Friggin' X-Files...

I'm sure some folks out there know already, but for those who don't know, and for those who still care, the X-Files sets seem to be getting re-released at a nice lower price point, which is great for people who never picked them up in the first place, but which is bad for people like me who did because DANG were they expensive! Even back then I got good deals on them, but they were still pricey. TV on dvd is much more reasonable these days (if you're not an HBO show of course) and Fox is pricing the X-Files so people can actually get them and not feel like they've been mugged. Case in point, I saw the first season for about $35 in this week's Best Buy ad.

I saw the first season for $15 last week.

It's ridiculous to concern yourself with paying too much long ago. Are you pissed that the car you're driving would now cost 10% of what it once did?

It really doesn't bother me at all. Price drops are an inevitability with lots of stuff. I actually get a kick out of seeing when things go down in price, even if it's sometihng I already have, because then I can look at it and say "hey, that's a pretty good deal right there". I didn't start the thread to complain, I started it more as a heads up for anyone who's interested.

...$15..? Hey, that's a pretty good deal right there.

Ha!

I feel the sets were overpriced for the time, but there really wasn't much of a scale to compare these packed sets to at the time. I gladly shelled out 100+ bucks to get the first few seasons on DVD.

I'm thinking about picking these up. I've always avoided them due to the hefty price tag, but this is a nice incentive to start a collection. Plus I really want the last few seasons, since I'm the only person who loved all the Robert Patrick goodness.

Not the only one.

I felt the show got way way better after Robert Patrick joined up. At that point it had been bled of any sort of freshness or ability to keep my interest for about two seasons. The adds to the cast (Gish, Patrick) really almost brought me back to the show.

Picking up the first three seasons tomorrow. Been looking forward to the price drop since it was announced a few months ago. I've already got the expensive as hell season 2 as a gift when it first came out. But with the deal at Best Buy I can buy all three for about $75, which is great considering it'd be $70 if I bought 1 and 3 seperately.

It'll be nice to see some X-Files on a regular basis. TNT and Scifi show it at the most random times (usually after midnight) so I might catch a random episode every now and then.

The X-Files is a problematic purchase for me, for the same reason as The Simpsons. For a while, both were among the best shows on television, perhaps in its history. But some of the seasons just plain blow. So do I try to figure out which sets contains my favorites, and have an incomplete collection, or do I bite the bullet and buy sets that contain material I hate?

Such are the conundrums of which modern life is made.

I have the first and second series, the only ones I feel the need to own. I remember liking the third series when it was on, but I borrowed the dvd from a friend not long ago and just couldn't get into it.

I think X-Files was a product of its time, and it seems to have dated now. The idea of a government smart enough to maintain so many cover-ups seems so quaint now.

This is great news. I had seasons 2,3,4, and 6 but had to sell them about a year ago. Now I can start fresh and slowly buy up the whole series.

Season 8 and 9 are the best. Don't even argue with me.

There's no arguing with someone who would say that. I don't argue with the schizophrenic on the corner downtown who says that Jesus is going to fucking kill me, for the same reason.

Odd episodes aside, I hate the later seasons. The early monster-of-the-week shows were always more entertaining than the duller-than-dull government conspiracy crap it descended into. 'Oh look, aliens' 'Oh no, the government covered it up' 'Oh look, more aliens' 'Oh no, they did it again' 'Mulder, what happened with your sister?' 'WHO CARES?'

I only own seasons 5 and 6, which I originally purchased because they are the bread seasons for the meat that was the movie (yeah that's a really shitty X-files/sandwich analogy)

I always wanted the original seasons (1-7ish), so hopefully they price drop 4-7 soon and then they can charge millions for seasons 8 and 9 and it won't bother me in the least!

I've been hoping to pick these up at some point. Finally, I saw an ad for the first season for $34 at Target and I grabbed one yesterday. Season 2 was also available for $39 but I'm holding off a bit. Hopefully there will be more promotions like this in the future.

I always thought the original sticker prices of around $90 was way too expensive and have been waiting for them to come down since. You can find them on EBay typically less than the $90, though.

I was wandering around Target last night and I saw the Season 1 set. They re-did the packaging along with lowering the prices. The original sets were thicker fold out sets, the new ones are packaged more like the Family Guy sets with 3 slim dvd cased in a cardboard sleeve, with I'm assuming 2 discs in each case. I like the older sets better with the quotes and art scattered about, but the prices are great now.

so does that mean if I buy the new ones they aren't going to match up with the seasons 5&6 I bought already?

that kind of sucks

You know...I didn't even notice that.

I don't know about anyone else but I refused to buy those other sets they had - Abduction, Super Soldiers and Colonization. Not a bad idea I guess for those who may be looking for those specific episodes, but I find more joy in the single-story, one-hour episodes. Plus any die hard fan of the series would be getting the entire series anyway.

Slimmed down versions of seasons 4, 5 and 6 come out March 28th.
Does this mean there will be one big Season 1-9 set in the future that won't cost eight hundred dollars?

I don't know anytihng about a full season 1-9 set, but I guess it would be a 'possibility'...

I do know that the new sets also omit an extras disc that each set usually came with, which featured tv spots and other extras. And any episodes that may have been carried over onto the extras disc have been moved up to the last disc in the new sets.
