The controversy was great for South Park as well. 3.5 million viewers for the premiere, a record for any Comedy Central premiere.

The George Clooney smug cloud was great. Still awesome.
Great follow-up episode. Social satire and fart jokes: that's why South Park is awesome.
If nothing else, that episode was a haven for possible avatars.

By South Park standards, that had to be one of the best looking episodes in a long time. Loved the cloud echoing Clooney's speech and the fart in a glass and Cartman in SF and.....I just loved the whole damn thing.

Most accurate depiction of San Francisco ever.

Was I the only one who thought that it was ironic that considering that it was against smugness, but the writers were clearly smug in writing this episode.

Most times there a point, this time it was an episode smugly attacking smugliness (if that is even a word)

Thanks to Cartman, I now have a saying to yell for the week ahead:

"Oh my Christ!!!"

No, you're not the only one who thought that. I couldn't help but wonder if Trey and company were aware of the attitude they were projecting and meant for it to be a part of the joke.
If they really wanted the whole Oscar/smug thing to work, they would've done something to tie in Crash winning Best Picture, and Paul Haggis' acceptence speech. Clooney's an easier, bigger target, but it would've been funnier--and yeah, a little less smug.

I did love Cartman's trek into San Fransisco, though.
Cartman's going away party for Kyle and the Fart Smelling got me. Very Funny Episode.

^_^ <----smug expression

I notice that Matt Goldberg's avatar is smugging as well.

Anybody notice that now, at the end of the theme song when everyone is standing near the sign, that Chef has been replaced by Darth Chef?

Yeah, this bothered me a little too, but I guess we shouldn't be surprised by this coming from the guys who used the success of SP to make a movie viciously attacking celebrities for using their success to speak out on their personal beliefs.

The fart smelling was goddamn hilarious though.

Just saw a commercial for this. Kyle's dad sees Family Guy on the TV and flips the hell out, smashing the TV with a baseball bat. This one looks like a keeper.
This should be interesting. Both The Simpsons and Clerks have bashed on Family Guy so I'm curious to see what Matt and Trey have to say.
The guy who wrote the Ringer, Ricky Blitt, was a writer for Family Guy. He got pissed when people said the movie was a South Park rip-off. Blitt went on to claim that Parker and Stone ripped him off.
I don't think they're going to go after Family Guy on the basis of a writer nobody knows.
Here's hoping they at least mock Family Guy's complete reliance on "Remember that time..." jokes.
Family Guy, despite the fact that it shamelessly rips off pretty much everything, makes me laugh. It's a genuinely funny show, I hope Trey and Matt at least acknowledge that. Actually I think they will, as they've been pretty fair in the past. Also the plot summary mentions that Kyle likes the show, and he and Stan are to of the easiest characters to sympathise with.
I'm both excited and scared to see this episode. All the criticisms I've heard boil down to "it goes for the easy jokes" or "it's just a clip show with no real plot", so I'm eager to see South Park's reasons. I like Family Guy because it makes me laugh, period.

From Wikipedia...

When questioned about the meanest thing anyone ever said to them, Stone replied 'When people say to me, God, you guys have one of the best shows on television. You and Family Guy. That fucking hurts so bad', to which Parker agreed: 'Very well said. It's such a kick in the balls."
Awesomeness expected....

South Park gets Peabody award
Probably why they hate being compared to family guy.

Also getting nods The Shield, House, Boston Legal, Battlestar Galactica, The Staircase.

Too bad it will take 6 months or so for Family Guy to respond.

Yeah, that makes sense. Family Guy gets an Emmy for being an enjoyable TV show, South Park gets a Peabody for "excellence in broadcasting" (not adding quotes because I'm questioning the award, just quoting verbatim what the Peabody was created for). Both shows are funny, but in the end SP tries to have a message to tie everything together. Family Guy doesn't need one.
Without a doubt, one of their best episodes in a long, long time.

"Or will Comedy Central puss out?"

Priceless.....
To be continued!

Wonderful, and completely hilarious commentary on the whole Danish cartoon issue.

And all things considered, the show was actually rather kind to Family Guy, even in the parodies. Pretty much came down to "It's a funny show, but stop comparing us to them"...which pretty much echoes what Trey and Matt said in that interview.

Nevertheless, Cartman's roadside rant was just great. (And despite being a fan of both shows, i completely agree.) Kyle's dad destroying the TV was great. Jimbo's reaction to the rational guy's speech was great.

I love this show.
Goddamn, the show is on a roll this season. Is it just me, or are the animators loving to use computer graphics a lot more this season?

"Seriously, 'Family Guy' isn't even that well-written.
The jokes are all interchangeable and usually irrelevant to the plot."
Who wants to bet that Comedy Central will puss out?

I'm pretty sure there won't be a part 2 to this episode. Next week we'll just get some new stand alone ep with no reference to this one at all.

I like how it could be all taken literally, but at the same time it's not too hard to weve scientology into the commentary here either.

Well you seem to have goten your wish.

Oh, and that was a amazing episode.
Randy continues to be the best thing about the show. And of course, Cartman can make just about any line funny just by the way he says it.

And yeah, they nailed Family Guy but while their jabs were common complaints, I don't think could use Terrence and Phillip again because it would seem like a retread of the South Park movie.

Jesus, they just give those things out like candy. Don't get me wrong: I like all those shows (except for The Staircase which I've never heard of before), but didn't the Peabody Award used to be distinguished? Is this the same Peabody we're talking about or is it the the one who traveled through time with his boy Sherman?
Hilarious episode. The Big Wheel Chase was awesome.
I thought the Captian And Tenneille thing was funny, even if it was a rip on Family Guy. And what happened at the very end? My DVR cut off like the last minute or so of the episode.

"A jihad on Family Guy and the Family Guy nation!!! "

This show is seriously not screwing around this season. Great commentary on the Muslim cartoon fiasco. But, someone refresh my memory - wasn't Mohammed already on South Park (the "Super Best Friends" episode)?

Agreed. Which is why that was so scary - Trey and Matt nailed Family Guy at what it does best.
Martianman, the episode ended on a cliffhanger. The fox executive told the President "There's something you should know about the Family Guy writers..." and it basically ended there. It's a 2 parter.

Remember the Aprol Fool's episode where we didn't get to see who was Cartman's father? They won't do that again.

I think what might happen is they'll open up next week's episode w/ a "previously on South Park..." and we'll be treated so some over the top montage of last week's episode ending with "Will comedy central puss out?" and than they'll either show a picture of Comedy Central pussing out or just say "Yes, they did" and than show an episode that has nothing to do with last week's.

Will we ever get to see Muhammed drinking tea with Mr T?
Just saw a commercial on CC advertising Part 2 of South Park so maybe they didn't puss out after all.

0.02 cents:

Everything they said abut FG is true. So freaking what? The show's hilarious. Who cares what the context of the jokes is? When I sit down to watch FG, or SP, or the Simpsons, I'm not concerning myself with whether the jokes are "deep, situational, and emotional" or "relevant and have a point," I'm concerning myself with whether I'm laughing myself silly. A lot of the humor in "Airplane," "Top Secret," and "The Naked Gun" was out of left field and concerned itself little with the plot. Is that kind of comedy "not funny" or "not as good" because it isn't "deep, situational, and emotional?"

I was pretty much going to post the exact same thing.

Honestly, south park really isn't that funny anymore either. They have had some great highs (mormon and scientology episodes) but in general most of the writing is just chuckle inducing. This episode in particular was actually pretty laugh free also.

Is it really that bad of a thing that family guy makes us laugh even if they are out of context jokes? I think even this episode implied that family guy is funny, but people are making a bunch of shit up about pitting shows against each other.
I don't think SP is saying FG sucks (only cartman is!) they are just telling folks to stop comparing SP and FG, because they are different.
For some reason, all this "FG is funny, and that's all that matters" I've seen lately makes me think of the love (or lack thereof) for Michael Bay's action flicks.

I loved the ep; thought it was another classic. FG parody, self-parody, and Danish cartoon statement all in one.

I do wonder what they have to say of the FG writers, and whether Stone & Parker (thru Cartman vs Kyle) will actually admit that the show, despite the interchangeability and easy jokes, is actually funny.

If this quote is to be believed, they don't think that the Family Guy is funny.

And they shouldn't think it's funny, because it's a fucking horrible show. For the first time on SP, I think they've given Cartman an entirely noble cause.

Especially because Family Guy does suck. It's not opinion; it's science.

It's true. You can prove it with test tubes and thermometers.

I still wonder how it will play out, since Cartman, usually the asshole, hates the show, while Kyle, usually the level-headed character, loves the show.

Maybe I'm just offbase or don't know what's in store, but if they weren't gonna give the show any credit, they wouldn't have had both Stan and Kyle (the sympathetic characters) be fans.

But who knows? Maybe it'll be an ep where Cartman prevails...

I also wonder how/if McFarlane & Co. will react to this. I'll outright say that SP is a better show than FG (even though I probably laugh more at FG), but SP isn't without its own flaws/cliches...
