Kidding. But the studio is re-re-releasing it with an additional 8 minutes of footage! HUZZAH! Eight minutes! I'm going to sell all my DVD's I own just so I can buy this one with EIGHT EXTRA MINUTES! I wonder how amazing these EIGHT MINUTES is going to be... I wonder if some more Somolians will die in these EIGHT EXTRA MINUTES! I'm gonna go celebrate for EIGHT MINUTES in order to fully take in this amazing announcement from Sony about re-re-releaseing Black Hawk Down with EIGHT MINUTES more of footage in it!

Well, the cast was so massive... perhaps there was an actor who's entire part was snipped.

Still waiting on my six hour "Thin Red Line".
Jesus, first the bare bones, then the 3-Disc set with deleted scenes, and now this?

Don't forget the Superbit. Which didn't have the EIGHT MINUTES of footage in it.
Yeah, I too want my 6 hour cut of The Thin Red Line.

My 3 disc special edition of Black Hawk Down is one of the best special editions I own; it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Though I will be interested to hear about what's new in this extended edition (ALL 8 MINUTES OF IT), and I may Netflix it just to see for myself some day (if that's possible).

I can't wait to see the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven also, but I'm not going to buy it, because the movie just wasn't that good.

Is anyone else getting serious warning flags with all these Extended Editions coming out lately, just before Blu-Ray and HD are being introduced? I honestly believe they are going for one more double dip before people start buying the new formats (bastards).

Would it be too much to ask for a not-so-sucky DVD release of BLACK RAIN?
I have not seen this movie in years and absolutely love it. Since I don't own it on DVD maybe this would be a good time to get it.
Why is it that the UK 3 discer of Black Hawk down costs £6.97, but the R1 version is around $40-$50?????

Yes, please. Yes, please. Yes, please.
There's a guy who was a former student of my mother's and also graduated from my high school who appeared in this film.

He played Private Clay Othic, who I believe is the guy who picks up the detached hand and puts it in a pocket in his pants right after Kim Coates gets blown in half.

He also appeared in Hannibal as a mail delivery guy or something.

I'll agree with that sentiment on 'Black Rain' as well. One of Michael Douglas' best roles. Great flick.

Someone else mentioned the long in development special edition of 'Blade Runner' that we all heard about a lifetime ago...any news on that?

I have fond memories of watching that film with my mom. There's no better way to bond with a parent than over Andy Garcia getting his head chopped off.

There's no way in hell I'm buying this BLACK HAWK DOWN Extended Edition. The 3-Disc Deluxe Edition is easily one of the top five best DVDs ever created, which already has the deleted scenes that they'll mostly likely be adding to this new version. No thanks.

What's up with Sony? They used to be good but it seems like they've completely lost their minds with all of these re-re-re-re-releases.
The motorcycle chase in Black Rain is a great action scene.
Wait, how much extra footage does this new release have?

I wanna know what happened to the special edition of BLADE RUNNER that Ridley Scott mentioned was gonna be released ages ago.
The Blade Runner special edition has been rumoured for ages, but the film has some rights issues that prevent it from being released. I read somewhere that some producer who owns the rights to BR doesn't want the dvd to be released for whatever reason.

From the Digital Bits in January:

Quote:
"And finally, here's a bit of news that's going to get a lot of you excited (and I made a point to specifically ask about this title, believe me)... Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982) is currently on track for release as a multi-disc special edition in time for its 25th anniversary in 2007. The release is far from certain (as usual, there's a lot more that I can't post about this title yet - think of the old saying, "Loose lips sink ships"), but Warner says that work is proceeding, most of the key players are involved and things are "looking good" for release next year. We'll see."

Warner Bros. said the same thing about Blade Runner back in 2002. They actually have sat on quite a bit of their library. Until recently many of their musicals were nowhere to be seen. They also have been delaying Branagh's "text true" version of Hamlet for the last few years. It was supposed to be out March 2006.
Text true, is that pretty much the same thing as 'unabridged'?

Yeah...."text-true" sounds cooler though! Why be concise when you can be hip?

It's not Warner Bros who have been sitting on it, it's Jerry Perenchio and Bud Yorkin i.e. The BR Partnership. There's never been an official announcement of the film, the closest coming from Ridley Scott, which turned out to be premature due to the aforementioned issues with the BR partnership.

A good action homage to the absolutely great THE YAKUZA, which so badly needs to be released on DVD in any goddamn package. Directed by Pollack, cowritten by Robert Towne and Paul Schrader. One of my favorite underseen Mitchum roles, and a 15-years-younger Ken Takakura kicks ass with a sword. Also starring Brian Keith's amazing wardrobe.

Sorry, it's just a huge gripe of mine. No "The Yakuza" DVD, I mean, not Uncle Bill's phenomenal pants collection. BLACK HAWK DOWN -- excellent film, but I've never felt compelled to own it. Maybe if there was some additional footage... but how much would be the right amount?
I just saw THE YAKUZA recently and it was pretty cool and should have a DVD release. As a big BLACK RAIN fan it was fun to see Takakura in THE YAKUZA.

BLACK RAIN is such a good looking film and in this poster’s opinion one of Ridley Scott’s best efforts. My fear is that SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME will get a loaded DVD before BLACK RAIN (apologies to Berenger).
You've got to be kidding me, the 3-disk BHD is one of the best DVD packages I own. No chance I'll buy a new one. Bizarre.

That KINGDOM OF HEAVEN extended package is mine day one, though.

And Black Dawn while we're at it. No wait, I still wouldn't buy it.

I thought it was somewhat average. The action is a little old-fashioned, and there are way too many interior scenes. I hate it when movies spend most of their time on sets instead of showing you the exotic location they're supposedly filming in.

Don't forget Mr. Baseball with your boy Magnum.
THE YAKUZA wasn’t mind blowing and Mitchum seemed a little long in the tooth for the role but I still found it interesting to watch. You’re right that there were a lot of interior locations which may not have been a great move considering the possibilities.

I only saw MR. BASEBALL once and didn’t think much of it. I wouldn’t mind giving it a second shot if it were ever on cable. Not only does it pair Selleck with Takakura but Dennis Haysbert was in it, though I really wish he had kept his MAJOR LEAGUE accent for that role.

I would hardly call it a great film, but having spent a good length of time in Japan and following Japanese baseball I can say that it is, for Hollywood, a surprisingly accurate representation of the subject matter. Definitely a more realistic examination of the culture clash than Gung Ho, and maybe even Lost in Translation.

Classic Molinaro!

Exactly.

As for the great motorcycle chase scene, am I the only one who thinks Jan DeBont -Black Rain's DP coincidentally- ripped it off completely for Tomb Raider 2?!

And no, I'm in no way buying a Black Hawk Down EE unless it's something special like the Gladiator one (which I doubt, since it looks like more of a Tears of the Sun or The Patriot EE situation). In that case, um, maybe I'd make someone buy it for me... *lowers head in shame*

Wow. I thought I was the only one who's waiting for a six-hour version of "The Thin Red Line". Is this for real or is is just a rumor?

Michael,

There is probably easily six hours worth of footage that could be used to construct a narrative. Malick tends to shoot a ton then make the movie in the editing room. But there is no six hour cut to my knowledge.
Not to harp, but I gotta come back to THE YAKUZA. For one thing, Mitchum's long-in-the-toothiness is one of the things I like about the film, and that most of them are well past their prime and a little burned out. These characters have histories, and most of the present plot is tied to events decades old, but you're not bludgeoned by backstory; Towne and Schrader (and Pollack) fairly deftly fold the exposition into the narrative.

It's also a great mash-up of genres. Hard-Boiled Detective, Tragic Love Story, Cross-Cultural Exploration, Mob Drama, Action Movie -- with guns [I]and[I] katanas. The film covers a lot of ground.

...I can't disagree on the overuse of interiors. Pollack's always been more talky than showy. But I do think he does a great job with the final action set piece, Mitchum and Takakura tearing the house to shreds with revolver and sword, respectively.

Maybe it's not a classic, but I do think it's terribly underappreciated, especially by whoever it is that can but for some damn reason hasn't put it out on DVD yet. Not to harp on that or anything.

Thank you for the info. I heard the rumor around the time that it was released into theaters.

Since it was discussed a little in this thread I'll post this bit of rumor from thedigitalbits here:

Also, on the standard DVD front, word has reached us that Paramount is working on a new special edition of Ridley Scott's Black Rain for release later in 2006.
Hope it gets as much time and effort put into it as some of Scott's more recent DVD SEs.

Sweet. I just hope Douglas does a commentary full of more wacky slurs.

"Just wish they got a Nip in this movie who spoke fucking English."

I won't be going for the triple-dip of BHD. I like the movie but there aren't many I'd buy second copies of. I was tempted by the Gladiator set but the lack of the DTS EX score put me off. Rented it instead.

I would love to see better releases of Black Rain & Blade Runner though simply because I've always held off buying the bare bones versions. As for The Yakuza, I watched that movie to death when I was younger. It'd be good to catch it again now & see how it holds up.
