David E. Kelley has landed format rights to buzzworthy BBC series Life on Mars and set it up at as a one-hour drama at ABC, reports Variety.

"Mars," from U.K.-based Kudos Film & Television, revolves around a modern-day police detective who finds himself transported back to 1973. Kelley will write and executive produce the pilot via his company's overall deal at 20th Century Fox TV.

Stephen Garrett and Jane Featherstone of Kudos will also serve as executive producers. ABC has ordered a pilot for fall 2007, with a significant penalty attached if the project doesn't move forward to series.

The project came together relatively quickly following the BBC premiere of "Mars" in January. The U.K. show generated big ratings -- more than 7 million viewers its first night -- and an order for a second season.

"Mars," which takes its title from the David Bowie track, focuses on Det. Sam Tyler, who gets into a near-fatal car wreck shortly after his girlfriend is kidnapped by a serial killer. He wakes up in 1973, still a cop but in a completely alien universe.

Further complicating matters: The first case he tackles in the 1970s seems to have links to the serial killer who nabbed his girlfriend. Viewers don't know whether Sam has gone crazy, traveled through time or is actually still in a coma and dreaming the whole thing.
This show is way too good for David E. Kelley. Kelley is crap. Even his best shows crap out pretty soon. They start out all quirky and lovable and then they kick into maudlin-overdrive and it destroys its praise and ratings as fast as it was able to build them. Fuck, this show is too good for AMERICA. Barring phenomenal praise for the U.S. version, I'll just stick with the original.

Has anyone who's seen the whole show wanna give a total overview? Ever since I first read about this, the first thing I thought was, "This is gonna be an American series."

hearing the concept of this show, david e. kelley sounds like the wrong guy to be remaking this show.

I've seen the first three episodes and they were all good. I'm curious as to how long it will be before before an American production company lifts the idea.
Sadly I called this. I really don't see this lasting more than a season unless they flesh out the concept a lot more with a couple of decent season long subplots.

The fact they left the show open to a second series annoyed the pubes off me. Over the course of the series it went from a fascinating time travel headfuck - sort of Twelve Monkeys by way of The Sweeney - and ended up as an ironic Seventies cop show, with the constantly dangled carrot of the true nature of Sam's predicament never resolved.

I fear a follow-up UK series more than I fear a US remake.

I can see at least one good thing involvd with the US remake- there will probably be a R1 release of the original British series.

Reading through that original thread, I can't believe it, but I totally called it:
