Far Cry II: Far Harder!! - Page 2

LOVE the intro, that's as far as I've got, with Dead Space and Fable 2 in my 360 drive. Looks awesome on the pc, nary a hitch in the little bit I've seen.

What? You don't have time for the four or five quality titles released within a ten (10) day span? What's wrong with you Singer.

Would people not buy video games from February until September?
Seriously, I could go without a couple of filet mignon BBQs during the summer or a $60 date-night movie if somebody'd gimme a goddamn game worth buying outside of the holiday season.
At least there will be plenty to enjoy come April when the drought begins.
Managed to install it and played a few minutes. I'm amazed at how well it plays on PC. The level of detail is not nearly as good as Crysis (at least in the system levels i'm playing), but it roons way smoother.

Will have a better look later. Now to Goo!
Well, I'm playing the inferior version (360), and so far I'm kind of underwhelmed by the graphics. They seemed a lot better in the preview videos.

That said, though, the game is some great fun. I've spent an hour alone just trying to carry out the first post-tutorial mission -- I didn't expect this game to be as unrelentingly difficult as the original, and it's not, but it's still way more of a challenge than I've seen in any recent FPS.
The game doesn't stay as tough as you think it might after that first post-tutorial mission. That one's just difficult because you're forced to face how little this game cares whether you live or die.

You're right, I was hit by a car later on and was kind of surprised to find myself instantly revived by one of my contacts. I guess the hand-holding isn't as blatant as in Fable 2, but that's still kind of disappointing.
But the disappointment is countered by the fact that, if you really don't want that guy around as a safety net, you can just shoot him and he'll be dead, period. That's something most games would never allow you to do.
Your buddy will only save you once however. You have to save at a safe house to make him "rescue-ready" again.
Fun game, but a GTA4 style GPS would have been nice. Also, wish you could have the diamond tracker out without the map being up. I walked in circles around the same diamond stash for a very long time because it was on the ground and my map was covering it up.
Anyone not using the waterways instead of roads (when possible) is a fool. Much faster, much safer (esp at night) and there are many diamond stashes.

Also: even at 45 diamonds, the camo suit is a steal. Makes night assaults so much easier.

Finally, do a few of the weapon dealer missions right at the start. They're easy and unlock a bunch of useful gear. (Which still has to be purchased, but if you're wandering around doing the missions, you'll find many diamonds.)
got it yesterday, played the first couple of missions

looks great, and i like the fact that it feels different compared to the many FPS games coming out these days.

only thing that bugs me (and this is just me) is how hard it is to find guys who are shooting at me through tree's. damn difficulty hehe
post #64 of 120
The maps and objective allocators could be easier as well. I spent 10 minutes in a shanty village trying to find the objective.

I did all the weapon dealer missions it would let me but still do not have all unlocked. Do they start up again later?

Why is no one talking about this game? It's great, but hard as shit. I won't tell you how many times I had to try the first prologue mission before I beat it. There is a real sense of accomplishment when you do though.

I guess it was lost among all the big releases. I'm still loving it though and only Fallout 3 could tear me away from this.

The game is fun, I had it for a couple of days thru gamefly, but I didn't find it too hard. I did hate how the sentry posts that you discover have enemies respawn every time you pass through. I also felt that the main missions didn't feel any different from the sidequests and got a little annoyed with the long distance traveling to and from a mission, just wished there was a fast travel warp or something. I'll probably buy this game when the price drops so I can finish it.
I played it and felt it was trying to do something big, but didn't quite realise it. It's certainly not the ideal console game that's for sure, i'd probably have been happier playing it on PC.

The combat to me felt awful though. Pretty clunky and unrefined controls.
It was $39 at Best Buy today.
Such a great, great, game. It's refreshing to play a FPS where you're constantly on the verge of dying and have to scout out your attacks beforehand. Sneaking around the perimiter of a base and doing a bit of monocular work is oddly enthralling and I love how big the scope of the game is.
I need to get back into this. I put it down after I picked up Saints Row 2 and never started up again. I loved what I played although I kept getting my ass kicked. Some people seem to hate it though. The traveling does tend to get old.

I look forward to playing this day one purchase sometime in mid January.
I couldn't deal with it at all. I bought it and really wanted to enjoy the shit out of it, but nope. The travel times, sentry checkpoints and shoddy combat really kept me from having fun.
I don't get all these "shoddy combat" comments. I'm shooting guns at people, just like every other FPS I've ever played.
The combat engine is unrefined.

The balance of accuracy and hit damage is skewed towards silly. Hit damage is lower than it should be, yet the accuracy doesn't compensate for this - it goes the other way and makes the reticule even less precise.

So yeah. "shoddy".
You on pc or console?
Console. Both the PS3 and 360 versions have terrible responsiveness, I did say earlier it felt like it'd handle far better (like the original FarCry) on PC.
I think it might. I certainly haven't noticed it being particulary unusual.

Agreed with the damage models though, enemies seem to take an awful lot of damage considering they're almost all un-armored blood-and-muscle humans.

It's been patched once or twice on the pc as well.
I'd imagine you could mod the PC version too.

Personally I just took one look at that map and the awe wasn't there. GTA and Morrowind took that out of me long ago - and since there's just lots of driving to do in the between parts - the combat was just a nail in the coffin for me.

There's potential there, but I enjoyed Crysis more (in the battle of the FarCry sequels)
Seriously this game is utterly hateful at times. I'm getting sick and tired of having to repair my car engine, traipse across the map for Malaria pills and deal with roving bands of psychotic soldiers who will pursue me for my miles with deadset accuracy for the simple crime of driving down a road.
I can only get about one mission per every time i sit down to play. I dont mind the driving around so much, its just that every mission i choose takes me to the exact opposite corner of the map. It would have been so much better if you could have played co-op and just had one person driving and another on machine gun.
Got this, Saint's Row 2 and Dead Space for Christmas and I'm having a hard time not wanting to always play Far Cry.

I like the combat, the missions, and hell I even like the exploration/driving. Yeah, getting to a mission objective is sometimes a chore, but I like that. It's almost like a mini-mission getting to where you have to go.

I save just about every chance I get to avoid having to do too much backtracking. So far, I'm really enjoying myself though.

Fuck the AK and that first machine you find... The silenced machine gun/ mini-uzi combo is a perfect match.
I really want to play this, but for whatever reason my PC hates it. I wish I had bought it on 360, but so it is. I'm hoping to snag it on the cheap on 360 soon.
Man, fuck this game. It suffers from a really, really bad case of Assassin's Creeditis... you know, where the game is technically great and a ton of fun at the beginning but then pisses all that good will away by FORCING YOU TO DO THE EXACT SAME FUCKING THINGS OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

Take it back! *sob*
I'm sending it back to Gamefly, unbeaten, because I could care less about playing it any more.

Couldn't care less, perhaps?
No, I could care less... that's why I'm not going to continue playing.
I'm surprised you made it as far as you did. Anyone who plays this past the 2nd chapter is probably liable to have permanent brain damage. Spike....give up before its too late.
Am I right in thinking that waking up at the bottom of a pile of my friends corpses is the games highpoint after an idiotic last stand at a bar?

I just got to the South and all of my compunction to play the game just completely drained. It’s odd I have intermittent moments where I kind of love what the games trying to do, but the sheer annoyance in doing even a single mission is making that 18/33 Missions Complete stat seem like an impossible mountain to climb.
Are you not really digging Fallout 3 then? Or have you finished it already?

I just cant see why people force themselves to play games like this instead. Did you LoveFilm this one at least?
Maybe it's my "play an FC2 mission, then play another game" playstyle is helping me here, but I'm still really enjoying this on the pc.

I got Far Cry 2 for free with GoW 1 and 2 when I upgraded my 360 to one of those new Jasper models and I’ve been playing it pretty intermittently for the last three weeks. Like Jacob says it works far better as a dip in sort of game, because any longer than 45 minutes with the thing becomes an exercise in masochism. The game works, but only when you’re in the right frame of mind and once you leave that frame of mind the game becomes teeth gnashingly awful.

Fallout 3 really hasn’t grabbed me at all, but I’m putting that down to having Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Far Cry 2, Banjo Kazooie, and Left 4 Dead all on the go at once. I think I need to come back to it when I’ve got at least two or three of the above titles vacated from my playlist. It doesn’t help that whenever I settle down to play some single player I’ll get a party invite and find myself losing four hours of my life on yet another futile attempt to complete Blood Harvest on L4D or another crack at level 48 of Horde.

I will say that, contrary to your opinion, I do love the gunplay in Far Cry 2. I love how chaotic even a simple gun battle can become due to jamming weapons and bushfires, it's just a shame that you have so much combat forced on you and that there appears to be no incentive to do the side missions, on a side note what in the hell does reputation actually do.

Grammar fight!
I never got the whole could care less thing, it just doesn't actually make any sense. Couldn't Care Less states that you have no care at all, Could Care Less implies that you at least care a little.

Back to Far Cry II and a great example of why the game kind of works. After a bunch of crappy missions the halfway point of the game has you scaling a waterfall path and storming a small cabin resting on the precipice of said waterfall. It's just a great piece of design with the forking road offering a ton of opportunities for fights on the way up and the crescendo of the mission, with you attempting to flee back to relative safety from the burning cabin, being legitimately exhilirating because of the sense of danger and scale. It's one of the few missions where the size of the land really plays into the overall feel of the game.
Yeah and I do care a little (I had a lot of fun with it for the first 10 hours) so I win! If I kept playing the game I could, possibly, care less.

Whatever, it's a stupid term.

I lost my interest in this game in the south section as well, when I realized I'd have to survey the camps and open up new safe houses and do more "kill this guy" or "blow up this object" missions for people I couldn't care less about.

Dammit.
You're beyond the point of reviewing it now, surely?

Pack it up, send it back and come back to Fallout.
Yeah, probably, and I'm not going to fight with myself to finish it. Maybe for one of those catching up columns.

I'm going back to Fallout as soon as the DLC hits! Hopefully in a week or two...
Definitely a dip in for a short while, then play something else. Type of Game.

Rinse and repeat

Fun game, but it could have been truly special if they'd ironed out the kinks.
