THIEF on FX - Page 2

Last week's episode was pretty good. The pace was heightened, more tension, more action. I think the finale's going to be pretty good, and that's just banking on James Remar.

One thing I noticed about the show is that it remains current. Every episode has at least one casual reference that sets in the present climate. For instance, during the last episode Elmore commandeers the truck, detains the driver, and then says something about the Patriot Act says he doesn't have to tell the guy anything. And there was a scene in an earlier episode where Linda Hamilton and Andre Braugher were discussing how Hurricane Katrina affected businesses in New Orleans. It gives the show a good undercurrent of relevance and context.

Any word on a new season or is this a one shot deal?

Sort of hoping for more of a slam bang finish but that probably wouldn't have fit the tone of the show. There should have been better closure for the hitman. It's hard for me to be real happy that Braugher gets away with his stepdaughter since she was just too annoying for her own good.

Don't know if the show will be back but I could see a scenerio where Braugher sets up shop somewhere else trying to put together another heist. If so, I hope Remar comes back to try and stop him.

I'll admit, I was still seething from getting fucked over in an exam earlier in the day, so that may have tainted my judgement of it, but overall it was pretty good. They certainly seemed to end it in a way that says "that's all folks", but I'm sure there's a few things they could do to bring the gang all back together if they do get a second season. I need just to set aside a weekend and go back and watch this whole season in a weekend and see how it works then.

Some shows get 13-24 episodes to tell their story. This one had to do it all in 6. This was still a nice run at it. I was thinking I would like to see another season, but they killed off most of the characters.

One way I think they could do it (some might not like it) is to tell Nick's story from the past on forward to this season. They could go back a few years. That way you could bring back Linda Hamilton's character, Nick's wife, and Gabo.

I figured that if they got picked up again, they could just say that Gabo was found by some homeless person before he died from his wound. Then they would have two major players and the season could start out with it's focus on the hunt for Nick, then work it's way from there.

So what are people's guesses to the chances of this show getting picked back up? I'm leaning towards it not being renewed.

I'd bet money on it not being renewed. The first episode had the lowest ratings for any FX premiere and they went downhill from there. Here's an article about it with some interesting comments from Braugher:

I had a sense it wasn't doing that well, mainly by how little reaction it got on the boards. While I don't think it was in the class of "The Shield" or "Rescue Me" it certainly was a good show and both Braugher and Rooker did some stellar work between them.

The show may have suffered a bit from its slow pace for some viewers, but outside of the repitition involving the scenes with the step-daughter I never found the show dull.

I'd probably put it in the same league as "Kingpin." Not the best show of its time but worth watching nonetheless.

It's a shame. I can't believe that the ratings were so low. I know when I saw the promos I was excited for this and it seemed like other fans of The Shield would go for it also.

Kind of an underwhelming finale to me.

It had such tight buildup and then just kind of fizzled.

This show had a lot of potential, but I can understand how it did bad in the ratings.

I think it does deserve a second season, but if it does get cancelled, I'm not going to miss it in the way that I miss Lucky.

The way the show progressed, it didn't seem like it could go on for another season. Not that it would anyway, with the poor ratings and all.

It's too bad, though. I thought the show had a great cast, a solid script, and very nice production value. Maybe people thought that it just didn't have enough action or something. After all, it did move very carefully for a six-episode series.

The series finale I liked. There wasn't any kind of melodramatic reckoning or plot twist that rattled me, but that would have seemed contrived anyway. End it gracefully, I say.
