Why no love for ALIEN 3? - Page 3

The first time I watched Alien 3 I hated it with more passion than highlander 2(the only movie that I actually walked out of the theater while it was playing)

I think that part of my hate for it was because at the time I had read the Dark horse comic that had continued from aliens....Hicks was a drunk....Newt was commited....and Ripley had vanished....I really enjoyed the comic and thought it would make a perfect sequel.

So when Hicks and Newt were killed the way they were in the first few minutes I was pissed to no end....I didn't like the characters in the third movie....and felt that it was detached from the first two.

Years later I no longer hate the movie....there are some decent performances and it could have been solid ending for the series with Ripley dying and taking the queen with her....but then they had to make another movie that makes 3 look like the first.

It's not a great movie....but it's not the trainwreck the fourth one was.

One more thing... Anyone notice that the firepit Ripley jumped into in the end, when viewed from the side, is about 30 feet or so in diameter, but when you see her from above, falling... Its the size of the sun?

I loved it. The whole thing from the day it came out on VHS.

Reasons

There is nothing at all wrong with different people citing different reasons for liking or disliking ALIEN3.

I am one of the few who also love that film second to the first film. Why do I love it? The psychology of the film, yes, the darker tone, the [god forbid] bleak setting of the film. I love the idea that it is a stark contrast to the Americana 'shoot em' up' testosterone overdrive the second film was [and I love that film quite a bit]. In my opinion, Fincher tapped into an emotional resonance that ALIENS did not. In my opinion ALIENS used obvious contrivances and plot devices. That's not a bad thing, they worked, it's just obvious. James Cameron doesn't have a subtle bone in his body, and I think the ALIEN films work best subtley.

Ripley should have sacrificed herself in the end of Aliens and closed the hatch with her and the queen inside. She was basically hoping for a miracle there, she had no reason to think the queen would let go. If the queen dragged her into space, everyone dies, if she passed out, everyone dies, etc. On top of that she had no reason to belive Newt would be strong enough to hold on to something.

Bingo. Aliens defined action movies for people of a certian age (me included). We worshipped it, and were desperate for more of this story, with more of these characters, and more of this world. We wanted Alien 3 to take the story to the next level. Maybe outside of another contained environment, maybe to Earth.

But seeing the characters that we agonzied with, and were impossibly relieved to see survive the movie just be killed more or less off-screen, just demolished any good will we had for the third movie. Plus, the movie kind of sucked.
