Brian Keene's The Conqueror Worms

Review here!

LOVED this book. It was originally released as The Earthworm Gods by Delirium Books, but I didn't catch that one. This paperback's coming out in a couple months... if you dug The Rising, you'll dig this. Just more great writings of the apocalypse.

No Keene fans here? I've only read The Rising and City of the Dead by him, and thought they were both great, although obviously Rising is better in every way.

I keep hearing good things about Terminal- want to check that out. I really think Keene's one of the best horror authors to come out in recent years.

i haven't caught 'the rising' or 'city of the dead' but i did read 'terminal'. it was good but it was by no means a horror story. for the most part it was pretty straight forward with a tad of supernatural within it. i'm glad to hear the rest of his shit is good.

I haven't read any of his stuff, but he was nice enough to give a quote for the cover of my friend's first novel. I just might have to give this a look. Should I get The Rising first?

Be reading this. I met Keene at a horror con here in Toronto last year, and he seemed a very decent fellow. His writing skills are established.

I've been tracking The Rising, and could finally order it through Barnes and Nobles.com last week, because all the others are sold out.

Amazing how this book is hard to get.

Well Conqueror Worms doesn't come out till May- so yeah, you should check out The Rising. I liked that the best of all of his work I've read so far, anyways...

I just received "Take The Long Way Home", a novella by him.... I'll put up a review as soon as I get to it.

And The Rising is getting turned into a movie and a video game...the man's got a lot of stuff coming out soon.

The Rising is also available at Cornwall Books via ValoreBooks. I ordered it and City of the Dead this morning.

Order from his website, and he'll write any dirty thing you want on it.

Yeah but neither Shocklines nor Clarksworld have The Rising in stock. But I would recommend getting everything else that way.

On a side note, anyone read that online zombie series, Autumn, or something?

Review of Keene's Take The Long Way Home is up!

As for Autumn, I keep hearing about it, but haven't gotten around to checking it out yet- anyone read it?

I'm right near the climax for Terminal right now, and damn this book is great. It's his least horror-themed- but it's good to see that he can write about other stuff besides the apocalypse... not that I doubted it. Terminal's really got some heavy issues in it.

The Rutting Season is his next one out (the man's got a lot of shit coming out!) and I really can't wait. I can't remember the last time I've geeked out over an author like this.

Just thought this was a really fucking cool cover-

I really liked this book. Those that complained it was two novellas pushed together I think are missing the point. He had two horror stories to tell and they merged in the same world, what's the big deal?

I've since read The Rising and City of the Dead. Enjoyed them both, but not as much as Conqueror Worms. His new novel sounds like a rehash of the two zombie books, hope I'm wrong. Oh, and I read Ghoul. It was like Stand by Me with a ghoul. Decent read, but not worth recommending.

SPOILER below...

***SPOILER***
Gotta give this guy credit, he sure as hell doesn't go for the happy ending in his books. I really liked the endings to both City of the Dead and Conqueror Worms. I'm curious if his publisher is pushing him for a Worms sequel and even if he did where he can take the story.

I'd love to read a continuation of the City of the Dead storyline where Ob and friends take on God. That is the only natural progression of that storyline IMHO.

Lastly, I did read at one time that all of his books are connected somehow. So that's interesting setup for future novels.

I love all of his stuff so far. Nice breezy reads on a lazy Sunday. I really enjoyed worms. The way he incorporated nautical myths was fantastic. Would love to see The Rising and City of The Dead done as a miniseries on Showtime or HBO. And Worms would be a hell of a movie.

I agree with the complaints about it being 2 stories squashed together. I love the parts with the old man in the mountain, but the "previously published novella" part in the city (seen first in Fear of Gravity) I never really thought was all that great. Would have much preferred to just have the whole story take place where it starts. But, the beginning is strong enough to recommend the whole thing

Well, it wasn't exactly the smoothest transition into the second story. They meet these new characters and it's like "Hey! Tell me a story!" and they go through the whole process of introducing new characters, settings and such. Not that it's a bad story, it's just jarring to be thrown into another book in the middle of another. Very cool to see how the world was affected in another place, though.

It's also annoying that the book is, ostensibly, the memoirs of an old guy and, therefore, written in the first person, but suddenly switches over to another character's first person narration. It's incredibly clumsy in the execution and I found that it took me out of the novel. Apparently, the old guy had a photographic memory and was able to record the second narration word for word. The Conqueror Worms would have been better served by being two short novellas within the same cover.

That being said, Worms and City have put me off Keene. Are any of his subsequent efforts worth checking out?

ETA: Um, or what Alex said.
