The Chicago Cubs March to the 2006 World Series - Page 2

FYI, according to Mark McGuire (some Tribune Company high-level suit), those holes in the fence aren't open during the games. You can look through them to see the field when there's no game going on, however.

There is a green screen that is somewhat see through. The showed it on the game and you could see the people on the other side.
I would hope that they eliminate the screen completely. I mean, they can't think they're losing business if they let people take turns looking into a few eye holes. I believe in San Fran they have something similar, and have someone around to make sure no one stays there for more than half an inning. It's a cool idea that's pretty much useless the way it's set up now.

I doubt that's the reason. I can only think they don't want fans on the street being a distraction. I suppose a car driving by could be a distraction too. They can't control it as well. It's stupid because other parks have picnic areas and fans are right up against the fence. I say put Ronnie Woo Woo there when the Cubs bat. He'll drive the RF nuts.
Good point. I'd rather have Ronnie Woo Woo bugging the shit out of an opposing player than the rest of the fans in the stadium, as he does now. Seriously, they need to stop selling that guy tickets.

Either Ronnie is let in for free or someone gives him a SRO ticket.

Cubs win 3-1
Despite 3 Cub errors they beat the Cards. A pinch hit HR into the wind for Barrett and a solo shot by Lee got the win. And the new bleachers may be the reason. The announcers are saying that even with the wind blowing in 20+mph if you hit a line drive the new bleachers block the wind enough to get it ou. hit it over the bleachers and it's an out.

Cubs get Ponson tomowwow. Hopefully Marshall will kill the nerves because Ponson is a bum.

And get Pittsburg to town fast. They are really brutal. After 3 w/ cincy they get the Bucs in Pitt. Unfortunatly the Cubs only get them 5 times in the 1st half

Sweep
You would think sweeping the Cardnials would be more exciting, but take out Carpenter, Pujlos and Rolen and this isn't a very good team. Their bullpen is shit. It's so shitty LaRussa brought in Izzy in the 8th with a runner on 1st and no outs. He walks Lee, Ramirez on 8 pitches them Berrett hits a grand slam. It's too early to bring in your closer in the 8th esp. when you have a game the next day.

The Cards/Brewers series this week should tell alot about which of those 2 teams will be contenders.

Lee gets new deal
5 years/65 million with a no trade clause and this years contract is thrown out. So basically a 4 year extension. A 10 am press conference is going on tomorrow.

Cubs have 2 decent 1b prospects that should move to outfield or trade 1. Sing looked good but he won't make the Cubs ever now. Dopriak is young enough to take over when Lee retires.

Hendry also re-upped a few days ago. I'd still wait on Dusty.

It's really early but

Chi Cubs 4 1 .800 -
Houston 5 2 .714 -
Milwaukee 5 2 .714 -
Cincinnati 4 2 .667 0.5
St. Louis 4 3 .571 1.0
Pittsburgh 1 7 .125 4.5

Magic number is alot(157).

Watching the highlights was brutal, the game had to be torture. Rusch needs a pitch to get lefties out.

A few small injuries
Ramirez and Jones. Jones tweeked a hammy and Ramirez has a butt problem.
Quote:
Ramirez has a strained muscle on the left side of his buttocks which affects the external rotation on his swing. The third baseman felt it on his last at-bat in the eighth inning on Tuesday, and it could have been from overswinging.
hopefully a couple days off will help.

With Ramirez out Barrett will bat clean up today which turned out to be a good move. Maddux continued his great start by going 6 innings and striking out 7.

Pierre Stole 2 and got the Cubs their 1st run with a bunt single, stole 3rd and scored on a throwing error. Scoring w/out a hit his huge for the Cubs.

5-2 start for the Cubs. Zambrano vs Eric "I like to give up HR's" Milton. Need to take the series.
Thread Starter
Take Ramirez, Jones, Walker, and Barrett out of the Cubs line up and they aren't that good. Still if Zambrano stepped up they could have won. Hopefully a stopp in Pitt with a healthy line up will cure the Red losses.

7-4

Well despite a great pitched game by Zach Duke(2-1 loss) the Cubs took 2/3 from the AAA Pirates.

Though the Cubs should have swept it was nice to see Jerome Williams pitch well like he did the 2nd half of last year and Rusch settle down. The real test will come in a week when these 2 take on the Cards.

Dodger pitching probables
Maddux vs Tomko
Zambrano vs Lowe
Marshall vs Penny

Need Big Z to go 7 and give up less than 3. He's due to come around.

The 40 Year Old Veteran
I wish I could photoshop MAddux into that poster. Any takers?

8 innings pitched, 3 hits, 1 run, 0 walks, 6 strikeout. Add that to an RBI single and you have an early Cy Young frontrunner. I guess the personal trainer he got in the offseason helped.

And how about Todd Walker? All the guy does is hit for average and no steroid power and plays decent defense yet Nefi(gag) and Hairston(ok) were suppose to take his job.

He's only hitting .455 with 2HR and 8 RBI in the 2 slot. If Pierre gets hot and Walker stays hot they will score tons of runs.
Maddux has been the Maddux of old so far this season. If he can keep it up and you guys can get Prior and Wood back healthy relatively soon I think you actually have a 50-50 chance this year at winning the division seeing the Cards look a little older and weaker this year. (Well besides for Pujols)

The injury bug stikes again
Now the Cubs best player, Derrek Lee, will probably useless for the next month(at best) with a sprained(hope not broke) wrist. Even if a sprain it will take time to heal. 15 day dl him and bring up Sing.

Cubs took 2/3 from the Dodgers and are 4-2 on the 9 game road trip w/ 3 left w/ the Cards. And Lee killed the Cards hitting well over .400 against them the last 2 years.

FUCK.

It feels like being gutted
Quote:
Chicago Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee has two fractured bones in his left wrist, team general manager Jim Hendry said Thursday.

Lee will be in a cast for 6 weeks and likely will face 2-4 weeks of rehab after that, meaning the Cubs will be without one of their best hitters for 8-10 weeks.
so the Cubs have to replace a gold glove 1st baseman who hit 335, 46 homers and 107 RBI. Lee may never be the same hitter again.

I'm just sick about this. Cubs are playing like an actual team. They have a great bullpen and Maddux is his old self with Prior, Wood, and Miller on the horizon.

Time to raid Pittsburg or KC.

FUCK
Hard Luck thats a HUGE blow. If they want to stay in it they need to do something and do something fast. Maybe they should take a run at Soriano werent they interested before ,put him at 2nd and play Walker at first that way he will get regular at bats. The defense will suffer a fair bit but would will help make up losing Lee's bat. When Lee comes back Walker goes back to the bench and you have Lee and Soriano on the right side of the infield which aint too shabby. Or maybe not something as drastic try to get Craig Wilson off the Pirates when Casey comes back they really have no spot for him. That guy could hit 30-35 a full season in Wrigley.
How completely appropriate that the injury occurs just a week after he signs a huge contract extention. Never had injury problems before, the Cub sign him long term and he immediately goes down.

I will admit that I'm happy about this, though not for the reasons you'd think. I'm in a home run derby with 100+ people, and since most of them are from around here and are Cub fans, Derek Lee was on most people's ballot. This really helps me.
Zambrano breaking that bat was pretty darned funny. I haven't seen someone do it with such ease since Ken Caminiti, and we all know he was juiced up.

Rick Monday...You Made A Great Play...

2-2 since the Lee break. Hard to believe Maddux is pitching better than when he got 6-8 inches off the plate in the mid 90's with the Braves.

Angel Guzman will finally get his shot to start with him being called up and Williams down. Now if they can only bring up Sing at 1st, keep Walker at 2nd and leave Marbury and Nefi to sub duties.

Maddux 5-0 for first time in career
He is saving the Cubs asses. Maybe the Cubs will see that another 40+ year old pitcher can help them out. Cubs have a weak early schedule they could help them stay in it and maybee gain some ground till reinforcemets come.

Cedano is the goods at SS. He made a couple great plays to save the game. Fun to watch.

Guzman, Hill, and Marshall. All rookie pitchers and all in the starting rotation with Maddux and Zambrano. And Z is the worst so far this year. Though Marshall has started to pitch really good it was against the Fish and Pirates. They really don't count.

Cedano and Murton are both playing great. I say bring up Felix Pie and sit Jones.

Never thought I'd see the day when the Cubs had to bring in so many rookies.

5-6 w/ out Lee. 10-14 overall.
14-11 now. We lost 8-0 to frackin Pittsburg today. Last four games we have been outscored 33-1. Offense might be an issue.

Figured a loss with Zach Duke pitching, but w/out Lee the offense is a problem esp. when Ramirez isn't hot and Jones sucks right now.
I saw Vince Vaughn in the crowd. What a waste of a game to go to.
Fucking Zach Duke can't get anyone out this year but gets a complete game shutout, completely fucking my fantasy team. Dicks.
Without Lee, the Cubs are nearly helpless against LHP. It's mostly Hendry's fault in not having a right-handed bat on the bench that can platoon with Jones. Jones is 31 and has never been able to hit LHP, so why expect him to change now? Not to mention, why does a team need 4 middle infielders on the roster? The Cubs were in trouble if either of Ramirez or Lee got hurt, especially against lefties and it's poor roster construction on Hendry's part.

This team mentally quit when Lee got gurt. It's fucking sad to watch. Getting shut out or scoring 1 run in multiple games in a week is brutal with all this shitty pitching in the league.

And now Bonds. Figures like Big Mac it might happen against the Cubs. Thank you Juan Pierre. The only good thing you've done this year. A .275 OBP? That's Corey Patterson territory. Everyone has slow starts, but 6 weeks into the season is a major slump.

Bring up Pie now. Bring up Sing. This season is over. You can't win when you score 1 run in half your games. Maybe the kids will breath life into this team.

And Good Bye Dusty. Hendry got his extension. So did Lee. You are odd man out.

*And I hope Zambrano and his 95mph fastball hits Bonds in the ribs.
So, am I reading this right? Cubs down in the 9th by 5 runs and they manage to work Buehrle for all of 6 pitches? Don't expend yourself there.

I don't know why any of the teams ahead of the Cubs in the standings have to worry if they're going to pull stuff like that. Thankfully, I'm a Brewers fan. I'm going to enjoy this trainwreck.

michael barrett is a punk. toughen up and play your position.

that is all.

Nah he had the right idea....just went about it the wrong way. Piersyn...Piersjyns....ah hell with it and I'm not looking it up....anyways the Sox catcher is a dick and has a history of being a dick. He deserved something for showing Barrett up like that. But while it warmed my heart to see him get put down like a bitch....I realize that the correct thing to do would have been to have him plunked in the ass by the pitcher the next time up. That is safer and achieves the same effect.

As far as the Cubs overall situation....Baker is the problem, Hendry is problem and Rothschild is the problem. We aren't going to do anything this year...but I sure as hell hope we do an overhaul of the coaching staff and not the roster just yet. Though I would say it is time to get rid of Wood and Prior if they don't pan out this season. In fact I would even be tempted to jettison Wood regardless.
It was all a misunderstanding. If you saw the press conference, it makes a lot more sense.

Barrett thought AJ was coming towards him, which AJ was, so Barrett attacked him first. Barrett said "I didn't even have the ball, bitch" and then wacked him.

Well, in reality AJ was going to pick up his helmet, which was behind Barrett. AJ had no intention of fighting. And this becomes clear when you see AJ trying to manuever away and pass by from Barrett. But that's when Barrett bearhugged him. It's funnier, because AJ thought Barrett grabbed him to see if he was okay, and was going to ask him the same back. But before he knew it, whammy.

All in all, still hilarious when watching on repeated viewings. 8.9/10.

When your team gives up and can't score for weeks you lose interest. Though it was still talked about in the MLB thread.

It did look like a misunderstanding esp. since AJ did lower his shoulder a bit to duck around Barrett.

Still a great shot by Barrett to a guy who deserved it. I'm sure many of AJ's forme teammates would be happy to pay the fine.

My best friend is a HUGE Cubs fan. Comes from Iowa, where all there is, is baseball. Well, he wants Baker gone and for Bob Brenley to be named head coach. Anyone else think that way?

Unfortunatly this year isn't BAker's fault, though I don't really like the guy. Pierre is just as bad as Patterson leading off(almost), Lost Lee, Prior, Wood, Murton is slumping and no power yet, Jones in Left is horrible with a 3 year deal, and Ramirez is hitting under .230

You still need the players. Time to bring up Pie and Sing and let them play. Trade Pierre for a top tie prospect, keep the bullpen, and if wood stays he signs an incentive filled contract. no play, no pay. Jones will be untradeable, but dump Nefi Perez if possible.
I don't think Jones is untradeable. Obviously he needs a platoon partner and the Cubs had no business signing an average player like him to 3 years (they need to shoot for stars or one year stop gaps), but he's probably still worth $3 to $4 million a year.

I don't see Pierre fetching much at this time. What contender needs him? Wrigley is probably not the best fit for Pierre. Long infield grass combined with cozy dimensions limit the gaps for him to hit singles. Without a high batting average, he doesn't bring much to the table.

I'd agree that Hendry deserves probably more blame than Baker this year. The Cubs have one superstar, a few above average players (Ramirez, Walker, and Barrett), some average to below average players, and a poorly designed bench. And Hendry didn't address the starting pitching depth issues when he signed Miller. Part of that is reflecting Baker's preferences, Dusty likes versatile veterans that hack at everything, but Hendry sure didn't approach the season with any safeguards.

Barrett gave him his best shot and AJ didn't flinch, let alone 'get put down'. Cub fans are very proud of the punch, but they don't seem to notice AJ barely moved.

I'm sure a lot of people were glad to see it and many would pay Barrett's fine, but I think AJ shrugs off the hatred from other players when he looks at his World Series Championship ring.

Yeah, AJ was on PTI, and they asked him if he felt anything since there was no injury or bruise or nothing. AJ said 'not really'. Nice.

I could have sworn I saw him go down, perhaps he didn't...but take a look at any of the pictures and you do see the bastards head get the old Rocky Bolboa snap. To say he didn't flinch is pushing it. And I'm sure the guy is going to go on National TV and tell everyone it hurt. Of course he will say it didn't.

Jimminy Cricket on a fucking cracker is it time to just put Kerry Wood out to pasture. Reportedly he is going to miss his scheduled start on sunday vs. the Braves (due to soreness). Rothschild says this is standard procedure after a surgery. I say it is a load of crap considering he has pitched all of 10 innings total. Prior and Wood are mindfucked more than anything. Get rid of them. For the love of God...get rid of them both.
