Production company changing LORD OF WAR's aspect ratio for DVD

From Bill Hunt at The Digital Bits:

"Now for a bit of actual DVD-related news: It seems that Lionsgate's new Lord of War DVDs have been released with anamorphic widescreen video at the rather surprising aspect ratio of 1.78:1 - surprising because the film was released theatrically at 2.40:1. We've contacted Lionsgate about this, based on complaints from our readers, and have been told that the 1.78:1 ratio was chosen by the film's production company. So it's not an error, but rather was a deliberate decision, though we can't confirm whether or not director Andrew Niccol was involved. Hopefully, that clears the issue up... at least a little."

Apparently they're doing the same thing to SAW II for its release.

For this I use the tried and true, WTF???

Who knows.

I know they changed the ratio for STAR TREK VI for DVD, from 2.35 to 2.00. TOP GUN was something like 1.78 on its original release, and 2.35 on the SE.

The bastards are doing it over here for ages. They want to fill a widescreen TV and thus create a bastardised aspect ratio (in essence a version of pan & scan) and sell it as "widescreen".

Could it be that they're doing this to encourage you to buy the wider aspect ratios later on on HDDVD and Blu-Ray?
I've always been surprised by the industry's lack of foresight in regards to releasing widescreen and full-screen DVDs at the same time. An industry this greedy should have released only full-screen DVDs since 1997 and waited until this year to push widescreen DVDs. This would have encouraged more people to replace their DVD collection and get more of them to buy Widescreen TVs.
I know what you're thinking:"We will buy these eventually anyway". True, but in this industry they want their money sooner rather than later, and besides, many people out there would have kept their current "widescreen" discs and not bother with the new ones.

The kind of people who care about widescreen are the same people who'll buy the movie again on HD anyway.

So you don't really care whether a film is in widescreen or fullscreen then?
