Question re DVD-to-Quicktime

Since there isn't a computer forum I figured this would be the place to put it.

I would like to capture video from commercial/copyrighted DVDs, and save the extracts as Quicktime or some other standard format. If possible I would like to avoid having to rip an entire movie (I don't know how to do this either) and would like to specify start and end points of the clip to capture.

I know some people do this to create animated GIFs, avatars etc.

I'm using a Mac, but a PC alternative would be fine as well. I've already tried something called DVD2Xdv, which doesn't work with copyrighted movies and comes out garbled.

If you just want to make animated gifs, simply play the DVD using PowerDVD (or similar) and use the Frame Advance and Screenshot buttons to create BMP files of the frames you want to animate in sequence. Then run them through Photoshop or similar to resize and resave them as GIF files - you can create a Batch Action to do them in one lot. Then use your animated gif maker of choice.

Not for GIFs, I want to start experimenting in film scoring using Logic, and I just need to make a few clips to work from. They don't have to be super high quality or anything.

What about using some of those "Watch the first five minutes free" clips? They have direct downloads to most movie Quicktime clips at www.davestrailerpage.co.uk so you can save them to your hard drive and get to work straight away.

I don't know if it'll work on copyrighted DVDs or not, but MPEG Streamclip is a great program that can rip clips from a DVD into a bunch of formats, including Quicktime.

If that doesn't work, your best bet would be to just go ahead and rip the whole disc, and then use Streamclip to export specific clips into Quicktime, as Streamclip reads VOB files directly.

For a mac, get HandBrake (it's free, and it let's you capture by individual chapters).

I'll second Handbrake. It's an excellent program, and pretty easy to use (pretty fast, too, if you've got a G5 or an Intel).
