SW Question: Is this worth anything?

Thread Starter
I forgot I had this, and as my desire to hoard Star Wars merchandise is now lower than my desire to hoard Basket Case merchandise, I may very well toss it on Ebay if it'll bring in some decent coin.

It's a 4 CD compilation of "The Original Soundtrack Anthology". One CD for each movie - ROTJ is a "previously unavailable expanded score" - and there's a bonus disc of "outtakes and unreleased music from all three films".

It's clearly a prestige bit of merchandise, the box is big and beefy, and there's a 64 page booklet inside. The discs have black covers, with the movie title in black gloss, while the CDs themselves have what looks like McQuarrie production artwork on them.

The copyright info on the back dates it as 1993, and it seems to be an American release.

Second-hand prices on Amazon range from $30 to $499, so I have no idea if this is a genuine rarity or just more clutter.

I'd be interested to know too. I have this packed away in my attic.

I have this as well. It was probably worth a bit more before the Special Edition scores came out, since there's a ton of material in this set that had never been released before but ended up on the Special Edition discs. So from a music afficianado standpoint, why plunk down big bucks for this set when the same music is available at a more reasonable price?

On the other hand, there's no telling what a hardcore SW collector would plunk down for that. Like they say, a collectible is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Must not be too rare. I have that set as well. Looking at Ebay, I saw quite a few floating around.
I bet you could convince someone else that it was worth a lot that's never seen the set before.

I have it in a box somewhere too.
This sparks my interest because I've been looking for a CD that had the original ending score to Return of the Jedi, especially one without Jedi Rock.

You have a Hastings near you, g-dude? They'll probably still have a copy or two of this. I think mine still does. I have this and think it's a pretty nice set.
I'm still in search for the Darth Maul lightsaber that shocked little kids and got recalled.
I'll buy any Belial merch you're hoarding.
Yup I've checked my local Hastings. All that they have is the Yub Nub-less Special Edition soundtrack. Ewoks might not have been the best idea ever, but at least they knew how to end a saga on a triumphant note, rather than the Rainforest Cafe mood music that ended out the Special Edition.

I have that, although I did install the supposed shock supressor. Should be pretty easy to remove. It's just a little plastic spacer.

I guess it depends on how much "Lapti Nek" and (as g-dude pointed out) Yub-Nub are worth to you, since neither one appears in the later Special Edition releases.

Funny, I used to hate "Lapti Nek" but in the wake of the absolutely hideous "Jedi Rocks," I think it's a brilliant tune, relatively speaking. Then again, I'm not even sure why JEDI needed a musical number at all. More appropriate for a gangster's lair such as Jabba's would be a music cue entitled "Princess Leia's Gangbang."

Is the "Jedi Rocks" really as bad as people say? I´ve got the Return of the Jedi dvd but i´ve never watched it.
Yes, it's stunningly bad, although as LC says, the idea of a musical number in Jabba's palace is completely misguided. Although I'll vouch for the SE end music over Yub Nub any day.

As for the set, I remember it went for about £50 new, and I've seen them around in various places from £30 to £100. I don't have it, unfortunately, but it sounds a spiffy item.

Yeah, the musical number makes it feel more like "Jabba's Dinner Theatre and Space Pirate Adventure" instead of the slum for whores and murderers that it is.

Although Sy Snootles is pretty much naked, so if poorly-rendered CG blobs with chicken legs and eyestalks is your thing, Jabba's got your number.

It's about as appropriate as having The Village People sing "In The Navy" on the bridge of Red October as Connery silently calculates when to make the next turn in the deep sea trench. Even worse than the new song are the lame CG aliens added and the sudden transformation of Boba Fett from mysterious bounty hunter to intergalactic ladies man.

Same here. I've never understood why some people wholesale dismiss the new Victory Celebration cue as some kind of New Age whimper. I find it to be a beautfiul, bittersweet cue that better sums up the whole "we've finally won but at great cost" vibe in play at the end of JEDI. The final shot would probably work better if Billy Dee Williams wasn't clapping absently, seemingly wondering where the craft service table is.

I have this set as well, but i'm just going to hold on to it....i've had so much fun with it in the past I don't wanna give it up.
Sorry Dan, doesn't look like it worth all that much. At least not much more than you paid for it. I also have that CD set.

However I'm also going through all my old stuff and will begin selling them on EBay soon. I'm still figuring everything out (never done it before) and I'm currently photographing my stuff (like attached).

From what I've seen though, this kind of stuff just doesn't bring in the bucks anyway. There's so much of it. Why buy used when the person below you has it in the box and starts selling at $.99?!

Well, I've checked EBay for a number of the things I have, and I'm not excited about what some of them are selling for. Although most of my stuff isn't in 'mint' condition - even the lobot figure, I'm sure as hell not selling it for $.99. I would hope to get between $15 and $20. Although I may purchase a price guide or at least look at one to be sure I'm not selling myself short.

Two questions... does anyone know where to buy this CD set in the UK - preferably online? - i saw it about 10 years ago, never bought it and can't find it now.

Also, does anyone know how to register for the talkbacks on Aintitcool? their register page is constantly bust...

It's selling from Suffolk.

Answer #2:
No.

Yeah, I have the set too, and I'm keeping it. I did consider putting it on eBay, but it has some alternate versions of certain tracks, and some separated cues that have been cut together in the special editions. It certainly wouldn't be the only score albums I have multiple versions of.

Personally, I'd just as soon take a hammer to both Lapti Nek AND Jedi Rocks as listen to either one again. Fortunately, in this age of ripping the CD and putting it on the shelf, I don't have to include them in the album anymore. And I wholeheartedly agree with the support for the special edition Jedi's end music. I think it's a beautiful piece that sends the whole series out on a high note, whereas "Yub Nub" concluded everything on the cutesy tone that ruined Jedi for me.

While I too like the new ending music, I just wish it had been something more thematically related to the rest of the scores. A version of the Force theme or Luke's theme, done in a similar style, would have really sold it for me.

I wouldn't disagree with that. It might have felt like more of a wrap-up if they had done that. On the other hand, there's no saying it won't still happen, is there? These movies will be finished when Lucas lies cold in his grave.

True, it could still happen.

I just think of how satisfying the musical ending of ROTS was, with the Leia and Luke themes being used as they were, it would be nice to see the OT end with that same kind of resonance.
