Saw it on Saturday... Excellent stuff. SNL is definitely back on top of its game, IMO. The last three years have been great.

The Wayne Brady/Chappelle Show gangsta thing was better.
yah, it's only good because it's portman. i'm glad they decide it's in everyone's best interest to have Sandberg in any sketch related to rapping or music in general. he's funny, but he's going to lose his edge if he keeps popping up all the time.

I love the look on that Amidala fan's face after getting rejected.

So apparently, SNL's new motif is that all it takes to get laughs is have white people rap. This is the big step up everybody's been talking about?
I still think it's more hot than it is funny.
I must agree...that was kinda hot.

I don't think that's the reason it's funny, at least not in the way you see attempted in stuff like Bringing Down the House or whatever. I think it's more that it's Natalie Portman, coming out of nowhere with a pretty filthy mouth, that makes it so great. It's the only SNL skit I've really liked since cowbell.

You have got to be kidding. I stopped watching after the godawful Martin show.
I hope Dana Reeve checked out before attempting to watch that. Christ.

The fact that so many people are now saying that SNL is back in top form is more an illustration of how low they've driven everyone's expectations than anything they're actually accomplishing.

Or that they're pretty young, on average. I guess if all you really remember are the truly atrocious days of SNL, the current run, which is simply mediocre, seems hilarious.

I'm seeing a slow, slow climb. Last year, for example, I'd watch an entire episode and never even chuckle (aside from Weekend Update). Now the show we'll get a few laughs out of me in the first hour, and usually they'll have one bit of hilarious gold in there per show. I really am a big fan of the digital shorts, haters be damned. Natalie's rap had me in stitches Saturday night, as did the Narnia rap the first time I saw it. The little-seen "Lettuce" digital short was great, too. I hope the show keeps getting better, no matter how slowly.

Also, do they get away with never using their black cast members just because they make jokes acknowledging the fact? The idea amuses me.
The problem for a lot of the black cast members is that most of the show's writers are white so they end up only using the black performers in the most obvious and foolish ways.

I'm not trying to defend the 2 guys who are currently on the show. They were as funny as a beheaded baby the couple times I caught the show last year. But in 30 years the only 2 guys to be more than just "the black guy" on that show are Eddie Murphy (who pretty much ran the show when he was on) and Tim Meadows who after his first few years was able to play all sorts of characters.

No love for Chris Rock? Nat X was a riot.

And I always thought Tim Meadows was boring as hell. The only time I thought he was funny was his small role in Mean Girls.
I always enjoyed Garrett Morris.

Nat X aside, Rock wasn't all that great on SNL. It wasn't all his fault for the reason stated above but even he didn't like how he was being showcased and took off for "In Living Color" (which ended up screwing him over even more, but did help fuel his desire to master stand-up).

I'm a big Meadows guy, from "SNL" and not THE LADIES MAN or (yeesh) "The Michael Richards Show." O.J. Simpson killing his wife and some waiter combined with Michael Jackson fucking kids was great for Meadows. It gave him a chance to be on more and after those stories died down he was still able to do a lot of good stuff alongside Will Ferrell and Norm Macdonald.
Meadows had one of the greatest SNL moments in history. The one where O.J.'s interviewed outside his gate.

"What? There's no shovel here! .........nigger. WHO SAID NIGGER???"
I loved the one, right after the verdict, where Meadows played O.J. going back to work as a sideline reporter for NBC. He was interviewing Bills' coach Marv Levy, played by Ferrell, and began using the telastrator to analyze the Bills' offense. He ended up writing the words "I did it" on the screen.

He also did a fantastic Don King.

Ferrell's reaction to that was great.

I thought the only reason he was funny there was that he was given several great lines. It's not that he delivered them all that well. Anybody could have gotten laughs with that dialogue.
I guess I'll have to take your word on Meadows. In almost every skit I saw him in he was just playing "generic black straight man."
That was the case his first few years when Sandler, Myers, and Farley were the big guns. But as they left he was able to be more than just "the black guy." Though I love the sketch Farley and Meadows did as the singing duo that's straight, but sing as if they were gay for each other.
To be fair I was out of the country and didn't see any SNL from 1996-2000.
That's a shame. You missed Norm Macdonald's scathing last couple of years. Insanely funny.
Sketch comedy didn't play to any of Chris Rock's strengths as a comedian, so he was never particularly good on the show.

.
The best thing written for a black guy was written for a guest. Sinbad as Black Lightning at Superman's funeral.
"And who are you?"
"I'm Black Lightning! Remember?"
"Eat some lightning chump!"

This didn't really deserve it's own thread, but since I'm watching this as a quicktime file...

Does anyone know how to save an imbedded Quicktime file to your computer? I really wish I could do this. If nobody sees this, I'll start a thread.
I think you just have to get Quicktime pro.
Yeah, you need Pro to save an online file that doesn't have a direct download link. There used to be a backdoor way of doing it in Internet Explorer, but Quicktime fixed that a couple updates ago.
Well that was three minutes of my life I'll wish I'd spent differently when the Reaper calls.
So if I watched it and didn't laugh once, do I still have to "admit" that it's hilarious?

Seriously, I didn't laugh. Once. And it's not that I didn't want to. I like things that are funny. Which, in case I haven't been clear, that wasn't.

Maybe this is going out on a limb with a crazy pet theory, but do you suppose it's possible that some people find things funny that other people don't? Or is everybody who doesn't laugh at what you find funny a poser who's trying to be superior and pretentious?

Not everybody. Just you.
So do you seriously believe that, deep down inside, I found the clip hilarious, but I withheld my laughter in order to be a dick? Would I have something to gain from this? Believe me, when feeling superior to a couple of people on Internet forums becomes such a priority for me that I begin to deny myself entertainment in order to claim moral superiority, I'll take my own life. I'm truly sorry that my failure to find amusement in the mere sight of a waifish white girl doing gangsta rap offends you so deeply. Next time, I'll fake it. But I'm sure you're used to that.

Sadly, if we can take your post at face value, I expect you'll be taking your own life any day now...
Who'd have thought that the idea that someone wouldn't find an SNL clip funny would piss people off so much? Another species of Browncoat is born.

That Sam Donaldson guy was pretty good.
