Mary, I saw your post in the United Kingdom thread, and I was curious, if you don't mind me asking, how you were able to swing a gig in London. I have worked overseas also (in Germany, for the U.S. gov't; I was a military spouse) and now that I am shedding my worthless husband, I am looking at the possibility of going back to a similar job in Germany. The U.K. seems to be a tighter job market for U.S. gov't jobs, and I have no clue about what types of jobs there would be open to foreigners, but the list of things I wouldn't do for a gig in the U.K. tends to get shorter over time.

Ack - I just had typed a responce (took me twenty minutes) and the fucking thing said I wasn't loged in (yeah, how the hell was I typing the fucking message to begin with). Bastards!!!

Anyway, enough with the ranting and ravings of a woman studying on a Sunday afternoon (for a professional finance exam - someday I'll get to have some letters after my name - uh, yea..)

The best thing to look at is the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP). Don't worry about the "Highly Skilled" part, hell, I work in the City and crunch numbers for a living. Nothing too highly skilled about that in my estimation. And that's what we have lawyers for - to make us sound highly skilled. Basically you need good work experience (well, constant and moving on up in the world sort of thing), at least a university education, made a decent amount of money in the last year (around US$40,000),and maybe have an interesting skill set. If you don't have the last two, having a lawyer that knows how to make everything sound good is necessary. But it can be done. That's why they get paid the big bucks.

The best part of the HSMP is that you don't need to have a job waiting for you here in the UK. You can look for a job when you get here. Employers love it because they don't have to mess with the hassel of immigration fees, etc. You have sponsored yourself. You just need to get a job. But at first it doesn't have to be full time. You can get yourself a part-time job and look for a nice permanent job . That's totally legal under the HSMP. The easiest place to find a job, if you want to live in London, is the City. Don't worry if you don't have exact experience in finance. Hell, I have a degree in International Politics and Law. And I crunch numbers. But if you want an interesting job that you'll love, the City probably isn't the place (I'm addicted to the money, so I'll never leave.).

My suggestion - don't be cheap about this. If you really want this, spend the necessary money to get a good lawyer with experience in this. That might cost you about US$2000 (cost me about £1000 for the initial stuff).

Hopefully this helps!

Am I on CHUD? This thread seems like it came from a different dimension.
