House of the Dead 2 thoughts on premiere

I saw the premiere on Sci-Fi today, and I have to say I didn't think it was that bad. It was certainly a step up from the first one. There were some links to the first one like Ellie Cornell coming back, and the fact that Sid Haig is the father of the main character of the first one. Emmanuelle Vaugier being in it made it a bit better. Did anyone notice that after everthing happens in the beginning it said 29 days later? That had me laughing. Also when that one soldier who is like the Private Hudson of the group says "They got the sarge!" I couldn't help but think back to Aliens after Apone is taken by the Aliens and Hudson says almost the exact same thing.

It still had it's faults though, The biggest faults, were that certain members of the team were getting infected way too early in the film, and the generic soldiers. The sleazy soldier, the jittery Hudsonesque soldier who wigs out a lot, and the tough girl soldier.

All in all, I thought it was a good cheesy B-movie, that I enjoyed, and that is hands down better than the first, and it doesn't take much to beat the first. The action and zombie effects were good, and there was a good amount of gore for it being a tv premiere. I'll definitely check this out on the r-rated or uncut dvd release.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

The stupidity of soldiers ruined it for me. I mean they know they're up against zombies, so why would you stick your hand anywhere near one of their mouths?

I think it says something of the zombie movies out there, when despite all of the flaws, it wasn't that bad.

Not bad for a TV movie (gore score only). Bad in most other ways.

I am aware of the tremendous backlash against Uwe and anyone who tries to defend him, but I wouldn't have changed a thing about the first House of the Dead. A lot of people don't see it as a good bad movie but I have rarely laughed as hard.

Is the sequel funny?

I agree with Soybomb. I bust out that DVD quite often while getting drunk. I think it's a fucking funny movie. Clint Howards performance lone is comedy gold. I had no idea about this sequel, though. I'll have to look out for a repeat showing.

OK, I really don't know what's so funny about House of the Dead. Pathetic and boring doesn't equal funny (unintential or not), but that's just me. Still, it didn't prevent me from watching Alone in the Dark and I bet I will see Bloodrayne someday.

It wasn't boring to me. At least every 5 minutes there was some hilariously bad piece of dialouge, some insane plot hole, or action sequence.

It was a poorly done movie, but Freaking Citizen Kane compared to the original.

What's funny about HOUSE OF THE DEAD?

A chick has a shotgun. There are zombies about. Instead of just, uh, standing there, and shooting... like any normal person would... she decides to leap up into the air and... shoot... and we are treated to slow mo Matrixesque bullet time flying around her as she is airborne, shooting her shotgun. There is no reason whatsoever for her to jump. None.

If that's not funny... well... It's not funny, it's hilarious.

ALONE IN THE DARK topped it though when the bounty hunter leaps through a window that is right next to the door, and Christian Slater pulls this absurd off the floor wire fu gainer move... if you've seen it you know the move. We watched that part over and over, guffawing into the night... Ah, thanks for those classic moments Dr. Boll.

And the casting alone in "Dungeon Siege",guarantees Boll may top himself there.
Not to mention that the idea of Boll trying to do a "Lord Of The Rings" type epic promises to be a total laugh riot.
Although I have to note that both HOTD and ALID had a lot of scenes that were just painful to sit through, not funny in the least.

Yes King Burt Reynolds is possibly his most brilliantly awful casting to date. And I like Burt Reynolds. Henry Hill as an evil sorceror is a close second though. Liotta must know what a joke it is and is just having fun with it, that's the only rationalization I can find. I have high expectations of Dungeon Siege topping HOTD and AITD as his greatest so awful it's funny movie. The trailer already has a Bollerific action moment, towards the end when Henry Hill leaps straight up and back slightly to dodge a sword swipe that's already like a foot above his head in the first place. How do you dodge a sword swing that could almost maybe cut off a loose strand of hair, but only if you didn't comb it? Leap STRAIGHT up in the air and fall backwards, and make sure you keep your eye on the blade as it sails by your face in slomo...

Agreed that despite the few laugh out loud moments the rest of his films are generally extremely painful. It's best to watch it with pals you can make fun of the film with to help pass the time during the so bad it's not even funny parts.

I have a theory about POSTAL. I think it could be the end of Dr. Boll. Controversial and satirical material such as POSTAL requires a certain sensibility, and I definitely do not think Boll possesses it. The tongue in cheek satirical subtle touches are out of his range, so the film will come across as this awful movie about a guy killing everything senselessly... Imagine for a moment if someone much less capable then Oliver Stone had made NATURAL BORN KILLERS for instance... I think it will be very interesting. I'm not saying POSTAL is full of nuance, but without the sarcastic tongue in cheek absurdity tone, well, it'll just be completely ineffective and distasteful.
