Far Cry II: Far Harder!! - Page 3

I'm not saying it's a perfect game, but getting ambushed on the plains as the sun rises and watching the flames from a freshly exploded car consume half the savannah and the bad guys within is the sort of free form moment of gaming glory which makes me keep coming back.

Just when I thought you guys were right about playing this game in spurts, I found myself playing for over 3 hours late last night... and I only beat 4 missions total.

Yes gunfights can get slightly annoying when they happen so frequently. One thing I learned last night was that grenades really do make the difference. I lobbed a grenade into a small shed while in the middle of a gunfight last night, blew three guys to hell with one explosion(thanks to a few explosive barrels inside the shed), then continued fighting while dodging the growing flames.

So far I've just really enjoyed the tense firefights, the sparse ammunition, the weapons(and how they jam and backfire). It really adds a lot to the shooting, as half the time I'm getting my ass handed to me until I figure out a way to beat the ambush(which usually ends with massive explosions and my character a cunt hair away from death). Fuck the naysayers!

Any of you guys playing this up for some taking a stab at the multiplayer. It actually works a lot better than I thought it would although the XP/Load Out thing sort of screws over newer players.

Its I couldn't care less, not I could care less.

Anyway, I wish I checked out what you all were saying about this game, since I really hate it so far, and I only finished the tutorial mission.

I think the unresponsive element of the controls is due to cursor acceleration built into the aiming.

Glad I was able to hand out a much needed grammar lesson.

Could be my changing gamer lifestyle, could be I'm all hyperkinetic from Left 4 Dead multiplayer, but this game is grating on me (it didn't help I accidentally played the first 5 hours under my guest gamer tag. Ugh).

Too much traveling. Way too much. Everything seems designed to stall my progress and make me tread as much terrain as possible. This can get downright tedious. How can a game get all the little things right (combat, glorious vistas, sandbox freedom) and get none of the big things nailed down (boring mission design, not having respawning enemy hideouts, retarded malaria gimmick, and inane AI that results in my character being persona non grata for no reason).

I'm pretty much done with this. It's just too much work. But, man, is that world gorgeous. Fuck.

I am totally awed by FC2, even though I've been playing it since it came out. It has some of the best gameplay ever found in any videogame.

How can you not fall in love with that?

Is he about to cram his watch up that zebra's hoo-ha?

I've always thought this game was underrated, although the ending was kind of crappy.

I got this off Steam a few months ago, and after an initial few hours of wow factor, I found it actually to be a pretty dull, lifeless game. It's too big, and extremely repetitive, and the AI becomes difficult through bald cheating rather than any actual challenge. They can just see and shoot you through pretty much anything, even though they themselves are almost invisible in the brush and trees.

Gorgeous looking game, but really not much beyond that. Certainly not awe inspiring gameplay in any form, considering it's mostly just rote FPS shenanigans. The fire effects and how they're used are nice, but that's really about it that I can think of that's stuck with me. The rest, the respawning enemies, the pointless malaria, and the tiresome treks from one side of a largely blank expanse of grassland to another caused the game to lose its luster pretty quickly. Oh well, it was cheap.

I love exploration in games and just thought the jungle environment was fun to run around in. I also enjoyed looking for the diamonds. Of course I'm one of the the few people who liked Trespasser on the PC so I'm probably in the minority.
The only thing I remember about Trespasser was the truly bizarre aiming/arm controls that would frequently result in strange, impossible, painful contortions of your main character's arms.

Everything he said. The game is designed to just make you work. The Malaria and endless trudging through respawning, endlessly attacking enemies is awful.

I don't think I'd call it awful, but it definitely wears out its welcome long before it's done.

I've been playing this game for about 4 months now. I finally had to put it down and say enough. While it is fun to run through the jungle blowing up shit and I love the open world aspect. It's just too much. I hate driving for long periods in real life, why would I want to do it in a game?
It's definitely flawed. For me, it was one of those games that I didn't love, but would love to see a sequel made. There's a great game in there somewhere; they just didn't quite nail it.

Hell, I'd be happy with Far Cry 2: The Distilled Version. Keep what works and jettison the tedium
post #117 of 120
I keep trying to get into it...and I just can't. I'm with Jacob. Bring me an edited cut of the game, and I would likely fall in love.
This is one of those games that I'm proud of myself for sticking with it and beating it. It wasn't easy, and it wasn't always fun, but it was enjoyable enough for me.

On a related note, Just Cause 2 is coming soon... I remember feeling the exact same sense of, "Man I hope they make a sequel for this kinda shitty game!" when I played it.

bump

So I got this free with my graphics card and have been wanting to share some thoughts.

First is that holy balls is this AI is bad. It's this strange combination of suicidal and retarded that I almost feel sorry for them. Until I drive by one on the road who immediately stops whatever errand he was on to try and run me off the road. Nevermind that I'm armed with a flame thrower, two kinds of grenade launchers and a .50-Cal mounted on my truck, I'm sure you totally have a chance Mr Random Merc with a shitty AK and a pistol.

Half the time the AI enemies wind up killing each other by accident. Either by running over one of their buddies or blowing up half their base. It's simultaneously hilarious and sad to watch one of them try to navigate a road full of un-movable sandbags and barricades.

I'm also surprised at just how buggy this thing is too; on my first foray into exploring the plains I found a couple of gazelles. While watching them with my monocular to see if Ubisoft put much effort into the animations one of said gazelles started to float into the air. It was still cycling through its walk/run/graze animations and all, just doing so from an increasingly high altitude. Eventually it floated over a hill and I went on my merry way of slaughtering mercs and looking for diamonds. Honestly I haven't experienced this many bugs in a singleplayer game since Killzone.

That said, I'm kind of enjoying this deeply flawed game. I'm just glad I didn't pay retail for it.
