The weekend before last, the telecast was so good that my wife commented on how much it had improved since the beginning of the season. Then, the announcer said, "And we'd like to thank X for sitting in as our guest director/producer/guy who calls the shots (?). I started my career with him 23 years ago, and it's great to work with him agani."

A-ha!

Alas, the telecast is now back to normal.

Anyway, I can't make a weeknight game now that school's back in session, so we'll probably troop up to Camden Yards for one last baseball fix this weekend.

Ha! That's funny. Kind of sad, but funny. I haven't watched many games on TV this year (of course, I haven't been ABLE to, thanks Angelos!), but have been mostly unimpressed. That's something that needs to be fixed right away -- there's no way I'll watch a bunch of telecasts if they're that shoddy.

I love Camden, but I haven't been since the Nats came to town. It's completely impossible to get up there from here on a weeknight, and I haven't made much of an effort to make a weekend game since I already have 20 Nats games a year to make. Have fun!

So Long, Frank

Boz wrote Robinson's valediction in today's Post, so it's basically over for Frank.

He was a lousy manager, but a hell of a guy. So long, Mr. Robinson.

Yeah, I'm sorry to see Frank go -- not many fans are fortunate enough to be able to see a living legend each and every time they go to the park. But you're right -- as a field manager, Frank stunk. And if the franchise is headed in a new, younger, direction, Frank's clearly not the man to lead them. I'm sure they'll take a long look at Joe Girardi, if the Cubs don't get him first.

I remain very concerned, however, about the GM situation. I really thought Kasten would toss Bowden at first opportunity, but that obviously isn't the case. And Bowden is terrible. He's got one of the worst track records of any GM over the last decade, if not THE worst. Look at Cincy -- that franchise is just now starting to crawl out of the hole he put them in through years of stupid contracts and general mismanagement.

Maybe Bowden will prove me wrong -- lord knows I've been wrong before. But bad GMs tend to stay bad, and get even worse the more money they have to play with. If Lerner opens up the checkbook over the next couple of seasons and Bowden doesn't act wisely, one or two bad offseasons could hobble the team for the next 6 or 7 years. Let's hope that doesn't happen...

Anyway, not a great year for the Nats, but a fun year of baseball. I probably went to 16 or 17 games in person this year, and I always have a good time. So I guess pitchers and catchers report in only 5 1/2 months or so, right???
