Isaac Hayes Quits 'South Park'

Thread Starter
NEW YORK - Isaac Hayes has quit "South Park," where he voices Chef, saying he can no longer stomach its take on religion.

Hayes, who has played the ladies' man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed.

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.

"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

"South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem — and he's cashed plenty of checks — with our show making fun of Christians."

Last November, "South Park" targeted the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers, including actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, in a top-rated episode called "Trapped in the Closet." In the episode, Stan, one of the show's four mischievous fourth graders, is hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won't come out.

Stone told The AP he and co-creator Trey Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."

Only further proves the theory that scientologists are assholes.

What an ass hole. This speaks volumes about that cult. So when does the episode of Issac Hayes gonna happen? That or Chef dying a horrible death.
Frankly, I'm surprised the Scientologist high command waited this long to order him to quit the show.

The Duke Of New York is a Scientologist?!?!?!!? Fuck, I'll never look at those chandeliers on his car the same way again...
That raises the question about whether or not they should recast Chef or kill him off?
Chef hasn't been a decent character on that show for seasons. Let him get killed off. Or, better yet, abducted by Xenu.
A prime oppertunity to bring back the classic carachter...Mr. Derp. Chef's replacement when he was under the influence of a Succubus.
All they have to do is make Chef a crazy scientologist and use a small white man for his voice.

Goodbye, children!

I'm glad Parker & Stone ripped him a new one publicly over being a hypocrite. You have to question someone who has no problem laughing at others, but can't laugh at themselves.

South Park is still on?
on the air and better than ever, IMO.
Chef's pretty much been a non-presence for the past few seasons anyway. I liked his work on the show, but at this point, he won't be missed.

EDIT: Apparently no one in the Church of Scientology was bright enough to see that the episode Super Best Friends from four seasons ago with "blaintology" was an attack on them.
Yes. He got tired of working on the show exactly at the point where they ream his "religion". Nothing more than coincidence.
No. Just his own.

They didn't happen to rape your childhood, did they? Because you're throwing a hissy fit like they did. Parker and Stone ARE still relevant, as relevant as remaining the top-rated show on Comedy Central can make you.

Frankly, any show that takes shots evenly at liberals and conservatives gets a pass in my book. If someone from either side gets too riled up...they're a bit of a humorless pussy.

Since I hadn't seen the episode in question, I decided to look on Wikipedia and read up on what I missed, and then read a bit about Scientology.

Interesting fact: Today was also L. Ron Hubbard's birthday.

Damn, I hate when this happens. Most "issues" have 2 sides so an interesting discussion can (potentially) ensue. In this case though, hayes is just full of shit. Even hard core southpark haters and life long scientologists have to admit it's simple, blatant hypocracy. No grey area. No possible spin.

He might as well have said, "offending people is funny... unless it's me, that crosses the line."

"Oh my God, they killed Chef!"

I am now waiting to hear those words ...

Isn't it time for you to post about what a liberal you are again?
Hey John Shade, either you are a troll or a fucking moron. For your sake, I hope it's the first option. If you can't see the blatant hypocrisy in this, then you should be wearing a helmet at all times.

I like the tolerance towards Islam you've shown in your posts in the politics forum, John. You and Isaac would get on swimmingly, given the shared hypocrisy-ground you inhabit.
Does this mean Chef's parents aren't gonna be back? The Loch Ness Monster's probably a Scieno now because they never gave him his 'tree fiddy'.

Since that time it's possible he just got fed up with attacks on various religions. Besides that, look how worked up you are over this. Is a 70s R&B singer quitting a voice acting gig on a cartoon, and maybe being a hypocrite in doing so, really worth even thinking about, let alone caring about? Yet you call me a moron...

3. Junior Mint, I don't even know what your post is supposed to mean. What have I posted that shows an intolerance to Islam? Post proof or retract.
Religion forum. Islam is only interested in taking over the world, a Pat Robertson statement which, according to you, is "telling the truth". Then there's the notion put forward that the religious right should be put up with and humoured because, according to you, they're harmless, whereas Islamic extremism is only interested in violence. Are you so niave as to believe that there aren't violent elements wthin the religious right? Or that their designs on the world are somehow far nobler than any other form of extremism?

He's about eight years too late, no?

And I can imagine them doing some hellish things with Chef's character now. I can see him being shit on, quite literally, quite a few times.
Scientology is no crazier than any of the religions you all practice. And it's bat-shit crazy.
I'm absolutely sure Isaac doesn't think he's being hypocritical.
And as Goldberg poimted out, the show's previous slam on Scientology was a subversive one. Isaac probably didn't even realize it.

- Yeah, they ripped on Scientologists before--but nothing was as blatant and obvious as the "Trapped in the Closet" episode. Mr. Hayes and his fearful leaders probably didn't pick up on it until that episode.

- We really aren't that worked up. Do you think we are screaming at our computers and wishing death upon the man? Hardly--it's just comical to see a guy show how obviously hypocritical he is. One must be very stupid if they can't look at their own statements on the issue and think "damn, I'm really being a hypocrite here."

I'll poke around a bit and see if I can get another argument going. Is South Park really an equal opportunity offender when it comes to religion? I've been watching the show for a long time, and Mormonism and Scientology are the only two religions I've seen truly mocked and disemboweled on the show so far. Now, Jews may certainly get offended because of all horrendous things Cartman says to Kyle (which I think is silly - the whole point is that bigots are idiots), and Christians might get offended by the situations they put Jesus in, but none of the other religions (to my knowledge) have their core beliefs mocked.

Now, either way, Hayes is a hypocrite for leaving now as opposed to the "dumb, dumb-dumb dumb dumb" Mormon episode. I'm curious as to what everyone thinks of the alleged fair distribution of religious satire on the show.l

Ever see the one where the college of cardinals ask the giant alien spider for guidance? I thought that one was pretty much aimed directly at Catholicism. Being a Catholic and all, I found it hilarious. They've gone directly at the belief structure of more than just the fringe religions. I've yet to see a real bitch-slap of Islam, but then again I don't watch regularly. So basically I maintain that Parker & Stone are still the equal-opportunity offenders they claim to be.
a couple things...

first if you haven't seen 'trapped in the closet' it is available at xenu.net, free download, with the blessings of Matt and Trey.

second, they did rip catholics, a number of times.

third, the mormon episode, while making fun of many of the more ridiculous aspects of mormonism, they did show respect towards the things that mormonism gets right. most notably a strong sense of family. I really enjoyed that episode (dum dum dum dum dum)

While Parker & Stone haven't made fun of Judaisms core beliefs they have stereotyped them occasionally. Several of the people protesting "The Passion" were drawn to look like jewish stereotypes. In another episode Kyle is shown to have a bag of gold around his neck.

That's why I don't practice religion at all. I invested my two talent pools in Engineering and Mining, since it'd make things easier for me in end-game runs. And religion isn't a secondary talent either that you can have on the side either, like Fishing or First Aid.

Wait. Damn, there I go again, blurring WoW and real life again.

Plus, you know, worst case scenario, you can mine yourself out of Hell.

Looks like the Succubus finally got Chef.
Just agree that Hayes is an incredible hyprocrite over this.
