NASCAR 2006 Season - Page 2

The Onion is as wickedly accurate as ever:
Tony Stewart Calls Upcoming Allstate 400 'A Great Opportunity To Kill Someone'

July 27, 2006 | Onion Sports

INDIANAPOLIS—Just days after accepting full responsibility for a wreck that knocked Clint Boyer and Carl Edwards out of the Pocono 500, Tony Stewart said he had put the incident behind him and was focusing his energies on the possible fatal crashes he could cause in the upcoming Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. "Indy is a great track with a lot of history, and I'd love to add to that history by running someone's car full-speed into the wall in the short-chutes after Turns 1 and 3, or spinning them down pit lane, or even bumping them into the infield, and killing them," Stewart told reporters shortly after arriving at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

I hope someone punts Tony into the wall on the first lap tomorrow.
You know that article is a joke right?

Anyways, I can't believe Jeff Burton is third in the point standings. THIRD! And he hasn't won a race in years! This guy who has shit luck for a long time has crawled his way back to the top. That team is on fire right now! If he doesn't win a race before the season is out that's friggin bullshit.
So I take it this thread is dead again. Shame. With so much going on in NASCAR right now you'd think we'd all be discussing it. The Mayfield/Sadler/19 car thing is a hot topic right now.

I was also at the race this past weekend at the Glen. We've been going since 1999. Good race this year and the Busch race was terrific. We hung around for a bit after the Busch race and I got to meet Kurt Busch:

I also met Ron Fellows after the Cup race on Sunday:

I've met Ron a few times over the years and he's just a truly nice guy.
Finally got to see the race! Poor Kurt, he was totally robbed!
heh...

I like how it hasn't been released yet and it's already dated.
Hey, that cover is now a collectors item - like the stamp with an upside-down airplane!
One more race until the cut off. I'll be heading to New Hampshire to see the beginning of the Chase. Can't wait!
Final race before the chase tonight!

1. Matt KensethLeader
2. Jimmie Johnson-9
3. Kevin Harvick-342
4. Jeff Gordon-387
5. Kyle Busch-394
6. Dale Earnhardt Jr.-412
7. Denny Hamlin-413
8. Tony Stewart-444
9. Mark Martin-457
10. Jeff Burton-459
11. Kasey Kahne -489

Kahne could get in but I hope he doesn't. It's great to see Mark Martin in the hunt in his final year of full competition. So long as Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin don't take home the cup at the end of the year, I won't be as mad if Gordon or Johnson don't win.
Stewart is out! And Gordon dropped five spots. I'll be at the New Hampshire race next weekend for the beginning of the Chase for the Cup. Can't wait!
Man, that race was a pressure-cooker! Martin was in, then he was out, then he was in - and Stewart's Out!! Yes!!!! I mean, not wanting to go all schandenfraude or anything, but dude - he so deserved to not make the cut. And now the pressure starts!
Something strange about it, but over the years, I've come to hate NASCAR less and less. It's actually becoming kind of interesting for me. Next year, I might even pick a driver and follow along. who knows? I'm leaning towards Stewart, because he's gonna be pissed all year. Anyways, just wanted to share.
I know this thread is pretty much dead now but I can't help it.... Jeff Burton wins! Holy shit those last 50 or so laps were tense. I just kept yelling at the TV "go in hard! go in hard go dammit!" But he finally pulled it off. 175 races since his last win. Pheonix, 2001. Jesus. Now he's finally back in contention. When he moved to RCR a few years ago and he started getting better I figured he would win a race. Then this year came when he made the Chase for Nextel Cup I KNEW he was going to win one before the year finished. It's about fucking time!
Man that was a fantastic race! I think Dover is my favourite track. Amazing that Burton's now leading the points, good for him. I figured when Harvick's engine blew that was going to be it for Burton. Loved how Burton and Kenseth raced each other clean, it was brilliant stuff.
As mush as I have a distate for Tony Stewart, I'll give him that win. That was something to able to coast from turn two all the way around and still take it home. Though to be fair Casey Mears did say he was running out of gas as well.

My main gripe is that Gordon is pretty much done now for the Chase. Unless he finishes great next weekend, he's done. I guess I'll have to put on my Burton hat soon.
I'll give credit to Tony, but really he only won the race because he's not in the championship and so had nothing to lose. Okay so I'm still bitter. Damn shame about Gordon, but on the bright side - Mark Martin got third place!! yEs!
How about that Talladega race? What a finish. And when Gordon was knocked out earlier I thought he was done but after Burton had those tire problems almost everyone is back in contention. 10th place is only 185 points out.
Martin up to third! And whatever guardian angel Burton's had tied up in his trunk seems to have escaped.

Talladega's such a wierd race. I actually dozed off earlier, but the last third was dynamite. I heard Lowes Speedway is hiring more guards in anticipation of Vickers' reception by the teeming masses. Dale took it pretty well, but Brian likely just got himself elected the Vader of Nascar for that one.
Fuck.

Gordon's done.

Yay for Jeff Burton - 2006 Nextel Cup Champion. Not yet... but he will be come Nov 19th.
This is such a cruel sport. Martin actually had the championship lead ever so briefly. He has a bad pit stop and I'm like 'No, no, no, no'. Then Burton can't get his car started and I'm like 'Yes, yes, yes.' Then a caution comes out, and Martin's been knocked head first into the wall. Arrrgh.
Yeah seeing Martin hit like that was a total blow. He is THE BEST driver to have never won a championship. No doubt about it.
Ward Burton makes his return this weekend. Driving the #4 Lucas Oil car. So he'll be out 50 laps into the race. Team Red Bull or Michael Waltrip Racing should have hired him. But I would assume Toyota doesn't want two drivers wrecking cars every week. At least they have a shot at a top ten finish every now and then with Dale Jarrett.

Jeff Gordon starts second this Sunday and with seven wins at this track he's the favourite to win. Too bad since he's pretty much done for the championship. I also believe now that Jimmie Johnson will be the new Mark Martin when it comes to the championship points race.
Wow.

The Chase just completly changed. These next four races are going to be exciting points wise. Too bad for Burton and the engine problems. That blows. Good day for Gordon though, made up some points and now Johnson might actually get to win a championship!

After: Subway 500 (4 races to go)

1. Matt Kenseth
2. Kevin Harvick -36
3. Jimmie Johnson -41
4. Denny Hamlin-47
5. Jeff Burton-48
6. Dale Earnhardt Jr. -94
7. Mark Martin-96
8. Kasey Kahne-99
9. Jeff Gordon-141
10. Kyle Busch-171
I just remembered a really great quote from the NBC broadcast on Sunday.

Wally Dallenbach: The drivers are a lot friendlier when they're running up front.
Bill Weber: And how would you know?

Zing!

Allmendinger joining Toyota in NASCAR
http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dl...1024029/-1/RSS

Quote:
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A.J. Allmendinger became the latest open-wheel defector today when the Champ Car driver signed a deal to drive for Team Red Bull in NASCAR.

The 25 year old signed a multiyear deal to drive the No. 84 Camry, and completes a lineup that already includes 23-year-old Brian Vickers, who announced in June he was joining the team.
“A.J. has the talent, guts and ambition to be successful in any form of motorsports,” TRB general manager Marty Gaunt said. “He has proven to be one of America’s top young race car drivers in open-wheel racing, and we are confident he can accomplish the same in stock car racing over time.”

A former Toyota Atlantic champion and former Champ Car rookie of the year, Allmendinger kick-started his career earlier this season when he was fired by the RuSport team. He was snapped up within days by Forsythe Championship Racing and scored his first career victory that weekend.

He went on to win three straight, and five overall this season, and is currently second in the Champ Car standings.

“I’m really excited about this next challenge in my racing career,” Allmendinger said. “To race against some of the best drivers in the world in front of fans that are as enthusiastic about racing as I am is going to be a pretty big thrill.”

Allmendinger began exploring his options in NASCAR late this summer, and ran two Truck Series events for Bill Davis Racing. He finished 13th in New Hampshire in September and was fifth earlier this month at Talladega.

Red Bull officials kept tabs on his efforts, then chose him to join Vickers as the fresh faces of their upstart organization. The team also hired crew chief Rick Viers, who guided Allmendinger during the two Truck races.

TRB is one of three teams that will field Toyota’s next season in the automaker’s debut, but TRB is the only one starting from scratch.

“I know this is going to be a lot of work in the upcoming months, but I couldn’t be happier to do it with Team Red Bull,” Allmendinger said. “Hopefully, we can all go out and deliver a good show.”

TRB hopes to give Allmendinger his Nextel Cup debut Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, but was awaiting NASCAR approval because Allmendinger has never competed on a superspeedway before.

The team had been scheduled to field a Dodge for Bill Elliott in a three-race trial run aimed at practicing pit stops and getting at-track experience. But they asked Elliott, who failed to qualify the car at Charlotte two weeks ago, to step aside and allow Allmendinger to run at Atlanta and Texas.

Several other Champ Car drivers have ventured into NASCAR, including Paul Tracy, Allmendinger’s teammate at Forsythe, who has driven in several Busch events.

Formula One star Juan Pablo Montoya, a former champion in Champ Car, is making his NASCAR debut in Saturday’s Busch race in Memphis and will run a full Nextel Cup schedule next season.
I was just about to post that. Interesting that F1 star Jaun Montoya is headed to the Cup series next year and now Allmendinger. Paul Tracy has run a few events and who knows if he'll ever end up in it. It'll be interesting to see how these guys pan out next season.
There's also rumours of F1-refugee Villeneuve going to Nascar as well.

This is one crazy chase. Of all the cars to drop out early, it was the points leader Burton. Now even the re-unwritten off Johnson is back in the frame.
So what was that thing that came out of Robby Gordon's car? I missed what the announcers were saying. I missed the last 30 or so laps of the race. I'd have to see the replay again but it did look like it came from the drivers window. And I like how Robby went to hide after the race and Dave Burns had to track him down. NASCAR officials will be up all night with this one.

As for the points well it looks to be a three man race right now. Kenseth, Johnson and Hamlin. Too bad for Burton. This would have been his only chance to win a title. Who wants to bet he doesn't make the Chase next year? And God damn Jeff Gordon. As soon as things seem to be going good some shit goes down and hurts there chances to make up points.

Ugh.
It didn't look like rollbar padding to me, but Burton and the commentators seemed adamant that 'someone' threw some padding out the window to get a caution, possibly in order to then get the lucky dog. After the race (dude, you missed the last 30 laps?) they showed the footage and then (hilariously) had Dave Burns chase after Robby and interrogate him, who did appear to be trying to escape. It's hard to tell, but it looked more like Robby's car drove over something on the track.

Shame about Gordon's race, that sun angle is a real problem in day/night races. Damn shame about Martin... Good job by Earnhardt and Stewart, though.
I came back in time to see Stewart climbing the fence. I saw the rest after that including Rollbargate!
Well I'll be damned. And they fined the crew chief as well, that'll learn him.
Hard luck for Jeff Burton. I was really starting to root for him to take home the Cup. I don't think he'll be back in this position ever again. I think he'll go the route of Sterling Marlin circa 2002 but he won't suck as much and he still be slightly competitive.

And Jeff Gordon is done. 157 points back. Nothing he can do. Not with the way Johnson is running. Speaking of Johnson... well it looks like he just might take it home. However with the way the Chase has been going so far it's still anyones to win.

After: Dickies 500 (Two races to go)

1. Jimmie Johnson
2. Matt Kenseth-17
3. Dale Earnhardt Jr.-78
4. Denny Hamlin-80
5. Kevin Harvick -105
6. Jeff Gordon-157
7. Jeff Burton-184
8. Kyle Busch-233
9. Mark Martin-253
10. Kasey Kahne-290

I'd say it's a three man race at this point.
Three if JR gets ALOT of help.
Man, Stewart is showing everybody up at the moment, that's got to be frustrating. Looks like Johnson is peaking at exactly the right time of the year.
Hopefully the second time is a charm:

Gordon, Vandebosch trade vows in Mexico
Aw. That's sweet.
It's the only thing he hasn't won at.

zing!
Wow. I can't believe the turn around Jimmie Johnson and the 48 team have done. Ever since that 24th place finish at Charlotte a few weeks ago their finishes have been: 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 2nd and 2nd. Amazing. They went from 8th in the points and basically out of contention to first. All he needs to do is finish 12th or better next week and he finally wins a championship!

And for the first time since the Chase began five drivers are eligible to win it. If Johnson has problems next week I can only hope Hamlin doesn't win it. I don't feel Earnhardt Jr. deserves it. They didn't do much all year except turn themselves around from last year but I wouldn't say they've done anything impressive.

After: Checker Auto Parts 500 (drivers in bold are in contention; drivers not in bold are mathematically eliminated)

1. Jimmie Johnson
2. Matt Kenseth-63
3. Kevin Harvick -90
4. Denny Hamlin-90
5. Dale Earnhardt Jr. -115

6. Jeff Gordon-167
7. Jeff Burton-225
8. Mark Martin-273
9. Kasey Kahne-319
10. Kyle Busch-359
It's pretty amazing seeing the 48 team pull themselves up like that. I think he definitely deserves the championship this year too. With that big a lead, a lot of the pressure's going to be off Jimmie at Homestead next week, and that always helps. i wonder if we'll get some real emotion out of him if he wins the championship.
So Jimmie Johnson took it home.

With the way they ran in those final six races they deserved it. 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd and 9th. Wicked.

Interesting notes for next year:

- Changes to the Chase?

- Juan Montoya, how will he do?

- Car of Tomorrow, how will it fare?

- Toyota entering the Cup series, how will they do?
Yay for Jimmie and the 48 team!

As far as Juan's concerned, I think the guy is totally suited to oval racing, and so he'll do well in that aspect. But Nascar is as much 'political' as it is mechanical, and Juan may have many more run ins with other drivers who resent some F1 hotshot trying to come into 'their' series. Should be interesting.

I'm a bit concerned about the car of tomorrow, as I think I read somewhere it has a lot more downforce than current cars. If that's the case then it's possible Nascar could go down the same wrong road F1 went down years ago: too much downforce creating turbulence, making it impossible for the cars to follow close through a corner. Nascar have to make sure the cars can still draft and race each other, or else the entire attraction of the series could be in jeopardy.

The drivers aren't really like that. Tony Stewart was an open wheel guy and Jeff Gordon loved open wheel racing. They'll bump him around a bit but it will be a "Welcome to NASCAR" type of bumping. I can just wait until he drives Bristol and gets mangled.

A lot of crew members, drivers and owners aren't a fan of the COT. It seems wierd to me and I don't see why they just couldn't modify the cars they have now. Add restrictor plates to more tracks (differant sizes of course), make the spoiler bigger, add a smaller fuel cell for al tracks, make sure every track has the SAFER barriers. Enforce excessivly rough driving with excessive fines in both money and points. $25,000 fine for a Nextel Cup driver? Come on! They make double that when they take a sip of Coke on the TV.

The COT will be very interesting and so will Toyota's appearence. But I think Toyota will be the new Dodge. They won't do much. I mean come on... look who they're drivers are: Michael Waltip, Dale Jarrett and Brian Vickers.

Gordon's wife pregnant: Due date early July

December 13, 2006
01:50 PM EST (18:50 GMT)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- On Wednesday, Jeff Gordon announced that wife Ingrid Vandebosch is pregnant.

"We're obviously very excited," Gordon said in a statement that appeared on his Web site. "Christmas came early for us this year.

"This is a very special gift for us -- one that we're both looking forward to. The due date is early July, and Ingrid and I can't wait to be parents.

"We've known for a little while, but we couldn't wait any longer to share the good news with our friends and fans."

Gordon, 35, married Vandebosch in a small, private ceremony in Mexico on Nov. 7.

Gordon and Vandebosch have been together since 2004. They appeared in the movie Taxi, in which the 37-year-old model played a bank robber and Gordon made an uncredited cameo appearance at her invitation.

Gordon announced his engagement to Vandebosch in Sonoma, Calif., in June and then won the Nextel Cup race the next day.
Yay for Gordon! Thank Christ he didn't have a kid with his first wife! That would have been a fucked up child.
