County or Getty?

I'd post this in the L.A. section but people rarely visit that forum and this is more about the actual art than the location.

I need to take my friend to an art museum but the last time I went to one I was in grade school.

It's between either the L.A. County Art Museum or the Getty Center.

If it were up to me it'd be Natural History museum all the way, even though the bird section scares the fuck out of me.

But have any of you recently visited one or maybe both. Which one would be the better choice to go to first?

The Getty is a great overall experience. If you're specifically looking for a great art collection, I'm not sure it's the best, but the view from the hill top, the architecture, the rose garden, all that stuff, is great. And I really like the collection of illuminated manuscripts (if they still have that). And they have a big painting by the guy that They Might Be Giants do a song about (this sentence probably demonstrates my knowledge of art pretty well).

I've never been to the county museum, so I can't really comment on that. I believe MOCA and HAMMER museums are currently doing a joint exhibition of comic book art. If you're looking for a great collection of classic art, the Norton Simon in Pasadena has what might be the best collection in town. I've also heard that the Huntington Gallery in Pasadena has a great collection.
