NASCAR 2006 Season

Unofficial Top 10:
1)Jimmie Johnson
2)Casey Mears
3)Ryan Newman
4)Elliot Sadler
5)Tony Stewart
6)Clint Bowyer
7)Brian Vickers
8)Dale Earnhardt Jr.
9)Ken Schrader
10)Dale Jarrett

Not as exciting as last years 500, but it was still a good start for the season. I certainly didn't expect Jimmie Johnson to win. You know Chad Knaus must have been grinding his teeth into stumps having to watch his driver win it without him. I didn't care to see it end the way it did though, even if it was mere seconds from actually finishing under green.

Jr. had a good day coming in 8th, he could have easily won had he gotten some solid drafting help. His car was one of the strongest in the field, as usual. No matter how well he does on ST's, and SW's this year, he will always be a frontrunner on the SS's. I expect he will be really strong this season overall.

Jeff Gordon and his crew put forth a great effort for opening day. After making contact with Tony Stewart on lap 49, sending them both into the wall, the 24 car sustained significant damage and returned from the pits in 41st. They made it back into the top 10 after getting the car back into shape, but losing 3rd gear, and further trouble on the track, relegated him to a 26th place finish. Not as disasterous of an end as I had anticipated, in light of all the trouble he'd been dealt. I think the run bodes well for their season. Letarte definitely knows what he's doing at this point.

Biggest story of the day for me, was Tony Stewart. After all week of him complaining about aggressive driving, he sure backs up all that talk in a very strange way. Not checking up on Jeff was one thing, but the way he blatantly took Matt Kenseth out was just fucked up. At 190+ you don't play around like that no matter what the retaliation is for. Save that kinda bangin' for the short tracks.

I'm just so glad FOX takes over now.

I think we saw what a pampered crybaby bitch Tony Stewart is today. Having Kyle and Kurt Bush both get fucked towards the very end of the race fucked up my fantasy game, but I still pulled off a win with Ryan Newman.

Stewart is, as Stewart does.

What a fuckhole he was during his post-race interview, not to mention his reckless behavior on the track all day. Gibbs better start reelin' up that huge slack he's let out on Tony's leesh...and he better do it quick.
Fantasy team, not so hot this weekend. Got only substantial points for Jr. after Jeff's wash of a day, Ky. Busch's black flag and Petty's wreck.

Stewart's my favorite driver, but he was out of line yesterday. I don't think he had very much fun this week.
I can't believe the amount of shit ass luck Petty Enterprises has. They never cause a wreck (unless Jeff Green is in the car) but they always... ALWAYS get caught up in other people's messes. It breaks me heart everytime I see Kyle get caught up in something that he had nothing to do with. Just like yesterday. And now Bobby too. That team is probably the number one team that needs to have their luck changed and deserves some good fortune.
I only had Petty because we have to pick a C-list driver for our team each week.

It is a bit of a sad state when you're not surprised to see both Petty cars running in 20th or worse.
I picked Petty too because when he finishes it's ually somewhere around 15th-25th. Which for that team is a win. And he was really the only good choice in the group I had choose from.
Do you do the Yahoo groups fantasy? Next week shouldn't be that hard, since theres 5 or 6 guys that always run well at Fontana. Edwards, Biffle, Johnson, the Busch Brothers, Stewart and Gordon all usually finish in or near the top 10.

Edwards I think has finished top five in the past four races.
No, not that. A local sports bar setup a pool and I entered. I can't be bothered with the Yahoo! one. I kept forgetting about it last time I did it several years ago. Plus, I've already missed the 500.
NASCAR suspended Chad Knaus for three more races. And fined him $25,000 and put him on probation for the rest of the year. They should've fined him a bit more (maybe $50,000?) and suspended him for 4 races. Knaus needs to learn and I have a feeling this won't be the last time he does something like this. I love the #48 team. They're my second favourite behind Jeff Gordon's team but with this shit Knaus does it makes me skeptical of Hendrick Motorsports. And the fact that Rick Hendrick doesn't do anything about it makes even more upset.

Ryan Newman sure has a hard on for Jimmie Johnson. In all his post race interviews he's ripping on JJ and his crew, calling them out as cheaters. I can remember it wasn't long ago everyone was saying the same about Ryan when he was enjoying his big win streak in '04. Drivers and crewchiefs said Ryan and his crew were finding ways to pass NASCAR inspections while sneaking in more fuel than was allowed. He won so many of those fuel mileage races, while all the other Fords(Rusty Wallace included)couldn't make it as far as he did after each pit stop. Sounds like sour grapes to me, with a splash of guilty conscience stirred into the mix. What do you think?

Tony Stewart is behaving rather poorly as the reigning champion. I thought after he was successful in keeping his cool throughout last season, he would finally be over the hurdle of being his own worst enemy. He's just gotta be able to see how much of a total ass he was in his interview right after the race. I think his skill on the track is second only to Gordon's, but I know his people skills are just about as developmentally challenged as Mike Tyson's. "This aggression will not stand, man."
I thought the same thing after Newman's comments. I thought he was going to slip on all the bullshit that was coming out of him.

Greg Biffle is the clear frontrunner to win at todays 2 mile downforce track:California, winning this race last year, as well as the Busch race yesterday. I predict it's going to be a Rousch Racing day with Biffle, Martin, Kenseth, and Edwards out front all day. Kurt Busch will be very strong as well in light of how fast his time was in nabbing the pole, and he's undoubtedly hungry for a win today to offset his 38th place finish at Tona last week. All the Ford's(even non-Rousch ones)have an advantage with their aero package at these 2 mile downforce tracks(California, Michigan)having won more races since 2000 than all the other manufacturers combined.

Any predictions for a winner today? I honestly have to say Biffle. I don't want to see him win by any means, but the numbers indicating a Ford will be pulling into Victory Lane at the end of the day, are simply overwhelming. Barring aside any on track mishaps, I predict that all the Rousch Ford's will finish in the top 10, hell, maybe even top 5.
Biffle has bad luck after leading a billion laps. Go figure.

Another boring California race.
I'm happy for Kenseth though I was hoping Johnson could've sneaked by at the end. I'm a little disapointed in Gordon's 13th place run but I guess that's what they get for taking two tires.

On a side note, I think I may have a good chance at winning the weekly pool at a local sports bar. My drivers finished well enough. I finished 2nd last week and lost by one point. Though second pays nothing it'll be interesting nonetheless. Here's hoping I won!

Top 10:California

1)Matt Kenseth
2)Jimmie Johnson
3)Carl Edwards
4)Kasey Kahne
5)Jeff Burton
6)Jamie McMurray
7)Casey Mears
8)J.J. Yeley
9)Mark Martin
10)Kyle Busch

Not quite the results I had predicted, but it looked to be dead on the money until the 20 and 16 blew up. Not a very fun race to watch, but California(one of my least favorite)never really is IMO. There's a break this week, with the next race at Las Vegas, another one of my least favorite tracks unfortunately. But then the next three are some of my favorites:Atlanta, Bristol, Martinsville. The two best short tracks back to back this year, that's gonna be some fun shit right there.

Good win for Kenseth. Too bad Stewart blew his engine though, as he was poised to take the lead from Biffle towards the end. I was surprised Biffle and crew felt they needed to run so hot yesterday, since they've dominated there with less for at least two years now. All the Rousch cars are essentially the same setup engine-wise, so I imagine Biffle must have gone with too much tape as extra insurance against his teamates, since the rest of their rides held up to finish the race.

Current Standings

1)J. Johnson 355
2)C. Mears -39
3)M. Kenseth -47
4)K. Kahne -60
5)Earnhardt Jr. -68
6)M. Martin -80
7)R. Newman -82
8)C. Bowyer -84
9)B. Vickers -95
10)E. Sadler -96

Nice finish to another wise boring ass race. Glad to see that Jimmie snuck by at the VERY end there to win it. The #48 team is on fire! Shit, fire Knaus and hire the guy calling the shots for Johnson. At least this guy hasn't cheated yet. And he's already won twice.

Yeah, Dariun Grubb's record is 2 wins, and a 2nd place finish, out of only three races as a crewchief, ever. That's just insane. They might want to renegotiate Knaus's contract.

That was a nice move by Johnson through 3 & 4 to take it away from Kenseth clean, exactly what Carl Edwards did to JJ last year in Atlanta.

Gordon had a strong day and finished 5th. I think Jeff will have a good run this week in Atlanta too, maybe win it. He's due for a win and he's always been strong there.
My fantasy team finished pretty well this week. Most of my guys were in top 15. I'll have to head down to the sports bar and see if I've made any ground up.

Yeah, I was so happy to see Jeff finish 5th. That team needed that badly. They haven't exactly started the year all the greatly. Hopefully Atlanta will at least see another top five run.

Good to see Martin still doing well in his last year. But yet again Stewart's temper gets the better of him and he finishes, what, 20th?
My fantasy did great again! Kasey Kahne winning, Dale Jr., Johnson, Stewart, Gordon and Petty all finishing the top eight should really boost my standings. Speaking of Petty finishing eight how great was that to see? Petty Enterprises really needed that and hopefully that'll be th first of many great finishes to come.

So I guess this thread is dead now? Too bad. At least it lasted a little longer then most NASCAR threads do here.
I'll bite....Jeff Gordon getting pissed and shoving Kenseth was awesome. Matt Kenseth was in fear and literally crying in post race interviews. I think Jeff might have made some fans for himself.

And it needed to be done. There is a way to nudge someone and a way not too. Kurt Busch used a good move and "nudged" Kenseth out of the lead. Kenseth shimmied all over Gordon's bumper and spun him out.
I'm a little disapointed in the whole thing, to be honest. I mean I know it's a small racetrack, but everyone just seems to accept that with a few laps to go it's perfectly normal to knock someone out of the way. Jeff's darker side (always knew he had one) certainly got an airing in this race, anyway.

Hell no! I don't want it to die! I've just been really busy lately, sorry about that.

Bristol Top 10
1)Kurt Busch
2)Kevin Harvick
3)Matt Kenseth
4)Carl Edwards
5)Bobby Labonte
6)Mark Martin
7)Greg Biffle
8)Kyle Busch
9)Ryan Newman
10)Kasey Kahne

So now then... about Matt Kenseth. He shocked me by doing that to my boy, and on the last lap no less. Jeff dropped from 3rd to 21st with Matt's little outburst. I'm pretty damn sure Matt was just misdirecting his anger he felt towards Busch taking away his lead(though in Kurt's defense, it was about as "nice" of a bump and run manuever that you will ever see)and Jeff just happened to be the only one nearby for Matt do dish some hate out on.

Jeff passed Matt clean, and was faster than Matt, but he got held up by the car in front of him after he made the pass. Matt, still fuming over Kurt's move, simply lost his cool at that point and didn't bother to lift, or apply any brake at all to stay off of Jeff's bumper. Matt is one of the cleanest, most respectful drivers on the track every week. It was just extremely unfortunate for Jeff that Matt wasn't his usual self this time out.

In regards to, "the shove". I must admit I lept from my chair and cheered my boy on for that one. Jeff and his crew work hard all day to achieve yet another top 5 finish(it "would" have been 3 top 5's, for 3 weeks in a row)only to have Matt take it all away with his stupid mistake on the last lap. I wished for a punch to follow, but as far as shoves go, it was a good one, and almost knocked Matt on his ass.

Now if Jeff misses out on making the Top 10 after the 26th race this year, I will be looking back on this incident with much more disdain for Matt than I do now. He better be looking out for Jeff in his rearview all day at Martinsville, he owes Jeff a lot of favors right about now.

Top 10 Standings after 5 races
1)M. Kenseth
2)K. Kahne -8
3)J. Johnson -19
4)M. Martin -32
5)K. Busch -105
6)Earnhardt Jr. -118
7)J. Gordon -138
8)C. Mears -140
9)T. Stewart -181
10)D. Jarrett -189

Next week: Martinsville

I dunno, Matt said in an interview that he very nearly lost control thanks to Kurt Busch, and that he wouldn't have done that to Kurt. And he said the Jeff bump was a complete accident - though he didn't expect anyone to believe that.
I was quite shocked at what Gordon did after the race. I have never seen him do something like that before. I've seen him mad but shoving someone? And I can agree with some that Kenseth was still hot from Busch knocking him out of the way. Kenseth isn't that type of driver so I'm ok about it now... at the time I was ready to beat the shit out of the TV.

As for Gordon's little shoving thing... NASCAR has fined him $10,000 and put him on probation. Also there's a nice article on NASCAR.com about a "new" Jeff Gordon. A "badass" Jeff Gordon: http://www.nascar.com/2006/news/head...ine/index.html
post #29 of 94
Yeah! Nine of my drivers for my fantasy team were in the top 11! I was ninth overall in the standings but after todays race I should move up.

Good run for Gordon and Johnson though to bad Gordon spun his tires at the restart. Once I was Tony take off I knew it was over. Oh well. Good race overall and it was kind of nice to see Kenseth have that bad luck at the end there... sort of a karmaesque thing from last week.
Kahne's got the pole for Texas, but no one has ever won from the pole there. I'm curious about whether or not I should start him, because he'll likely run well, but history is against him.

Should be a good race this weekend. There's a lot of guys who seem to have a good shot at winning.

Have any of you read the articles about NBC sending Arab like people to last weeks race in an attempt to start a fight between them and NASCAR fans? Didn't work. The NASCAR fans didn't care who they were and carried on with watching the race.

That sounds like an idea Matt Goldberg would have submitted to Dateline for a NASCAR themed segment.

An example of Matt's love for NASCAR, right here...

That was pretty damn scary when Jeff's right front brake went out going into T1. That was the hardest hit I've ever seen him take in a race. The fact that he was able get out of his car immediately after is a testament to how safe the cars, safety devices and new softer barriers in the cup series really are.

Rookie Denny Hamlin was the man today. He started on the pole, spun out on lap 50 and fell to 40th, and yet the kid still won in dominant fashion. It's the 3rd race this year that a driver has won from the pole. He goes from 11th to 9th in points. This guy is clearly the real deal.

I agree, and Denny should be just as strong for Indy as well. Amazing that Jeff was ok after that hit.

Just in case you guys weren't already aware, the Cup series race (Daytona) is tonight on FOX. Pre-race coverage is almost over now, so we're just minutes away from going green.

edit- Brandon Routh is the Grand Marshall tonight... lol

Flag Guy: Ok Brandon here you go this is the green flag.

Brandon: Where's the rainbow coloured flag?

ZING!

Glad to see Jeff is running up front so far. It'd be great if he pulled off two in a row.

Surprisingly disappointing race, with Johnson and Gordon knocked out, and Dale Jr not competitive, it was pretty much a cakewalk for Stewart.

Juan Montoya is racing NASCAR next year! Chip Ganassi has hired him on to drive in the Nextel Cup next year. Interesting move if I say so myself.
This is a surprise, Montoya still had enough credibility to get another F1 drive next year, but has chosen to go to Nascar instead. He's in for a big shock, the two series are totally different to each other. It should be fun. Meanwhile, it seems Tony Stewart's guardian angel has been run over. If his luck doesn't change soon he may not even make the chase.

That's a shame.

Anyways, now rumours are flying that Danica Patrick will be jumping ship to NASCAR next year. Her contract with Rahal-Letterman Racing is up at the end of the year and apparently she's made it clear that she won't be returning to that team. This is all crazy! Now all we need is for Paul Tracy to ditch Champ Car and come full time into Nextel Cup and have Michael Schumacher try and compete in something he can't win at every week.

Rumor has it Danica Patrick might be making the move to NASCAR as well...

EDIT: What Brendan said...

Anyways... I like the possibility, if it's true. Someone's gotta be more feminine than Gordon...

Ooh, you gonna pay for that. But yeah, IRL and Cart have dropped the ball with a divided and bored audience, F1 is busy making big plans to get even more boring by 2008, and so somehow the mechanised rodeo has come into prominence among the big names. Maybe Montoya got a look at the big wings on the 'car of tomorrow' and figured it'd be probably be the same as his McLaren, but now with room for buffalo wings.

Edit: The winner was Jeff Gordon. First time winner at Chicago.
Maybe Montoya's decision had something to do that "Tradin' paint" thing a few years ago, where he and Jeff Gordon swapped cars for a few laps.

It was also announced today that McLaren and Montoya have parted ways meaning Montoya could possibly in a Busch car soon and a Nextel Cup car maybe even sooner then expected. This is one change I'll be keep an eye on. Toyota is coming in next year, Montoya, Mears is going to Hendrick Motorsports, Robert Yates Racing is getting ass raped and the possible return of Ward Burton. Interesting year next year for NASCAR.
Jesus.... now Mayfield (After his comments about Ray Evernham) has been offered a ride with Waltip/Toyota Racing for next year and Elliot Sadler could mvoe to the #19 car! Robert Yates Racing just keeps getting kicked in the nuts don't they?

AND!!!! AND... now open wheel racer Patrick Carpentier is interested in a Busch ride! NASCAR is the place to be it seems.
