It's the one I know at least Gray has been waiting for. And hell, me too. From DavisDVD.com:

Quote:
Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release Smokey and the Bandit: Special Edition on May 30th. This edition of the 1977 high octane blockbuster arrives with all-new digitally re-mastered 1.85 anamorphic transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 tracks. Newly produced bonus materials include "Loaded Up and Truckin'" making-of documentary and "Snowman, What's Your 20?" CB Tutorial. Retail is $19.98.
Now I can hear "Barbeque your ass in molasses" in crystal clear 5.1 sound.

Sounds like a whole lot of Jerry Reed goodness right there.

Buford: Nobody, and I mean NOBODY makes Sheriff Buford T. Justice look like a possum's pecker.
Junior: Except for that...
Buford: Shut your ass.

Sheriff Branford: The fact that you are a sheriff is not germane to the situation.
Buford: The god damn German's got nothin' to do with it.

Carrie: You have a great profile.
Bandit: Yeah, I do, don't I? Especially from the side.
Carrie: Well, at least we agree on something.
Bandit: Yeah. We both like half of my face.

I somehow manage to forget how much I really liked this movie, along with other films that Burt did back in the day. SATB has aged surpsrisingly well for me. I'm going to get this and The Longest Yard, very soon.

Paul Crewe: What do ya got for me, Sunshine?
Caretaker: I can get you steroids, vitamins, greenies, anything you want. You name it. I'm the best hustler in the joint.
Paul Crewe: How much of what this guy says he can do, can he do?
N.Scarboro: He can get you laid in here... with a woman.

Captain Knauer: Dammit, Warden, I think the game's a big mistake.
Warden Hazen: Captain, not only will you have the chance to hone our team to a fine edge, you'll also have the opportunity to learn a great deal about life. Why is it, do you suppose, that I can walk through this yard, surrounded by hate, and in total command?
Captain Knauer: Because you've got 15 gun turrets all around you that say you can.

Granville: Alright men, now here's the play were gonna use. I don't think the guards know this formation. It's called 'incidental punishment after the ball is blown dead.' Remember, any man you tackle gets an extra elbow, knee, or kick in the mouth.

'Streetbound and down, loaded up and truckin', we just do what they say can't be done'

This is always a fun film to watch.

I have bad memories of this film constantly being shown on television with the most atrocious dubbing of Jackie Gleason to cover up the swearing with absolutely ridiculous stuff like "You crumb-bum". The guy doing the dub sounded like he thought he was doing Yosemite Sam. It was awful.

None of that is the movie's fault, of course. But it left me scarred.

So did Universal grease some palms to get Smokey featured in that Oscar montage?
I don't know about that one, but somebody better have been paid to put The Day After Tomorrow in the "socially conscious films" montage.

I always liked that early car chase where, at the end, Burt drives slowly right in front of the camera, looks right at the viewer, smiles, and drives off. Just a great, random moment that they could (and probably should) have reshot. The fact that they left it in just tells you that they knew what the audience was looking for...a good time.

And I agree on the atrocious dubbing of Jackie Gleason's voice for the tv version of the film. The voice sounded like the bastard child of Fred Flintstone and Yosemite Sam, and it was very distracting. Couldn't they have at least gotten Jackie to do the dubbing??? It would be kinda funny if they had that voice on an alternate audio track so that those of you who haven't heard it could cringe along with the rest of us.

I'll be buying this dvd.

Honestly, I think I read somewhere a looong time ago that Mel Blanc actually did the re-dubbing of Jackie Gleason for the TV cut. That's why it sounds so Yosemite Sam-like. Of course, I could be totally wrong as well.

Gleason probably wanted too much money to come back and redub his lines. I always thought the fella redoing the dirty talk for the TV sanitized version was the same guy who voiced Fred Flintstone. I caught this not too long ago on late night cable, first time I'd seen it in many years, and thought it was just as great as ever before and amazed at how little of it has actually aged. Truly '70s redneck is timeless. I'm buying this DVD.

All of you may be aware of this already, but if you get the Scarface DVD that came out recently they have a section on the TV version of the movie that's pretty funny.

I also remember watching Smokey on TV and it was bloody awful.

I'll pick up this DVD because it was the best of the series. I had heard a few years ago they were going to remake this but nothing came of it thank god.

I want to see a remake with Norm Macdonald as the Bandit.

"Ahh, it's not Bandit. It's Turd Ferguson. That's funny, right?"

Picked this up last night...probably will watch this weekend. Sweet!

Yeah, believe it or not, I'm holding off for a couple of months. It'll be $10 or less at Target in no time at all. I think my TWO other Smokey and the Bandit DVDs should hold me over in the meantime.

I never had the movie on DVD, anticipating an SE of some sort. And it was only $13 anyway.

They've found a new way to repackage SatB!
...and then some!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003VRJ89S

How are there SEVEN movies, you ask? Well, they're including the four "Action Pack" flicks from the early '90s, along with the three originals. They weren't great, but they were kinda Bandit flicks, so why not? At least it's cheap. I'll snag this for completeness' sake when it drops a few bucks in price.

I want you all to know that this very special post is my 5000th. It's appropriate that I use it to post about my favorite flick. FEEL THE POWER!
