Far Cry II: Far Harder!!

Unbelievably, Ubisoft has managed to prepare the XBOX sequel to Far Cry Instincts (listed in Amazon.com as Far Cry Instincts: Survival Island), the XBOX 360 version of both the original game and the sequel in time for a March 28th, 2006 launch date (per Amazon.com). The 360 version sounds like a great value: both games (the original enhanced for the 360) for 60.00 bucks. The Xbox sequel is 30.00 bucks.

This is probably the game that pushes me off the PS3/XBOX 360 fence. Half-Life 2 is the only superior FPS I've played, and Far Cry Multi-player is so superior to Halo 2 (and 1) that I'm basically done with the Halo universe for the indefinite future. I don't want to buy the sequel only to have buy the 360 version if/when I get the 360.

It is looking more and more like Black (assuming we don't see a 360 version announced before February 28) will be the last game I purchase for the XBOX console, which IMHO has gone out with a bang.

It will be annoying to have to buy a separate HD-DVD or blu-ray player (could somebody win that format war already)....but alas, Jack Carver needs my help and can't wait!

Are they including the map editor this time around again? I thought that was a blast. Some people made the craziest maps.

I refer to Far Cry as Halo: In the Jungle. I haven't played Halo since Far Cry came out....but I haven't played Far Cry since the 360 came out.

The variety in maps really kept things fresh, although some of the map designs were hit or miss. In terms of close quarters, the user-made maps blew away most of the pre-fab maps.

They're including the map editor, as far as I know.

I'm looking forward to Crysis, the next game from the creators of the PC version of Far Cry.

Actually, EA bought both Crytek and the FarCry engine. Apparently, the bad do sleep well. Oh well, I still get to laugh at them for releasing "The Godfather: The Game".

It seems as though Ubisoft has just spun off completely from the original Far Cry series.

I just read in the new OXM that the editor is indeed included, and improved. The coolest part though, is that you can import your old maps and take advantage of the new additions with some further editing.

This morning I looked at a video clip on IGN where they compared water effects from the PC version to the new 360 version, and there really is no comparison. The 360 water effects are amazing. It's on this page:

Thanks for posting the link. It looks fantastic....I'm such a sucker for water effects.
No problem. I am too. I don't have a 360, and probably won't be getting one anytime soon, but Far Cry, Ghost Recon, and Elder Scrolls IV are making me twitch...

I have the Xbox version of Far Cry and the 360 is getting a sweet deal with a souped up version of that game coupled witht he new content. And judging by those water effect it really DOES look souped up.

Yeah, March is going to be an expensive month. I never owned the original Xbox but I've got a 360, so hearing that they're releasing a souped up version of Far Cry for the 360 was a nice bonus.

I saw a demo for Ghost Recon playing in a nearby mall, and I couldn't believe that I was watching actual game footage.

No PC version?

Booooooo.
You don't get new Far Cry, we don't get F.E.A.R.. Fair trade.
Another short video of Predator on the 360:

Predator Vid

It's the one titled "Water Effects, Draw Distance".
Impressive stuff... You get an even better look at the water there. Different settings, different lighting.

Maybe not?

F.E.A.R. to 360?
So, FarCry II is coming out in 10 days, anyone else looking forward to it? The game engine certainly looks impressive, and the ability to go anywhere in a vast wilderness in Africa will be a nice change of pace from the sci-fi corridor FPS games that we get so many of. As long as they don't fuck up the save system like they did on the first game (a game I beat, but with a huge amount of frustration) by using a checkpoint system, I'll be picking this one up in a few weeks.

And it's coming out on the PC as well as the 360.
This thread was actually intended for discussion about a 360 port of the original game, funny enough. The title is a bit misleading.

But yeah, I'm really psyched for Far Cry 2. *Unbelievably* so. The thought of a free-roaming GTA clone makes my head spin. I know Fallout 3 will almost certainly be the better game, but I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't more excited about this one.

Yea, I kind of realized that AFTER I posted, since I just ran a Google search and this thread came up and the title made it sound like a discussion of the sequel. It doesn't really matter though, I guess.

I was just watching some gameplay footage that got me really excited. The ability to start brush fires and burn everything to the ground sounds like a lot of fun. I think this and Fallout 3 will be the two games I mostly play this fall.
playing it as we speak. is that clancy brown i hear?
I gotta wait til' payday tomorrow to get it. Can't wait.
I thought Far Cry 2 didn't drop until the 22nd?
You're right, the 22nd. I got confused after NINheads post. It is up on Torrent sites though, must resist the urge.
Playing it on 360. Apparently, Ubisoft loves bribing Gamestop managers.

Well, I guess you deserve something for putting up with peoples shit during the holidays (one more month til the fun starts!)

How's the game looking so far though? What I really want to know is

1) How's the save system?

2) How does the AI handle such an open ended environment with a "go anywhere" mentality?
I'm gonna get this for the pc. Need more games to tax this new sli rig.

Any first thoughts, Ninhead?
Absolutely gorgeous. The lighting and environments are amazing. You can only save in safehouses or other safe zones (weapon dealers, Mike's Bar). I would love to try the online out, but Time Warner decided we don't need internet for a couple of hours. The only real gripe I have with it at the moment is the map/GPS. Maybe its only because I don't have a HDTV, but trying to find where I'm going is a real pain in the ass, especially when driving. The GPS screen is tiny on the dashboard, which makes navigating a bit of a challenge. All in all, though, its fantastic. This game wasn't even on my radar and I'm loving it.

Oh, and if you drive through a rival faction's camp en route to somewhere, they'll pile in to Jeeps and chase the shit out of you until you or they die. Its really cool.

Can you be strategic and plan missions or do you essentially just go in and start killing everyone?

Is there any difference between who you pick as your character as far as skills or story?
Really surprised that more people aren't excited about this game. Of all the forums I frequent, even games like *Fable 2* are garnering more hype.

Honestly, this is looking more and more like my most anticipated Fall release, and that's saying a lot considering how absolutely packed these next couple of months will be.

On a lot of the missions, there's an opportunity before you enter the mission area to gather some intel. To be honest, though, once I get into the area, I've never really taken the time with checking it as I progress, what with being shot and all.

As far as the character selection, there's no difference that I can tell. The unchosen characters are put into the story, though.

I've been wondering the same thing for a couple weeks, this game is totally under the radar. I'm hoping there are a lot of people who are surprised by it, though, because any FPS that doesn't take place in a sci-fi setting is worth checking out.

Just pre-ordered this on Steam (saved five bucks). Can't wait to give it a go come Wednesday.

Getting this and Fable tomorrow. I, personally, am hyped.
I'll be getting it too. I just need to start praying my system can handle it.
System requirements don't look that ridiculous, even though you'll probably need a better machine then what the minimum says.

Minimum requirements

* CPU: Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz, Pentium D 2.66 Ghz, AMD Athlon 64 3500+ or better
* RAM: 1 GB
* Video card: NVidia 6800 or ATI X1650 or better (Shader Model 3 required, 256 Mb of graphic memory)

Recommended

* CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo Family, AMD 64 X2 5200+, AMD Phenom or better
* RAM: 2 GB
* Video card: NVidia 8600 GTS or better, ATI X1900 or better (512 Mb of graphic memory)
* Sound: 5.1 sound card recommended

Supported Video Cards:

NVidia 6800, NVidia 7000 series, 8000 series, 9000 series, 200 series. 8800M and 8700M supported for laptops. ATI X1650 – 1950 series , HD2000 series , HD3000 series , HD4000 series.
I got mine pre-ordered from Steam as well, because hey, five bucks is five bucks. Can't wait to play it tomorrow.

I don't love the first person driving, but other than that it's been cool. Only a couple hours in; need to stop getting killed.

This was a trait of the original as well. I found that just getting out of the vehicle and going by foot was much easier most of the time. The boats were the only vehicle that worked really well.

And I'd be disappointed if this game wasn't as difficult as the original, which was probably one of the harder FPS games I've played.

The PC or Xbox/360 version(s)?
The reviews for this are all saying favourable things, which is a plus. It looks great but i'm not entirely sure why i'd buy it.

Does it do anything special, Russ? Genuine question, not a dig.

PC version set to medium difficulty (I don't do easy). Never played the 360 version.

The PC version of the first Far Cry was definitely some tough shit. It took me literally hours to get up into that boat and to the roof top. Then when you finally get up there the helicopter shows up and blows you to bits in seconds.
Loved their game engine, but found the original boring as hell. Same with Crysis.

God I was stuck on that part for days. I found out it was better to avoid what the game was telling you (to get to the front of the boat) and make a swim to the island. Then you have to duck behind a tree and fire like 13 rockets (which were hard as hell to aim) into the helicopter before he finally flew off.

I'm not sure yet. I've been playing idly between doing other things. But it's growing on me, just as a competent FPS sandbox game.

And some of the chaos is great. I shot a propane tank in a shantytown, which started a brush fire, which (a) sent two enemies running and (b) ignited a small munitions dump, sending a couple of rockets spiraling all over the place. One hit the guy I was trying to kill. The other hit me.
None of the bigger sites have a review of this yet and I don't want to drop $60 on a shit pile when so many games are coming out this season.
I can't tell from the pre-release info - did they retain any of the SF/Horror elements from the first game, or is this one firmly grounded in reality?

I'm waiting til I get home to play this, but from what I can tell, it stays in reality. I'm glad for that, though, because the sci-fi shit in the first game was kind of shoehorned in and was really only a small part anyway. The Trigens were a pain in the ass, especially those mutant monkeys that fire rockets.
