Dane Cook coming to HBO?

Word is that HBO has recently signed a multi-project deal with comedian Dane "Suck My Back!" Cook. This deal will include specials and series, among other things, and marks the first time that HBO has ever done this with any individual. They say that they're planning to air Dane's comedy tour documentary, Tourgasm, and they're also working on a pilot for a half-hour comedy series.

Whoa. Comedy series? I love Dane and all, but, honestly, the idea of having him lead a comedy series makes me a little nervous. I never fail to crack up at his jokes (despite hearing them quoted all around me, 24/7) but is he really enough to carry a show week after week? The only things I see happening are A) Dane is way too much for the series (unfortunately, I can only imagine him playing an over-the-top jackass... not the sort of character that the audience really sympathizes with) and it gets real old, real fast or B) they tone down Dane so much that it's painful to watch and his career goes hurdling down the toilet faster than the punchline for one of his drinking anecdotes. But, either way, I'll be watching to find out.

I think let him start with comedy specials, and then lets see where he goes from there. He has a visual style of comedy that has translated well for other stand ups who pursued more traditional careers in hollywood.

But let him do some HBO specials, win some emmy's, and then surround himself with some good writers. If he can do that, he will be the next Chappelle (even though I already appreciate him as the best stand up comic working today, the rest of the country will take note of it too.)

I'd definately watch if they do in fact give him his own show. I know they're filming a standup special in April for him in Boston.

Dane Cook is big, obvious and not funny. He's good at selling himself at that's about it. Comparing him to Chappelle is a huge stretch. I see an Arliss type show for Cook.

Dane Cook is vastly funnier than Robert Wuhl is and ever will be. Arli$$ was one of the worst original shows on HBO.

It's more applicable to compare Cook to Wuhl than to Chappelle. I don't get why HBO is going this direction. They rarely make mistakes are are headed for a big one with Cook.

well, I think its your opinion anya and you are entitled to it.

I find his comedy style to be very manic, energetic, and off the wall. I don't think he is obvious at all. I think he is uses a lot of catch phrase style humor in his routine, but he brings a lot of originality to the game. I compare him to chappelle in popularity only. Chappelle has a very different style of comedy and possibly more socially conscious than Cook.

The guy's last album broke all sorts of records for comedy albums. There is obviously an untapped market out there waiting for more dane cook. I don't think HBO is making a dumb move at all.
