That totally fucking sucks. He's awesome. (or was) Another great character actor has left us.

If I'd been usurped by Stuart Townsend, I'd probably die as well.

That doesn't bode well for Tom Cruise then...
I loved McGavin in Christmas Story, he was always my favorite part of that film. I was mostly unaware of his other work, but after reading his obit, I'll have to check it out.

Completely agree with that. His screaming in the basement always cracked me up.

Surprised no one's mentioned his work as Kolchak, or even Billy Madison's father yet.

A fine character actor, one not known for tabloid garbage. Just his work. I'm willing to bet he was a class act behind the scenes.

That seems like a Night Stalker reference to me.

From the news story that begat the thread:

Best known, by us, as Carl Kolchak THE NIGHT STALKER...

I thought I read somewhere a few years ago that Darren McGavin was not in the best of health, but this still came as somewhat of a shock. "The Night Stalker" series was in it's initial run on TV when I was a kid. I don't know why my parents let us kids watch it, because it always scared the crap out of me. For years I was terrified of showers with doors instead of curtains, and the sound of a motorcycle driving down the street while I was lying in bed trying to sleep ensured many sleepless nights. I wouldn't miss an episode though. My dad gave me the series on DVD for Christmas. I need to have a Night Stalker marathon next weekend.

On a related note, my brother gave my dad a leglamp for Christmas. He said it was made from the same mold as the one in "A Christmas Story". It was hilarious. It came in a crate marked "FRAGILE" (you know how to pronounce it), of course. My mom had better luck than Ralphie's mom, though. She got my dad to display it in his study...located in the attic.

RIP

Sucks to have to kee a treasure like that in the attic. Great conversation piece.
