CASINO ROYALE Pre-release Discussion - Page 12

They just showed a clip during the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions broadcast.

I'm not familiar with the story line so i dont have any context here, but Bond is heads up in a huge pot vs the main villain im assuming, and Bond gets coolered with a full house against the villains quad Jacks.

The villain then says something like "Did you think i was bluffing Mr. Bond?"

meh.. wasnt very reassuring.

Bond was thinking "I've fucking got the 2nd nuts!" with AK on a AAJKJ board

About that scene

SPOILERS: It's a good scene because Bond thinks he knows Le Chiffre's tell, which is why he goes all in against him. Turns out Le Chiffre's was faking his tell, double bluffing him. It's all about Bond being rash, and then after that he's unable to get his treasury liaison to stake him more money, so he ends up having to get cash from Felix Leiter, who happens to be at the same table for the same reason - they're trying to bankrupt Le Chiffre, who is playing with terrorist client money.

Sounds like many of the better elements of the movie are coming right out of the book. I know Devin said they don't plan on remaking any of the existing films, but I hope they continue to turn to strong source material for ideas in the future of the series.

It was a bad joke.

*Dances like Conan O Brien*

Okay folks, enough of that.

Found the Novel today. And it looks like they didn't do a film adaptaion. The just stamped "Soon to be a major motion picture" on the cover.

Kinda dissapointed.
Why are you dissapointed to be reading the original novel? Novelizations suck for the most part anyway.

I already own the original novel...and love it. I just would want to at least read the differences.

The new Art of Bond book by Laurent Bouzreau has some spoilery pics in it, including one of the tied naked to a chair torture scene.

Not as strictly as they seem to have in the states. Loads of reviews popped up in English and Irish newspapers last weekend.

Usually embargoes, in my experience, are enforced by editors who are strict about stuff appearing as near to release date as possible, but they're less strict if it's a general interest site or mag that happens to have reviews, than they are if they're a music or film mag. Film companies in Ireland rarely enforce embargoes.

Anyway, enough ramlbin:

If you're up right now (or in 3 hours on the west coast), Daniel Craig is coming up next on Letterman. Probably a clip.

EDIT: Aaaaaand, that kinda sucked. I guess I wasn't expecting Charlie Rose or James Lipton level discourse, but it felt like he said maybe one sentence about the flick.

I'm surprised Craig wasn't the lead guest, and yeah too much time on Road to Perdition and not enough time on Bond.

But if the clip is any indication that stairwell fight sceen is gonna be badass.

While there are only seven reviews as of the time of this posting, have a 100% Tomatometer rating six days before release ain't a bad thing.

FUCK Road to Perdition.

Dave usually askes the right questions. Screw you, Letterman!
First negative, from Time.
Any chewers caught this yet ? Usually Devin or Nick can at least give us a "its poop" or "its good" before the review goes up.

Never mind. I see Devins posts on this page....

"You will read "This is the best Bond film in a long time" over and over and over again in the week to come.

And the truth is, Casino Royale is the best Bond film in a long time… at least since Martin Campbell last took the helm with Goldeneye."

Poland chimes in

A couple friends of mine (whose opinions I value) saw CASINO ROYALE earlier this week. They were unanimous and steadfast in their very strongly-worded opinions. And I'm going to ignore everything they said...

...because otherwise I'll be going in with my expectations way too high.
I'd like to tell you "Good call, keep 'em in check, you'll walk out happier," etc...but that would imply your friends are wrong.
Yeah, I know. It's weird having the old Bond fan within me re-awaken with even just a twinge of excitement after being so beaten-down by the last few films. Must be like the first time Marshall Bell looked down and realized, "Shit. Kuato."

Wells even after being dissed by Sony, is preaching

Quote:
Due in no small part to Daniel Craig's totally-unto-itself, ace-level performance, Royale is certainly the best James Bond film in over 40 years and is close to being the best Bond ever. I still feel on some level that Dr. No and From Russia With Love have an old-hat specialness because the early '60s era in which they were made isn't that far removed from the early '50s zeitgeist that informed the early 007 novels from Ian Fleming
the rest http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/archi.../best_bond.php

that seals it, I am beyond estatic, and I also have the bloody OSU vs UM game this weekend as well

Man, ain't it great? I go to OSU, but I'm doing Bond on Friday. Weekend from Heaven.
you live in the Cbus and attend OSU Stew? Small world I guess, I graduated this summer, but still fulltime job less. Have been on campus twice this week actually. I just moved out by Easton to take a break.

I heading to the first showing at the Arena Grand, why Bond doesnt merit midnight openings is beyond me, then to the Dead Schebechlers later at the Newport, proably will see CR on Sunday again as well so yeay Best Weekend ever.

My theatre is doing a midnight CR. Although for a 2 1/2 hr movie I dunno how wise that is.

Saw the Soundtrack at Barnes and Noble today...and how they cannot include the title song is beyond me.
My wife wants to see CR, so we'll go see it in theatre for sure. I'm not sold by the commercials for CR that proclaimed how it is "the best Bond movies ever made"; I still think Sean Connery is the best Bond, ever. But I'm willing to give Daniel Craig a shot and see how he does. CR can't be worse than DAD, I don't think.
Moariarty at AICN doesn't like Paul Haggis, and really hasn't liked modern Bond.

And he loves it. One of the most favorable, gushing reviews I've read from him in a long while. Tomorrow can't come soon enough.
Great movie if a bit longish. For a movie where the sex appeal of the lead was questioned, the women at my cinema seemed to outnumber the men 5 to 1.

Craig hits the ground running. So effortless that it feels like he's been Bond for ages. For my money, Craig's Bond outshines all those who came before him.

So when does this become a post-release thread?

I am going to dinner with a group of friends tomorrow evening and then we are headed to the 8:00 screening, followed by drinks and a live band at a local bar.

Shouldn't the post release thread go into the Focused Film forum?
Very good stuff. Too long and with at least one extraneous set piece, but still very good.
I haven't seen CR yet, but I'd like to know if Craig has the same effortless charm and sense of humor as Connery, or is he just a man on a mission throughout the movie? He doesn't look like he can crack a joke, or perhaps it is intended this way; the producers want a no-nonsense actor who kicks ass to be our new modern-day Bond.
He does. Easily.
What say you all? Screw that the non-fan noise. I want to hear from the real true-blue Bond fans?

Do we love it, loathe it, or just kinda dig it?

I shall see it on the morrow.
As I posted in the post-release thread, I loved it. It walked a crazy line between over the top and "real" in its tone. Found myself wishing slightly it'd go a little further into "real", but loved the blend as it was. Defintely could have been a bit shorter, but I really only felt it in the recuperation sequence (which is straight out of the book, so I felt forgiving toward it). I wouldn't give up any of the set pieces for a shorter running time.

A nitpick - Felix seems to freakin' disappear rather abruptly, and I would have liked more of him.

The title sequence was like Christmas Day. And not just because of all the red and green. Watching that sequence unfold was a year's highlight. Can't wait to see it (and the rest of the film) again.
wrong thread
It was in direct response to the post above mine. And I'm going to miss just the 12 or so of us posting, without wading through the "I thought it was his ass getting slapped" and 30 posts of "best since goldeneye"...
We'll stll have the "Best of Bond" thread, and I'm sure the hardcore fans will make their presence felt in the "Post-release" thread rather quickly. Still, this has been a great "pre-release" thread, well done gentlemen.
