Try this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000204SWE/

It's not multi-region out of the box, but I cracked mine in less than 2 minutes by pressing a few keys on my remote (see here for instructions). I bought mine at Target.

Also, I've heard that CyberHome DVD players are easy to crack. And they are quite afforable.

Oh, and welcome to States.

Yeah, the Cyberhome 320 is 50 dollars at places like Best Buy and Target. The remote-control hack is easy to find online. Its PAL conversion is a little stuttery but all in all it's a great deal. Buy a couple, because they do wear out.

I bought the MALATA DVP-580 from Buy.com about a year and a half ago and have had no problems.

thanks for the advice..

i`ll head out later and see if i can find any of these models.

You don't necessarily need to buy a new DVD player. Go to that link provided by moovyphreak and search for your current player. If you can't find that, then you should buy a new one.
I'll check that link by Molinaro, but I still wanted to ask. Anybody here picked up a portable DVD player that they've hacked to be region free? I was thinking about picking one up, but half of my collection is from other regions.

The cheapo $50 models are fine, but what about a premium model?

Bumping an old thread.

Since my current DVD player doesn't seem to have a hack that doesn't involve a Palm Pilot, I think I'm just going to buy a new player.

I've been looking around for a region-free, multi-format DVD player. After searching/reading the threads, I looked around for the Philips DVP642 player, but then stumbled across the Philips DVP5140/37 on Amazon. Most of the reviews seem positive, but I figured I'd throw this out there and see if anyone actually has this model and might vouch for it (or might have any other suggestions, as most of the threads seem to be a bit aged).

Thanks.

My DVD player just crapped out. Does anyone know anything about the DVP5960?

I mean, other than that the remote looks like crap?
I can recommend finding a used Toshiba SD-3900 on ebay. The region hack isn't quite as simple as a remote code, but all it involves is burning a file to a CD, and the Pal to NTSC is very very good. It will have a longer shelf life than a Cyberhome player. I think Cyberhome went out of business, so keep that in mind when buying a player..no warranty support unless its from where you bought it.

My DVP5140 just arrived today, and I gotta say it's pretty damn awesome. I made it region-free in about 10 seconds, and every type of media/technology I threw at it today was handled with ease (DVD-R. +R, CD-R, +R, DIVX, etc.). It's exactly what I was looking for, plus I got lucky as I ordered it on Thursday of last week when it was $50 shipped from Amazon (the price went up about 10 minutes after I ordered. Bizarre).

If you're willing to spend a little money and have the TV and speakers to go along with it, I highly recommend this player.

I'll second that. It's a really fantastic DVD player.

I am quite happy with my Philips DVP5140. It has more than its fair share of quirks, but the picture quality is quite good and it does play just about everything. However, now that I have an HDTV, I am looking to pick up the Oppo.

I think you'll really pleased if you do.

I love all its cool features, the upconversion, etc.

Excellent, thanks.

See, I'd spring for the Oppo, but since I know I won't be getting a HDTV in the near future, I think I'd be better off popping the $50 for the Philips. I figure by the time I get around to affording a HDTV, the technology for the HD-DVD/BluRay/DVD players will have a) shaken out and b) have gotten even better.

At least that's what I keep telling myself.

Well, I just came back from vacation, and my DVP642 was dead. We've had so many storms here, I assume it got hit by lightning (although nothing else on the power strip has any issues). I ordered the DVP5960 since I'm about to upgrade my TV to an HDTV. Didn't want to spend the $$ for the Oppo, since I just wanted the upconversion ability and the region-free ability.

I've bought 3 of the cyberhomes. They're great for what they are. I've got one at home, got one for my mom, and one for a friend in the last few years. Never a problem, and it's easy to change regions on. Supercheap, like $40 including shipping from amazon and $50 in stores, I think. If you don't need special features, or want a portable region free to take to friends houses or on trips, it's great.(It's not a portable in watch on the plane way, but in a "easy to carry up 3 flights of apartment stairs" way).

I really like my Philips DVP5140 since I don't have an HDTV. Takes a long time to start up, though.
After a short period of searching, I found out what my issue on my 642 was--apparently these models have a habit of blowing a capacitor, but they can be easily replaced (supposedly). I'm going to have a crack at it and see if I can fix it.

As for Cyberhome, I've got one upstairs, and quite frankly, it's terrible. It only plays about 50% of the DVDs I put in it, and it freezes from time to time. If I can fix the 642, I'm going to put it upstairs and sell the Cyberhome on eBay or something.
UPDATE: Well hot damn, I actually fixed my 642. I bought an $8 soldering iron and a $2 capacitor, and replaced the bad one on the board. It took about 15 minutes to do the actual replacement, and about 30-45 minutes between removing the cover and the circuit board, then replacing it all. Needless to say, I patted myself on the back several times after it started working.

So, I put it back on my non-HDTV, and when I get the new player today, I'm going to replace my shitty Cyberhome with it. When we get the HDTV downstairs, I'll either move the new one down there, or maybe I'll spring for a PS3 or something like the Oppo.

Ok, I swear I'm done with this...got the 5960 player today and de-regionized it, tried out a Region 2 DVD and no problemo. Picture looks pretty sharp. I'll mess around with it later to tweak the picture. I'm watching the Simpsons on it now, which I know is not much of a test, but it still looks pretty damn good.

Thanks for bumping this thread. I have a 642 that I've been using for about a year that I never bothered to hack. I actually have a reason to now, with the copy of Revolver I borrowed from Matchstick.

Anyway, one secret code entered, and I'm ready to rock!

Well, if you ever get the flashing power led of death, let me know. I can fix it for you.
