According to Benson's World, who have it for a decent pre-order price, TARANTULA is coming out the same day.

With such a naff title, it probably sucks. I mean, THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN? Come on...

I really hope that's sarcasm.

I knew Jamiepoole would return some day...

I must take this opportunity to heartily recommend y'all read "The Shrinking Man" by Richard Matheson, the novel on which the film is based. Despite the protagonist's constant whining about his plight (although understandable, suck it up dude) it's a fantastic story. It details his encounter with the cloud, his suddenly shrinking frame, and how he responds to it (not well) interspersed with his final days trapped in his basement, 1 inch tall, trying to find food to survive while avoiding the black widow spider that also lives there. I have to admit, it was much more gripping and enjoyable than I had expected. A very pleasant surprise (though I should have expected as much from Matheson), and I endorse it unreservedly.

Agreed, the novel is excellent. And I'm very excited to finally see this released. Like The Day the Earth Stood Still was until its release, this is a hole in my collection.

Thanks for displaying your ignorance.
"Man" is not only one of the best Sci fi films of the fifties., but one of the best of all time, and any serious student of the genre needs to buy this DVD.
The duel between the hero and the spider is great, and an obvious influence on the Shelob sequence in ROTK.

Isn't.

You guys must not have been around during the Jamiepoole days.

As someone who doesn't normally like 1950s Science Fiction movies (except for classics like The Day the Earth Stood Still), I will have to agree that The Incredible Shrinking Man is, in fact, one of the BEST science-fiction movies of the 1950s or any decade. Another of my favorites... The 27th Day with Gene Barry. Both are FANTASTIC movies.

From what I can make out from the vestiges of his posts, jamiepoole appeared to be quite a tool.

Come on my friend......listen to the TITLE of those movies. Incredible Shrinking Man? It even sounds
like cheap, mouldy ass.

UPDATE FOR REGION 1:

Best Buy has an exclusive set coming out later this month that includes Tarantula, The Mole People, The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Monolith Monsters, and Monster on Campus.

These films won't be getting the attention they deserve with this set (the cover alone looks like absolute ass), but for $19.99 I think I'll check it out.

Haven't seen this since I was 8 or 9, but it royally freaked me out!

Pity it's Region 1, though...

Damn right. Tarantula and Them! make the perfect double-feature. Shrinking Man is fried gold too.

I picked up the Best Buy exclusive Sci-Fi Collection yesterday (I really hate the idea of exclusive shit, by the way), and have watched one of the discs thus far.

It's actually not a bad little set, I must say. My hatred of the cover art has diminished as I can't think of a much better way to do it, and also because the interior art is quite striking. It uses a combination of the "helpless screaming woman" motif and the original film posters. There seems to be some real love put into the design when you see it all out of the slipcase, but it still looks a bit bland.

Of what I've watched, the films look and sound pretty good. Now I just need to figure out where to put it in my alphabetized DVD Room.

M for miscellaneous? C for collection? V for various?

I can't be arsed to shelve stuff according to some arbitrary classification system, so as much as it pains me I'll likely put it under 'S' for the collection's title (or re-burn them onto a disc apiece and whip up some tasty cover art, if I ever want to get that involved).

Made my day! I'm off to Best Buy now and it will sit at the front of the monster section of my dvd's along with the other creature compilations. Make no mistake about it... it will be mine!
