Holy shite!

Full article at The Digital Bits

14 disc SUPERMAN box set - including "The Donner Cut"

John Wayne/John Ford box - Two-disc of THE SEARCHERS as well as STAGECOACH and others

Kubrick SEs: CLOCKWORK ORANGE, 2001, THE SHINING and EYES WIDE SHUT

COOL HAND LUKE SE in 2007... along with the latest news in this ongoing saga:

Quote:
Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982) is currently on track for release as a multi-disc special edition in time for its 25th anniversary in 2007. The release is far from certain (as usual, there's a lot more that I can't post about this title yet - think of the old saying, "Loose lips sink ships"), but Warner says that work is proceeding, most of the key players are involved and things are "looking good" for release next year. We'll see.
Please god, let this work out.

14 discs? That's astonishingly excessive.
Seriously. What, like 3 discs of SUPERMAN IV: QUEST FOR PEACE extras? "Original documentaries including 'Okay, This One Wasn't So Good' and 'A Giant Net? What the Fuck?'"

But the others are bitchingly great.
Unless they're including some old serials? But even then - I don't want that.
Please let that Blade Runner SE happen. Fuck man i've been waiting forever it seems.
Unless the serials are public domain, I don't think Warners owns the rights.

Maybe they're going the ALIEN way, with new cuts for each film. Unless they go the same way Fox is with that PLANET OF THE APES set, and including the entire animated series and maybe the Fleischer shorts.

The Donner Cut will only be available on DVD in the Ultimate Collector's Edition box set, although it will also be released in HD-DVD (and likely Blu-ray Disc if that format is available).
Well, that's a big load of horseshit. I hope they plan on releasing all the films separately a couple months after the needlessly huge box is released.
Some great news here, but the Donner cut of SUPERMAN II only being available in the mega-box sucks my left one. I've gotta put up with Jon Cryer and Nuclear Man? Fuck that.
My puzzlement over what the fuck they're gonna fill 14 discs with is overwhelmed by my joy at getting Kubrick SEs at last.

No. It's astonishingly ridiculous. And bullshit-sounding by the way, even if it's printed in the Digital Bits.

Seriously, a casual fan can get the James Bond 20 flicks box set, the Batman or Alien 8 discs Quadrilogy, but Superman?

No. Way.

It's not bullshit.

Rent it.
P.S. A Blade Runner SE would be swell. I expect to see Halley's Comet again first, though.
There's all kinds of great news in that article. My personal fave is finally getting Gary Cooper's Best Actor turn in Howard Hawks's Sergeant York, a great WWI film.

14 discs of Superman? Yeah, that's a shitload. 2 discs for each brings them to 8, plus maybe 2 discs for "The Donner Cut" gets to 10. That leaves 4 discs, and I'd be surprised if they included the animated series, or even the Fleischer shorts which are out and would hardly take up even 1 disc. "Supergirl" maybe? "Superboy" TV show? The old serial? I'm intrigued.
I can’t explain what will make up all 14 discs. But I assume SUPERMAN 3 with scary-ass robot lady, and SUPERMAN 3 without scary-ass robot lady will take up 2 of those slots.
Fuck Superman. I'm more psyched for these...

Hopefully his other Warner films will get treatment, too.

Blade Runner... let's hope.

I heard that SUPERGIRL was being SE'd for release at the same time as the others, so I'd imagine that's a lock. I'm just wondering about the SRP. Seeing how the APES box is coming in at about $180, I should think it'd have to be a bit under that for much more than the hardcore or stupidly rich to buy it, although I imagine a fair bit has to go towards the Sideshow bust.

I seem to remember the original announcement mentioning that they would be replacing all the current discs with new SEs, eventually.

Nice. Too bad I'd have to repurchase everything, but dem's the breaks.
IGN settles it.

Supergirl and the Superman Returns SE will be included. So, now only two discs are a mystery.

I wonder what the aspect ratios will be on these. 2001 will obviously be 2.35, but Warner Bros. swore up and down when they re-released the boxed set that 1.33 (or 1.66 for The Shining, I believe) were Kubrick's preferred aspect ratios for all the other films.

I'm guessing the same. I hear they have the Kubrick estate's blessing to produce extras, but I doubt they'll go against his wishes on the presentation.

Four original Superman films plus the Donner version of II with Supergirl and Returns. That's seven films. Two discs each gives you 14.

Now what the hell they'd put on the second discs for III, IV, and Supergirl is beyond me, but that's the easiest solution.

Maybe one of the discs is a score CD?

Beyond that, HELL YES to the new Forbidden Planet transfer.

The real reason to look forward to these SEs. And no snapper cases, natch.

I'm sure you're right. That's a shame really; non-anamporphic transfers are ass.

Busby Berkely set doesn't have 42nd Street? The fuck?

More on the Superman set from the Warner chat at HTF:

- SUPERGIRL will be released, but NOT in this boxset

- Original Theatrical Cut of SUPERMAN included

- Donner cut of II WILL be available separately

- Lots of deleted scenes for IV, but no extended cut
post #30 of 38
Sounds good so far. However that being said buying Superman 3 and 4 doesn't.
What's this, the 4th release of 2001 on DVD? I like the picture quality on all my Kubrick DVDs, dammit. But I am curious about the extras.

Its interesting that they're working on a Blade Runner DVD considering there's no guarantee it'll get released.

I think my curiosity is pretty much sated knowing that there actually ARE extras this time around.

Superman 2 is available separately. He also said Supergirl is NOT included.

We will be releasing both the extended cut of SUPERMAN THE MOVIE (the one on DVD now) and the original, shorter theatrical version as well. Further, we will be releasing both the SUPERMAN II theatrical cut, and the "Donner cut" both in the box, or available singularly

Any chance of a Road Warrior SE?

[Warner] Yes.Most definitely. We're working on it right now.

We're working hard on BLADE RUNNER, can't say any more, and hope we have good news to share with you fine HTF folk soon.

From the HTF Transcript:

Quote:
[JeffNewcomb] I was pleased to see four Kubrick films announced for 2006. What about the others? Will they be revisited?

[Warner] It is very likely we will revisit the other Kubrick titles as well in the future.
Quote:
[VincentP] You guys are the best major studio for DVD releases. There's just one real improvement I'd like to see, especially with the upcoming SE of A Clockwork Orange. I'd like to know when is Warner going to start doing 16x9 enhancement for 1.66:1 films?

[Warner] Thank you, Vincent. Your wish has been granted. We haven't had to release a 1.66 film since GIANT, and since then, company policy is now to release 1.66:1 films with side bars within the 16x9 frame. So yes, CLOCKWORK is being remastered in HD as we speak, and the new transfer will have the proper aspect ratio . No more 4x3 slight letterboxed DVDs of 1.66 from WHV. They have gone the way of the Snapper!
Guess that means they WILL be in widescreen

I second the "Hooray for Reading" line from above.
Oh yea, this too....

Quote:
[JackBaxter] We know that The Maltese Falcon is getting a two-disc this year. Will The Big Sleep, To Have and Have Not, or Key Largo be getting similar treatment? Also, what aspect ratios will The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut be presented in?

[Warner] We see no reason to revisit the other BOGARTS, they were restored from orig camera negative, and there really isn't much else to do that would warrant creating a new edition, THE SHINING and EYES WIDE SHUT will be 1.77 (16x9)

Has anyone at Warners ever talked about a LAST BOY SCOUT special edition? Because the movie deserves it. And quite frankly, I deserve it.
I'm sure someone has talked about it, but I bet he or she gave up before bursting into flames from shear embarassment.
