2006 NFL Off-season (FA, Draft, etc.) - Page 8

ya know you can be a good player and still be overrated.
Yeah, but you should also pause from calling a guy overrated because he didn't have a good senior bowl. The senior bowl is fucking worthless.
well tell my why he's so great? vandy respectable. yes 11 wins in 4 years wreak respectability. cutler was a highly touted qb when the season ended but he wasn't in the same class as young and leinart. somehow his pathetic senior bowl week and the combine made his stock go up. well i watched both and 1) the senior bowl - he was dreadful, and 2) the combine - he ran fairly well (something like a 4.75 40), did 25 reps on the bench press (amazing for a qb but he's not an offensive linemen who needs to show strength), showed a strong arm (like many of the kids have), and he missed a ton of throws. everyone was making excuses for the guy. i've never seen anything like it in my life. "oh he's so pumped up he let that one sail away from the receiver". well fuck, you could say that about any kid but cutler was getting special treatment for some unknown reason. cutler has 1st round talent not top 10. working out shouldn't have made half the teams suddenly believe he's better then matt leinart. the point isn't that he had a bad senior bowl it's that somehow miraculously it started the jay cutler hype machine. it's mind boggling to me. mike mayock's undying love for anything named cutler didn't hurt either.

He was a QB at Florida, but could never get any playing time behind Grossman, etc. So he played WR and was the punter. When Chris Leak got there, he decided that there was no way he'd ever get to be QB, so he transferred to Furman, and suddenly was one of the best QBs in I-AA. I think he threw for about 3,000 yards and 20 TDs in 2005.

Saw that the Steelers picked up Cedric Humes out of Va. Tech with their last pick as well. Not a bad pick up.

Here's the Sporting News' grade of Chicago, Anya:

Quote:
30. Chicago: Danieal Manning didn't have the grades to stick at Nebraska and that's why he became a star at Abilene Christian, returning three turnovers for TDs and also six punt-kicks for touchdowns. Has raw ability and was such a good cornerback that opponents quit throwing his way. Manning will immediately be a star on special teams. That being said, we don't understand why the Bears would select another returner (Devin Hester) with their second overall pick? The Bears might win the NFC North, but they aren't that good to be trading out of the first round simply to save money. They could have taken a tight end, upgrading a position that has been weak ever since Mike Ditka played. We all thought the Bears needed some offense. Grade: D
The Steelers got a C (#20), which I guess is supposed to be average. The Falcons got a D, just above Chicago at #29.

Ignore the way QB's actually play - just look at the combine and senior bowl, baby! Ingle Martin is solid, but Cutler is overrated...words that only could come from someone who cares way to much about how well players do in shorts.

Cutler did very well at the combine as well, hence his rocket shot up the draft boards from the end of the season to #12 overall.

People seem to be discounting the Bucs' draft because they didn't take any of the sexy names that showed up in mocks (Justice, McNeil, etc), when they actually filled in quite a few needs. I've read Davin Joseph's diary at the Sporting News and the transcript of his press conference today, and aside from his physical talents, the man oozes intelligence and commitment. Trueblood is a beast (who man-handled Mario Williams last year) who just needs some pass-blocking work to really blossom. But these two picks give us depth on the offensive line (which was a huge issue during training camp last year as too few guys ended up taking too many reps) and allow us to move returning players back to natural positions.

Then we get Stovall, a Keyshawn-style receiver who fits Gruden's offense perfectly, a perfect Cover 2 corner in Alan Zamaitis, some good young tight end depth (essential for Gruden's two tight end sets) and some more defensive depth.

It's not filled with star power, but it certainly makes the team better.

Grades are pointless because nobody knows how well any of the playes do.

I just hate the draft because they took 2 kick return specalists when they needed a TE. Angelo makes this bull shit argument that they haven't had one since Ditka. That's like saying we haven't had a really good QB since McMahon so don't get one. Oh wait, they are doing that too.

So some friends of mine and I were discussing the draft, and this off-the-wall conspiracy theory came up, initially as a joke, but then one of us started buying into it.

Anyway, the theory goes that the league put pressure on Houston not to take Reggie Bush so that he'd land in New Orleans and give the team and the city a shot in the arm.

Not that I lend any credence to it (I think the league would rather have the Saints fail in New Orleans to have an excuse for them to move to LA), but it makes a kind of twisted sense, especially when you see that 15,000 Bush Saints jerseys have already been sold.

IMO you can grade on overdrafting, but that's about it.

do you have a learning disability in comprehending people's words? really, i said cutler is good but he's overrated. i would bet my life that you have never seen more then 2 games from him so shut the fuck you media puppet. "cutler good, vandy=respect!" what did michael smith tell you that one? you were probably the same guy a few years ago raving about kyle boller. the senior bowl isn't in shorts by the way. it's a live game against senior all stars so get a clue. i said cutler is overrated because people somehow think he did great at the combine and senior bowl when he didn't. he was terrible in the one where you actually play and solid but not spectacular in "shorts". the funny thing is you think i'm all over these combine guys (ummm jay cutler) which could be further from the truth. learn your shit before you talk. 11 wins in 4 years. what a stud who "rose his team above!". jesus christ this guy is basically andrew walter with a little more mobility who unfortunately happened to be on an inferior team instead so that must make him a 1st round pick instead of a 3rd. raiders vs broncos, walter vs cutler afc championship game in 3 years. michael huff will roam all over 'em! mark it down!

where did i say ingle martin is this elite qb? i was just letting chavez know that martin has the physical tools to be an nfl qb and that they're probably better off with him then basanez. so of course that must mean i think he's the next tom brady.

Jeez, now Lelie is threatening to sit out the whole season for Denver after they traded for Javon Walker. "Wahh! Competition! Me no likey!"

Also read that Robert Gallery is moving to left tackle, and that Pittsburgh wanted to trade for TJ Duckett, but Atlanta wants a freakin' 3rd round pick for him. Yeah, good luck with that.

EDIT: And Marcus Vick is going to Miami's rookie camp. Maybe he can keep Ricky Williams company during the 2006 season.
Trent Dilfer for Ken Dorsey. Ok Dilfer isn't Peyton Manning or McNabb or anything but the guy is a solid experienced QB. So its now Dorsey and Charlie Frye. What gives?
Frye looked pretty good last year, all things considered.

My dynasty league's rookie draft starts today. I'm 1.13 out of 1.15 in the first round--I'll probably be taking AJ Hawk or Ernie Sims. I need a WR, but there ain't much out there. I may try to take Jennings from Green Bay with my 2nd pick.

EDIT: Well, I finally get to my first round pick - Greg Jennings, Green Bay, WR. I traded out of the 2nd round for an additional (and higher) 3rd round pick. The 3 LBs I wanted are all gone, so I traded down.

Picked Bobby Carpenter at 3.02 and traded my 3.08 and Marcel Shipp for Keyshawn Johnson. Now alongside Laveraneus Coles and David Givens (plus some backups), I'm pretty much set at WR. I'll be drafting for LBs and DBs the rest of the draft. With my team, I could pretty much not draft anyone else, and I think I'd be OK for the 2007 season. I've got Big Ben and Tom Brady as my QBs, Julius Jones/Marion Barber and Deshaun Foster/Eric Shelton (no D. Williams) as my RBs, the WRs I mentioned, and Heath Miller (plus a probably draft pick or FA pickup) as my TE. I need to pick up depth at LB and DB now.

And Marcus Vick is officially a Dolphin. Saban is becoming the Al Davis of the East Coast as far as taking in the "strays" of the NFL.

Oh, next two picks in my draft:

Jimmy Williams, DB, Atlanta
Antonio Cromartie, DB, San Diego (I ended up with a surprise 2nd pick in the 4th round, so I took a chance on Cro).

Next up in the 5th round, I'll probably take a safety or LB.

Looks like McNair is finally going to the Ravens, pending physical. Man, the Titans really screwed around with him.
