No bullet-proof glass on vehicles (let alone rock proof)? No wonder casualty rates are so high. I thought our (the Canadian) military was poorly equipped. Now I'm not so sure.

Well the things are full of gas you know. Armor may not help all that much, except to turn the cab into an easy-bake oven. What these convoys rely on is speed and an escort that can cover them with lots of firepower, but is also fast enough to catch back up with the convoy (that's why armored vehicles are no good as escorts). Many of our casualties are from troops in hummers. They use hummers on slow patrols in city zones where they're easy targets. The hummers have little or no armor (adding too much armor over-taxes the powertrain) and have no good places to fire from. The troops literally have to stick their arms out the windows to fire, exposing themselves badly.
It has been noted by several military experts that the M113 APC would be much better suited for these kinds of duty. It has good armor, it's tracked (so it can turn in place), and it has three hatches on top so three guys can cover front, back, and sides and duck back down under heavy fire. Woosh, now you know more than you wanted to.
