What's that Chris Carter doing?

X-Files is over. A sequel to Fight the Future was promised, but I haven't heard any news lately.

Millennium: cancelled.

Harsh Realm: cancelled.

The Lone Gunmen: cancelled.

IMDb says the last thing Chris Carter was involved in was writing the treatment to an X-Files video game that came out in 2004 and some interviews for DVD extras.

Where's Chris Carter?

I heard he got stung by some bees, then abducted into the light. But the government totally covered it up.

In my opinion he should let Mulder and Scully rest in peace and focus on other projects.

I heard that he bought into his own hype and thought that he was actually creative when in reality he was just riding off the coat tails of his producers and writing staff who did more with X-files than his Navajo/alien/government conspiracy laden episodes.

Yeah, there was a fascinating article about Chris Carter somewhere in the internet. Basically, all the good ideas in The X-Files and in Millennium were from other writers and producers. Carter just took all the credit. After some googling I managed to find the article, http://www.the11thhour.com/archives/...s/carter1.html.

That pretty much confirms my feelings about the whole thing. When you look at what Carter was able to accomplish on his own, he doesn't look good. And I'm convinced that, despite his rumblings otherwise, he didn't have the first clue what was really going on in that show. He just kept making up more stuff, and then trying to tie it all together after the fact. This is why Glen Morgan and James Wong have a movie career now, and Carter doesn't.

It's interesting that the article mentions Gene Rodenberry as a comparison, because many of the same things have been said about him; that he simply rode on the creativity of other, more talented people, and took the credit in endless interviews, turning himself into a celebrity in the process.

Harlan Ellison's book The City on the Edge of Forever is particularly scathing on the subject, and he has a lot of articles and interviews to back it up.
