The new Felix Leiter?

Martin Campbell says the CIA agent and longtime Bond ally is coming back for "Casino Royale". Thank God! We suffered through Joe Don Baker's "Jack Wade" for two films more than we should have, and by the time we got a pretty sweet "Damian Falco" played by Michael Madsen, it was too little too late.

So now, the original is back, and should be a pretty plum role for an American actor to do as a couple days work. Leiter was always pretty cool, and they cast some up and comers from time to time.

Some possibilities:

Gary Sinise
Josh Lucas
Robert Patrick
Matt Dillon

Those guys have a pretty American feel to them. Who would you all like to see?

Leslie Nielsen.

I was hoping for more Madsen in DIE, reason #43 I didn't like that movie. If they want someone with some mileage I'd go with Mickey Rourke or even Liotta. If they want to go a little younger then Neal Mcdonough would be a good choice.

I like Gary Sinise. But I always felt that Leiter should be a little, um, lighter in tone than the brooding Bond. I know he's a little old to play Leiter in this reboot but I would love to see Terry O'Quinn show up as one of Bond's American allies.

Whoeveer they get should be able to play old enough to be more experienced than Craig, but not so old that you get the "kindly uncle" effect.

I'm just glad to hear Felix coming back! It sounds like even with the trouble they're having, they really are attempting to adapt the novel, to some degree anyway. It's ocurring to me now that there aren't many lesser-known younger American actors that I'm a fan of.

Lucas might be a good choice, but I say that mostly because I haven't seen much of his work and haven't associated him with a particular style or character.

What about a cactus playing a flute?

Get Clancy Brown to play Felix Leiter. Do anything you can to get that actor more work, as he's an awesome character actor. He'd kick ass as Leiter.
Tom Berenger? He could use the work and he deserves a bit of a comeback. In a similar vein, I'm liking either Scott Glenn or Treat Williams.

What about Ron Perlman?

If we're going younger, Cole Hauser's a possibility.

ETA: I'd dig Dermot Mulroney or Dylan McDermott as Leiter.
Well Leiter would be a step up for Madsen from "BLoodrayne".
Ironic that his career has gone into the shitter whereas his sister Virginia seems to be enjoying a major comeback.

Now we're talking. With the exception of Perlman (I love him, but not for Felix), these are all very cool choices and the right sort of actor in regards to fame and stature. Your last two especially are favorites that just have never really been able to get over the hump.

Neal McDonough is a solid choice.
Couple of other choices...

It's probably because I just finished watching the complete series of PROFIT on DVD, but I'm inclined to think Adrian Pasdar could cut it:

Elias Koteas could easily portray a guy with a few war zones in his history:

And I think Noah Emmerich does the tough-guy/second-banana thing pretty well:

Other choices: Ron Eldard and David Morse.
Ron Livingston (Office Space, Band of Brothers, etc).

I think the Dr No version was the best Leiter--a slightly more easygoing, CIA version of Bond.
Noah Emmerich's the one guy who hits closest to home with me for some reason. Leiter wasn't as much of a pretty boy as some of the suggestions here. A charmer, sure, but people like Mulroney are too "American Bond" to be effective.
I think Tom Jane would be a fine choice.
Denis motherfucking Leary.
Ron Livingston is the answer. Then again...that guy could play Mother Theresa and I would be up for it.
Noah Emmerich also gets my vote. So do Ron Eldard and Jake Webber. To me the better Leiters were Rik Van Nutter in Thunderball or John Terry in Living Daylights if you gotta go with a young & cocky american Bond, and David Hedison (Live & Let Die, Licence to Kill) if you go for a more mature & serious one as portrayed in the novels.

Cause seriously, you all know Tom Jane, Rourke or Liotta won't even be considered...

BTW, there's a script review here at Latino Review. The good thing? Apparently it's pretty good. The bad? It's at Latino Review.

Jane might be getting a bit too big to a glorified cameo like this, but Rourke and Liotta aren't. They're in that age bracket now where this is the sort of role they should be fighting for. They aren't going to do any romantic leads, they probably aren't going to do a whole lot of leads period. And their looks are suited for genre movies.

Oh, and btw, apparently there is a press conference today. Sony says no casting announcements, but why else have the press conference. Variety says it's between Eva Green (The Dreamers, Kingdom of Heaven) and Olivia Wilde (The OC, and very hot) for Vesper. Mads Mikkelsen, as I put in another thread, looks to be Le Chiffre. He looks cool.

I actually think he wouldn't be bad. Leiter always took himself less seriously than Bond in the novels. Not necessarily to the point that he should act as comic relief, but even after he SPOILER got his hand and leg bitten off SPOILER he was in good spirits most of the time.

If somebody really hasn't seen "Licence to Kill" after 17 years, they probably shouldn't care about having it spoiled.
I'm more interested in preserving plot points for people that haven't had a chance to read Live and Let Die in the last fifty years, but that's a good point.

No he's black NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Jeffrey Wright? Hell yeah, that's an awesome choice IMO, great actor. I loved him in "Basquiat", "Shaft", and "Ali", and he's been solid in so much else. He played a good MLK in "Boycott". But mainly, he's one cool dude, and a quality actor. If they nabbed him, I think it speaks well to how this thing is shaping up.
I would have used Wright as the villain. He was great in Shaft. The only good thing for that matter.

But after watching Broken Flowers he seems like he'd be a good sidekick as well.
Awesome choice. As a matter of fact i'd say with Campbell, Craig and Wright involved my anticipation levels are rising. Which hasn't happened since Tomorrow Never Dies (which was dissapointing and came off the heels of the great Goldeneye).
Now what's going to be interesting to see is who they cast as the henchmen and what their gimmicks are. Virtually anything would top MISTER KILL.
Wow. Here we are throwing out relative no-names for Leiter and we get Wright. I've honestly never expected the role to be offered to anyone who might actually do something interesting with it. And yeah, the the fact that he's black is going to upset the same idiots who were upset about Mos Def playing Ford Prefect.
Felix has always been a favorite character of mine in the novels but he's been a non-entity in the films. I think I even read that the producers were concerned that Leiter being played by Jack Lord in Dr. No was dangerous for them because if Felix was anywhere near as cool or interesting as Bond was, then it would be difficult to establish the character's popularity as a solo action hero.
That's a valid concern though because in a few of the novels Bond and Leiter act almost like buddy-cops and that's not where the strength of the franchise lies. The films have avoided that so far by making sure no one really gets or cares who this guy is supposed to be. Wright is different enough from Craig in attitude, demeanor, and yeah, appearance, that hopefully they'll be able to give him something to do without the fear that he'll be confused for the star of the show. I like it.
Well, the main cast actually goes like this: Craig as Bond, Green as Vesper, Mikkelsen as LeChiffre, Wright as Leiter, Judi Dench as M, Giancarlo Giannini as Bond's contact Massus/Mathis, Simon Abkarian as arms dealer Dimitrios, Caterina Murino as Dimitrio's missus Solonge,Tobias Menzies as M's aide Villiers, Ivana Milicevic as LeChiffre's henchwoman Valenka, Clemens Schik as LeChiffre's henchman Kratt, Ludger Pistor (Luger pistol? that's a cool name) as swiss banker Mendel, and Claudio Santamaria as Dimitrio's contact Carlos.

So there you go.

I was pleased to see Giacarlo Giannini sort of quietly added in there. He's fantastic, from "Hannibal" and "Man on Fire" here in the U.S. This is looking like a very quality cast, and it looks like Campbell has indeed cast mostly unknowns again, which I like.
I am really digging this very international cast.

Daniel Craig

Eva Green

Mads Mikkelsen

Jeffrey Wright

Judi Dench

Giancarlo Giannini

Simon Abkarian

Caterina Murino

Tobias Menzies

Ivana Milicevic

Clemens Schick

Ludger Pistor

Claudio Santamaria

Awesome job Moovyphreak, thanks for the pics. I didn't know what hardly any of the cast looked like. That Ivana Milicevic is hot as hell too, I got a look at her in "Just Like Heaven", my Valentine's Day obligated viewing with the Mrs. Tobias Menzies looks like a creepy bastard, in fact, a lot of these guys look like really perfect Bond casting.
Not a problem, Stew.

You can thank Google Images too, as that is where I was able to round up all the pictures.

And yes, Ivana Milicevic is very hot. She's been a favorite hottie of mine for a while. It'll be interesting to see her in a villainous role, as she usually plays nice friendly characters. She's been in bit roles in American films for about 10 years now. I still remember her cracking wise with Will Smith as the lingerie salesgirl in Enemy of the State. And she also appeared as the "dream girl/co-worker" on HBO's Mind of the Married Man a few years ago and CBS's recently cancelled Love Monkey. She'll also be co-starring in Running Scared, which opens next week in U.S. theaters.

Outside of the main cast members, Giannini and Milicevic, I was fairly unfamiliar with the rest of the supporting cast. And now that I have seen his picture, I do recognize Tobias Menzies as Marcus Brutus from HBO's Rome.
