Anyone else find this thing oddly compelling?

I found Raw Deal oddly compelling.

I don't know the show your talking about though.

RAW DEAL is quite compelling (RIP Darren McGavin).

I guess "Deal or No Deal" is a game show but you don't really need to have any knowledge except a very basic concepts of odds. Still, for some reason it works.

It's like televised crack cocaine for me. I'm freaking sucked in and addicted. It's so deceptively simply and incredibly entertaining.

Who would have thunk that Howie Mandel's life still served a purpose?
Even without Deal or No Deal, until my full Bobby's World set comes out, Mandel's life will have a purpose.

I forgot about "Bobby's World." Prior to "Deal or No Deal" his best work was angering Halle Berry after her hit-and-run incident a few years back.

I just hope this show doesn't get run into the ground like "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" By that I mean there should never ever be a "Celebrity Deal or No Deal."

Can someone explain the premise?
"Tom Cruise, you can turn down 63,000 dollars now if you answer one question: Deal, or no deal?"

"63 thou? Who the **** cares?"

On a more serious note, I really want Bobby's World.

From NBC.com:

"The rules are simple. Choose a briefcase. Then as each round progresses, you must either stay with your original briefcase choice or make a "deal" with the bank to accept its cash offer in exchange for whatever dollar amount is in your chosen case.

Once you decide to accept or decline the bank's offer, the decision is final.

Contestants are encouraged to ask friends or family in the audience for advice; however, only the contestant's answer will be considered binding and final. "

Average John or Jane Q. Then as each round progresses, you must either stay with your original briefcase choice or make a "deal" with the bank to accept its cash offer in exchange for whatever dollar amount is in your chosen case.

And there's Howie Mandel!

I thought that I'd hate this show, but it IS strangely addictive. I wish it weren't all pure luck, as there really isn't any skill involved, just random happenstance. Howie is a natural as the host, though. I'm just waiting for him to put a rubber glove over his head...just ONCE. Come on!
I think the show is pretty terrible. I'd rather see Dog Eat Dog make a comeback.

I guess it's okay that they use Playmates as the briefcase wenches, though.
really dig this show. It is like you guys said...strangley addictive.

Same here. I watched first in december to see another train wreck... I watched the whole week. It's like televised crack with Gizmo at the wheel.
30 minute format would be better, though.
Yeah I love this show. After this week, are they going to show it once a week or are they keeping this on every night?
Once a week, one would hope.
Yeah, I think it will regularly air on Monday nights.
they had a casting call for contestants in Raleigh, NC this past week. I heard the lines were outrageous to get on this show.

I do agree a 30 minute version is more tolerable than an hour.

I think it's gonna be on Mondays and Fridays for a while. I don't mind the hour format, but they should speed up the earlier case selections so that they can always fit in 2 different contestants per episode and not have to carry people over from the previous show.
I hear they're making a version for Food Network where you pick a pickle jar and have to choose "Dill...Or No Dill".

Man, I suck.
The show is just terrible. It's slow, stupid and involves no skill at all.

It's not like most other game shows require much from their contestants. "Wheel of Fortune" is just hangman. "Family Feud" is guess a bunch a shit. "Deal" puts folks in a position where they can really fuck themselves over and I appreciate such things.
At least those games require something from the contestant. Sure, those other games are based on simple premises, but the simplicity doesn't make it any less challenging. This is just people randomly choosing briefcases with absolutely no skill involved whatsoever.
I like the fact that you can walk out with at least 20K in the first round with no effort or much luck.

I really liked the show last night, the guy was getting offered 100K , 150K, and he wouldn't take it. At the end, he was almost blinded by his own greed ... there were only 2 amounts left $500,000 or $300. He almost didn't want to hear the offer from Howie, which turned out to be $250K! Lucky for him he took it and it turned out that he had $300 in his case.

That's why I kind of enjoy this show, you see people just going blind with greed and turning down huge amounts of money. It's like they don't realize that the odds of having the big numbers in their 1st case are so low.
If I want to see people going blind with greed I'll watch the news. The fun of game shows always amounts to the viewer's own involvement. Being able to say "oh, I know that" while someone else fails is the joy of watching these things. This amounts to watching people get a winning or losing lottery ticket. Either way, I've got no involvement.
There was a lady a couple nights ago who got it down to her case and one other. She ended up walking away with $5. It was pretty funny.

This show is definitely silly, but it's kinda fun to be rooting for the people and then root against them when they've gone and made a stupid decision. It is just luck, though, so I'm waiting for somebody to just open the cases in numerical order.

It doesn't require skill, but you do need to gauge whether the bank is going to offer you more or less money after each round and whether there are enough high dollar cases left to stay in the game. The one last night was great because if that guy had picked the $500,000 case he would have had his spirit shattered right on television.

It's basically a very socially acceptable version of Russian Roulette, with babes and Howie Mandel.
Russian Roulette doesn't take 45 minutes to get to the money shot.

Let's Make a Deal had this same premise, but it worked because it moved very quickly (and had personality). You got to see loads of failure and success in your half-hour of watching. This is twice as long and has about 1/10th of the payoff.

I would like to see it move a bit quicker and I wouldn't be shocked at all if after a month I'm sick of the program. But as of right now it has some genuine tension attached to it, not to the level of "Millionaire" when that first took off but it has its hooks into me.

Everyone is a little different. I used to love "Survivor" but now not so much. I can't glance at "American Idol" or "(Blank activity) with the Stars" for 30 seconds without feeling ill. But I'm down with "Deal."
I don't care of anyone else likes it, I just don't get it is all.

The one time I attended a Russian Roulette match it actually lasted much longer than I'd have guessed. The contestants were give ample time to build up their nerve. I'd say it lasted 45 minutes if you count the clean-up.

My wife and I are so hopelessly addicted to this show. I agree that it should be sped up some, but damn it's amazing. What people will do on national TV for money is awesome (not that it's any big surprise). I just love how people almost always choose poorly when faced with the "Deal or No Deal" option...tonight, the whitest-white guy ever turned down $78,000 to roll the dice (against his whole family's advice). Problem was, the odds were stacked against him, so he ended up with $8. I KNOW he's getting a divorce the second he gets home. Hell, he was probably left to die as soon as the show ended.

What's amazing is the current run of bad luck the contestants have had. For being random, they sure do suck.

We're not one to watch this type of stuff (we watch as little TV as possible), but damn. People are crazy.

You better believe I'm putting together an audition tape for this madness!
I've discovered that it's increasingly more fun to root against the contestants. Espically when the family is so fake and plastic like the ones last night(they ended up with 8 Bucks) Or that over emotional crying guy in the Texas flag shirt and Cowboy hat.
Is this show scripted? The family - the folks who won the $8 - all seemed like actors. Especially the kids.

I don't think so. I tried out for this show and had to wait in a four hour line along with about 3,000 other people. If they were just casting actors, I don't think they'd go to the trouble of having open casting calls all over the country.

I'm sure there's a fair bit of coaching that goes on before each episode, though, which is probably why so many of the families seem like they're reciting lines.
This may sound mean, but the best part of the show is watching Howie try to conceal his germ-phobia/ocd or whatever he has that makes him freak out when people try to touch him. He's in close quarters with them, they get excited and try to grab Howie, and he just shrinks away in fear. Watch as they try to shake his hand and Howie just barely manages a shakey fist bump instead. I also enjoy the game, but Howie's personal quirks are magic.

The models shouldn't be allowed to speak nor make any type of facial expressions.

Danny Glover with braces (?) was just on the season finale. His teeth always seemed fine to me. I hear after the taping he stayed to sign autographs, went outside and didn't catch a cab.
