.

I like the scientific earnestness of the leads, I like Paxton, and the supporting cast is on the whole pretty good. The final face off with the F5 is terrifying and extremely well executed. The effects continue to impress based if nothing else on the level of artistic detail and the way things were shot and framed. That storm looks like the end of the world, and the sound design backs it up.

I told my mother-in-law how stoked I am to see The Expendables 2 this weekend while a commercial for the flick was playing on TV. Her response was, "Why do you want to watch all those has-beens?" Were it not unintentionally funny, Mike Honcho might have had to slap a "bitch."

What up, fellas?  Been busy lately, haven't had a lot of time to post.

So my girlfriend is telling me the other day that she has received free movie tickets, for saving box tops or some such shit.  I'm telling her this has been a weak sauce summer, and I can't think of anything coming out that looks worth the time...

Then I remember it's August 10th, and oh yeah, there's this little sequel coming out in a week, and fuck yeah, summer is (hopefully) saved.

Haven't seen much of anything lately.  Showed the girl ROBOCOP, which somehow she had never seen.  Always love an excuse to pull that one out.

I remember Twister being THE movie of the summer, but I didn't see it until it hit the dollar movies, coincidentally on a day when it was raining outside, and as my Mother said "It was perfect weather for seeing the film." I still like the film a lot and have the Blu-ray. It's one of those films I never got on vhs or dvd.

Only Samuel Fuller films I've seen are The Steel Helmet, which my Dax owns on tape, and The Big Red One which I got on dvd at Big Lots several years back.

Watching Return Of The Living Dead Part II right now before I head to bed. still a pretty good sequel, and it's funny how they got James Karen and Thom Matthews again. Dana Ashbrook is a pretty good lead. Too bad he never really got a lot of lead roles.

Just heard about Mel Stuart of WILLY WONKA / WATTSTAX fame passing away. Seriosly, WILLY WONKA  was a big one for me as a kid, as i'm sure it was for some of you (still my fave Wilder). Here's a trailer for one from his filmography I'm curious about:

Fave Sam Fuller is probably still PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET, which I see is mentioned above.

Never seen WHITE DOG, always been curious about that one.

Here in the Cities there's a Sam Fuller series going on at one of the local theaters, This week it's a House of Bamboo/Forty Guns double feature. Definitely gonna have to check that one out. Saw House of Bamboo probably 10 years ago but don't remember anything about it really.

Just watched Vice Squad for the first time tonight. Awesome movie, I love sleazy late 70's early 80's LA.

I love PICKUP. A great Noir. But you got to see WHITE DOG, Keith. The ending destroys me. One of the best films about racism I've ever seen.

I have his personal fave PARK ROW DVR'd, but haven't gotten to it.

Eko, you should check out SHOCK CORRIDOR. It's almost a Horror movie. It's audacious, confident, savage and disturbing. One of his pulp masterpieces.

I saw Shock Corridor during the Barnes And Noble sale and ALMOST picked it up. Guess I'll have to during the November sale.

Speaking of The Bowery Boys/The East Side Kids, I've got there in my revisiting pile, their film Ghosts On The Loose which also features Bela Lugosi. It was the first one of theirs that I ever saw when my Dad got it on vhs, and I picked up the dvd for 5 bucks several years back. It's pretty hilarious and worth a look.

That is indeed well said. I certainly remember it being a LOUD movie when it was at the cineplex. I am sure it will still sound great once I get it for rental or even purchase it for a few bucks.

Welcome back. As you are referring to your lady I won't make any comments about what you just said... except that while watching Robocop or The Expendables 2, many of us will be excited to the point that we want to pull it out!

Oh yeah that is true, he passed away a few days ago. As creepy as it is at times, I still dig Willy Wonka. And Wattstax is great as not only a documentary that covers a huge concert featuring many great soul artists, but also as a time capsule as various locals are interviewed about such things as race relations and the future for African-Americans. And, there's some great monologues from Richard Pryor.

Just watched Vice Squad for the first time tonight. Awesome movie, I love sleazy late 70's early 80's LA.

Both of those Fuller films have tremendous titles. I sad to say haven't seen too many of his movies yet.

Yes to Vice Squad. That's a popular film in this thread, for good reason. It's sleazy greatness and Wings Hauser delivers a classic performance as Ramrod.

As for what I just finished watching tonight in full, it was D.C. Cab. As I explained a few weeks ago, out of all movies that was one of the first I remember seeing at least a part of on TV, when I was a toddler. Imagining that film edited for TV... lol. I heard a detailed review for it earlier in the year so I knew a lot of what was going to happen, but it was still wildly entertaining. What a cast, what an awesome 80's score from the great Moroder, and who cares if there isn't too much of a plot if it's so hilarious so often, racism aside. It's loud and it's crazy and I dug it.

From what I heard, Busey was so drugged out at the time, he has zero memory of working on that film. Judging by his performance, how he acted, and all the strange shit he said, I totally believe it. Not wanting to work on Elvis's birthday? Him saying that cops shoot people with bullets covered with PCP? Randomly stealing a statue while getting his fare from a topless restaurant? Yep, he was high as a kite throughout the film.

Of course, I do have to remark that Jill Schoelen looked pretty hot in the small role she had, and there were plenty of bare boobies in the film.

God, I love Vice Squad.

Me too, Keith F.

One more thing from D.C. Cab I should mention... there are some tremendous outfits. I am not sure which one is the best, the green silk Emerald Cab jackets, the bright yellow D.C. Cab jackets, or Busey's Pepsi-Cola jean jacket. All are works of art.

Oh, I so love D.C. CAB.  Also caught up with two 80's flicks...

James Foley's RECKLESS and Albert Magnoli's AMERICAN ANTHEM; two similar stories of young men from broken families and young women of privilege who find love and self worth with one another.  ANTHEM is by far the more glossy and "surface" of the two, with Olympic gymnast Mitch Gaylord and the gorgeous Janet Jones doing what they can alongside the music video lighting and pounding soundtrack.  The gymnastics are impressive, though, and in the end it's not perfect but it sort of works despite the extra cheese.  RECKLESS, the deeper more down to earth of the two, fares slightly better.  The Steel Mill town location looms over the story providing suitable oppression for Aidan Quinn and Daryl Hannah... and their unsure teen romance gives the film a reality that most stories like this lack -- at least until the abrupt and fakey Hollywood ending comes along.  Adam Baldwin is the quarterback in the way and also present are Cliff DeYoung, Jennifer Grey and Dan Hedaya.  Decent, and feels very much like preparation for the better work Foley would go on to do with AT CLOSE RANGE.  Okay flicks for those intrigued.  But being in 80's mood wouldn't hurt.

I bought the Warner Archive disc of RECKLESS. I'm a fan.

Watched the doc that came with the Criterion of WHITE DOG. The producers really thought they were getting a CUJO-like exploitation film (JAWS with paws they were hoping), and thus were totally at a loss over what to do with the film Sam delivered, a film that was stylish and dealt with the subject matter artistically. And then ironically, this film that was anti-racism was labeled a racist work of art. It took 10 years for the critical reappraisal.

One final thing, a mention must be made of Paul Winfield's performance. He's a trainer trying to break the dog of its ingrained hatred/racism, and the performance is the heart of the movie. If he's not brilliant, the film doesn't work, and he is. SPOILER: The look on his face when he has to kill the dog he's tried teaching for months; a dog he thought cured, but has gone insane breaks my heart each and every time.

Keith F, Welcome back!  I think this has been a...SUPER Summer!  The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Amazing Spider-Man are the only...3 films I saw on the big screen.  The Expendables 2, are of course...Back For War, and  they should win the box office battle this weekend.  Have you seen any clips or tv spots for...Dredd?  That looks...MEGA Awesome!  Mega City 1's Top Cop...Dredd  will...Judge Resident Evil Retrubution unworthy of anything less then...10 in the pen!  Dredd might even have to place the...Lions in a...GATEd community for the crime of not releasing his latest film during the...Bummer of a Summer, many are feeling!

New TRANSPORTER TV Series Trailer!

Looks like they'll be some Jason Statham type fights in this.

If you think about it, there are maybe 1 or 2 possibilities, but I'd avoid most EXPENDABLES 2 reviews because a lot of them just spoil the EXPENDABLE DEATH without a spoiler warning.

lol you keep dreamin that Clint dream, Avi.

Definitely need Nic to play the villain, though.

“We’ve approached Clint Eastwood to be one of the guys, we’ve got a character in mind for him. We’re talking to Harrison Ford. [And we want] Wesley Snipes when he comes back from prison. I’ll give you one more name, we’ve got Nicolas Cage to play [one of the characters].”

“And we’re going to bring Mickey Rourke back, if he won’t be too crazy. I like Mickey. And of course, all the existing stars [will return]”

If it means Clint gets a couple weeks away from his family, he just might sign on.

This isn't an action film per se, but go see BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD. Best film I've seen since MOONRISE.

All of that sounds wonderful.

Some of us keep hoping that they'll stick some of the B team into the Expendables lineup, but it truly makes more sense to use the Van Damme and Gary Daniels model and throw some awesome recognizable DTV faces into a villain lineup for part 3.  Clint wouldn't do this in a million years.  I will never say never to Harrison Ford, after bullshit like Crystal Skull.

I'm starting an internet petition to get Randy Couture banned from all movie making.

I've been calling for Randy to be killed off and replaced with Michael Jai White since the first EXPENDABLES footage was released. He has no personality and his "slamming people against walls" fighting style is boring.

Nothing more to add about D.C. Cab or The Specialist (worst sex scene ever) or Vice Squad. They're all great.

I'm taking all of this with a grain of salt as Cage nor Travolta panned out on the new one, yet Chuck Norris did.

Meanwhile, critics are loving to shit and/or acknowledge The Expendables 2 is shit on Rotten Tomatoes.

They're saying the cast isn't focused.

They're saying it's too corny.

They're saying that it's a disappointment because of its lack of focus.

And then there's this:

In the havoc department, meanwhile, the jacked-up budget allows for crashing planes, leaping jet skis, tanks and a Virtua Cop bodycount. Everything you need for a fist-pumping Friday night, right? Well, no...lurches between genre-lampooning humour and earnest drama...like being forced to attend a Planet Hollywood boardroom meeting after a great quarter. - Empire

Well, here's all I have to say about that: SCREW YOU GUYS BECAUSE THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO RULE.

Clint teaming up with Sly and Arnold would be just about the coolest thing ever! My inner 12 year old is totally geeking out. Hope Clint doesn't hold a grudge about not being included in the Planet Hollywood venture back in the day ha.

I like this gif, along with the link to the .gif to the Van Damme one that didn't show up in the reply for some reason. I'll never not laugh at that dancing scene in Kickboxer and I still say all of his movies should have a dancing scene just like that.

I don't know about it, but I at least did laugh when I saw that the main page article on that trailer described the new show as a "diarrhea grenade". That's a colorful phrase.

I've been a big fan of MMA for the past few years and at least have sort of followed it for longer than that. A lot of those fans dig old Randy, and I never quite understood why. Sure, it was incredible he fought at a high level when he was in his mid 40's, but of his fights I've seen most of them weren't all that exciting and plus in real life he sounds like kind of a lout, being married and divorced three times and the last wife he allegedly met at a strip club. I wouldn't be too sad either if his character was off'ed.

So want the Bill & Ted midlife crisis movie.

From BADASS:

Here's Keanu explaining it to GQ:

"One of the plot points is that these two people have been crushed by the responsibility of having to write the greatest song ever written and to change the world. And they haven't done it. So everybody is kind of like: "Where is the song?" The guys have just drifted off into esoterica and lost their rock. And we go on this expedition, go into the future to find out if we wrote the song, and one future "us" refuses to tell us, and another future "us" blames us for their lives because we didn't write the song, so they're living this terrible life. In one version we're in jail; in another we're at some kind of highway motel and they hate us."

Brilliant.

From the extremly positive Den of Geek review of EX2:

"It’s an inspired choice to make Gunnar a more comedic foil, with Dolph Lundgren eating up his chances to play for laughs – his seduction face has to be seen to be believed, though it’s an image that no amount of mental scrubbing can remove."

Calm down, Molt!

SIMON SEZ is a great bad movie that begs for the MST3K or Rifftrax treatment.  Emma Sjoberg (the tall uber-hot blonde from the French TAXI films) co-stars and her sexy asskicking is easily the most interesting aspect of the flick.  Dane Cook is an even bigger embarrassment than usual... Between this and Michelle Yeoh's THE TOUCH he was briefly Hong Kong's go-to guy for Idiot American character roles.  (I mean, really, what kind of field agent does raptor impressions in the middle of an investigation?)   And there's this one evil henchman character that always made me laugh out loud that my friends and I referred to simply as "SCREAMING GUY" (you'll see, he's like Al Leong's coked-up cousin).  To tell you the truth, Rodman was the least of this flick's troubles.

But it is kind of fun, in a grab a beer and make fun of the movie sort of way.

Replace the word "song" with the word "script" and it's a good description of myself and many of my friends.  I really need to shit or get off the pot.

Moltisanti, That trailer was...Awesome!  I do have a few questions.  Is this Scott Adkins first Universal Soldier Film?  I only saw the original film once.  I guess Jean Claude will be causing much...VAN DAMMEage as the villain of the piece!  I am glad to hear this is hitting theaters.  I...Reckon, NYC and LA are likely theatrical landings for the new Universal Soldier film.

Part of the time it's him. A double is there as well, likely the reason he's in the make-up is so the double isn't as obvious as it was in REGENERATION.
