Sure the DVD has been released on DVD as many times as Evil Dead and Fifth Element, but it looks as though the end all be all edition will finally be released as The Critierion Collection has announced title 336: Dazed and Confused. Information can be found at http://www.criterionco.com/asp/release.asp?id=336

As well it should be.

About the Transfer

Dazed and Confused is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Black bars at the top and bottom of the screen are normal for this format. Director Richard Linklater and director of photography Lee Daniel supervised this new high-definition digital transfer, which was created on a high-definition Spirit 4K Datacine from a 35mm interpositive. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, and scratches were removed using the MTI Digital Restoration System. To maintain optimal image quality through the compression process, the picture on this dual-layer DVD-9 was encoded at the highest-possible bit rate for the quantity of material included. The soundtrack was mastered at 24-bit from the original stems, and audio restoration tools were used to reduce clicks, pops, hiss, and crackle. Plus, Melba Toast is packin’ 411 Positrac outback, 750 double pumper Edelbrock intakes, bored over 30, 11 to 1 pop-up pistons, turbo-jet 390 horsepower. We’re talkin’ some fuckin’ muscle.

It's just so, so hard for me to pay the asking price for these things. I have to wait 'till they're on Amazon, used, for under 20 bucks.

I wanna dance!

I've been meaning to pick this up. Thanks for the info.

Criterion has always been hella expensive, but they are one of the few dvd companies that I can be sure that I get what I pay for.

Also, Joblo has a list of the extras at http://www.joblo.com/index.php?id=10733

DAZED AND CONFUSED is a great movie but I don't think it's really Criterion material. We're talking about the company that regularly does Kurosawa and Jean-Luc Godard.

Hey, if Chasing Amy is Criterion material, then Dazed and Confused is.

Just got my copy in the mail today. The packaging alone is amazing and makes the set worth it. I plan on digging deeper into it tonight. Anyone else pick it up?

Dazed and Confused is definitely Criterion material. It's the best high school movie ever. Even though it's set in the 70s, it is far and away a better reflection of (at least my own) high school experiences than any teen comedy released before or after.

Criterion released Armageddon.

Enough said.

And The Rock. Both with good cause, in my opinion. Read the essays in the front cover. Then there's enough said.

Sure those titles don't have the critical clout of other titles released under the Criterion logo, but they are cinematic milestones in the "popcorn movie" dept. and while I'm not the biggest fans of either movie, I wouldn't argue against their place in the Criterion collection.

Absolutely. Criterion describes themselves as "a continuing series of important, classic, and contemporary films", not "a collection of the greatest films ever made." Michael Bay - and perhaps moreso Jerry Bruckheimer - are both important when in comes to the modern blockbuster, a subsection of film that deserves its place in the collection.

I will say, though, that I don't know if Bay deserved two entries. The DVD's are stacked and awesome in every way, so I certainly won't complain. I love them, but I do think that according to what Criterion's mission seems to be, it is kind of weird that he's got both of their blockbuster slots. I also wonder why Wes Anderson immediately gets Criterion treatment when his stuff hits DVD. He's great, and again, I certainly don't complain about these DVD's, I'm just curious why he gets that privilege.

ARMAGEDDON a cinematic milestone? Are you serious?

I can see The Rock getting a Criterion, but Armageddon getting one has always baffled me.
If it helps keep Criterion afloat to do the occasional Michael Bay movie, so be it.
The Criterion people are not Gods. They have made mistakes, mostly involving adding any part of the Michael Bay collection to their library.

Fuck the haters. I want a Criterion Transformers.

I'd have to say that the inclusion of The Rock and Armageddon into the Criterion Collection are purely for financial reasons. Big blockbuster summer movies that were released to pay the bills, so to speak, so we could have more foriegn and niche films released into the Criterion catalog.

I just recieved my copy of Dazed and Confused from Amazon mere moments ago. Packaging is gorgeous and the 73 page booklet I have only flipped through briefly but looks to be very well done, as is the poster replica.

I can't wait to tear into all the supplementary materials. Criterion releases really set the bar for what all film company's DVD releases should be, even dating back to the days of the laserdisc. This is one of the few times I haven't felt cheated by the need to "Double dip" on a film I already own.

If they'd only let Criterion handle this upcoming Blade Runner DVD set...

God this disc is great! If you go to the deleted scenes, and select "play all," you can follow the entire arc of the movie through the characters that are off-screen in the big scenes (mostly the female characters). And anyone who does not think this is Criterion material needs to watch it again.

And a big "screw you" to you too, sir. Criterion is not the only game in town when it comes to exhaustive supplements.

And they aren't the best by a fair bit. Di Laurisika and Pellerin are ahead of most in the industry.

If only one of them could get round to doing BACK TO THE FUTURE.
I hear the guy who does Lauzirika's production managment on those gigs is a real piss artist though. A huge beer monster.

This is a great movie and all, but does it really need this type of treatment? Why does Rolling Thunder remain exiled to VHS? Fuckholes.
