I fell in love with this show the moment I first saw it and have been eagerly awaiting the DVD release. There's no real way to describe it, so I'll let the critics tell you in their own words:

"Gonzo Goes Gonzo - MTV's relaunch has been hijacked by Wonder Shozen, an outrageously tasteless fauz kids' show reveling in meat and puppets (but, sadly, no Meat Puppets). Think Muppets on mescaline."
- Rolling Stone 4/20 Issue Number 973

"The Most Offensive New Show On TV (Set your TiVo!)"
- TimeOut New York, April 21-27 Issue No. 499

"In one segment, a 6-year-old confronts a stunned Wall Street broker with: 'Who did you exploit today?' "
- Daily News, Wednesday, April 27, 2005

" 'Wonder Shozen' contains offensive, despicable content that is too controversial and too awesome for actual children, adding, 'If you allow a child to watch this show, you are a bad parent or guardian.' "
- The New York Times, Thursday, March 31, 2005

" 9:30-10pm Wonder Shozen (MTV2, TV-MA)- Why does MTV bury this hilariously twisted Sesame Street parody on its bastard son of a network? Because numbers and letters rumble while a Jewish J and an Arab 8 have puppet sex that would make Triumph the Insult Comic Dog blush? Or because an angelic tot reporter asks Wall Streeters, 'When the revolution comes, where will you hide?' Sure this show, as dark as the bottom of Oscar the Grouch's trash can, will give your inner child nightmares, but it's the only way he'll learn.
- Josh Wolk, Entertainment Weekly

Check out clips of Season 1 here.

The new season starts March 31st @ 9:30 p.m.

My favorite was the "Beat Kidz" segment in the butcher shop.

"Who's going to pay for all of this meat? I mean spiritually?"

"She must think I ride with the devil. But the devil rides alone."

I love this show, but I can do without the animated bits for the most part, although I do like DOG OBGYN. I was planning on getting this, Robot Chicken Season One and the new Ghostface c.d. on Tuesday.

I cannot wait until the 28th.

My sig is a response the creators gave to an interview question on IGN.

Just when you think South Park has scraped the bottom for hilarious tastelessness, along comes Wonder Showzen. Not every episode works, but when it does, there's nothing funnier on television. I wonder how many times the guy with the puppet doing street interviews has been punched.

The very first episode I ever saw had a segment where kids were dancing in front a of a blue screen showing pictures of slavery and the American civil war while singing, "Thanks for making America!" or something to that effect. I never saw that ep again. Did I imagine that?

This question is beneath humor. Therefore, by the transvestitive property, so are we pinned beneath transvestites. It burns, friend, as their wolfencrabs are in bloom. Listen... You can hear them scream... "Tonight-- we bike!"
Hilarious!

Who are you running from?

Oh man, the episode where the puppet asks joggers in Central Park that question was brilliant. The puppet and Beat Kidz segments are my favorites, followed closely by "Funny/Not Funny". And of course, the Q&A segments with the kids are fucking brilliant.

Q: What is heaven?

A: (little girl looking sad) I'll never know.

I never saw this, but how does it compare to the late, lamented "TV Funhouse"?
There's a strong similarity, actually. Although TV Funhouse had more of an element of the host wanting to make a kids' show, and the puppets not going along with it. I'd say at their best, the two shows are about neck in neck for making soda shoot out of my nostrils.

I got a copy of this this week. Very very hit and miss, much like the Adult Swim stoner sensibilty where if it doesn't know a joke, weird is just as good a seque out of it. "Beat Kids" is the highlight of any episode, but the animated stuff is generally trying too hard. Happy to have it though.

The jokes don't always work, but when they do they're pretty good.

My favorite bit is the kid having a nam flashback.

The "Patience" episode definitely accomplished what it was going for. I wanted to slam my head in to the TV after watching that. I knew what was happening, yet at the same time I was convinced that they couldn't sustain it the entire 30 minutes. Boy was I wrong.

Slaves built the pyramids. Slaves build the Parthenon. Slaves built America. This is your song. Thank you slaves!

From the Ocean episode.

Oh man, thanks for confirming. I swear, I watched mini-marathon after mini-marathon and never saw that episode again. Glad I'm not going crazy!

I know I've seen this show called "Kids Show" at some point. It was the same thing, only the opening credits had it labelled "Kids Show" as opposed to "Wonder Showzen." Why is this? Did I dream it?

The lyrics to Wonder Showzen's opening song repeats, "Kids Show. Kids Show." I have also seen this image, with the words "Kids Show" instead of "Wonder Showzen". Maybe that was its original name.

Kids Show was the original pilot. You can still find it on the Internet. I think I found it at Milk and Cookies.

MTV, I'd wager, was not comfortable calling it "Kids Show." And understandably so.
