Daylight Savings Time

This probably means nothing to most of you in normal parts of the country, but in Indiana, we just got around to adopting this again, after years and years of contentious debate. I understand the concept completely, it's not rocket surgery, but Christ you would think that the state just implemented the metric system with the outcry from the people.

I will admit that all day I've been slightly confused and almost missed most of my shows because I'm still living an hour behind.
Rocket surgery has lost its position as a prestigious calling since the scientists took over. Now you can't walk through any unemployment office without bumping into a few. Nuclear physicians, same thing.

Brilliant.

Funnily enough, (and I hate to be the guy I'm about to be) but it's Daylight Saving Time. No 's' on Saving. I've never lived without DST, so it seems normal to me, but a lot of people I know are just completely flummoxed this time of year.

I don't mind that you're that guy, just shows you how I've never had to deal with it.

And I think it's spelled Nucular, dummies.

I went to Purdue, located in West Lafayette, IN, for the uninitiated, and no one bothered to tell me they didn’t take part in daylight saving. So my first semester, the switch back to standard time happens and I’m the only one who changed his clock. I was supposed to meet someone to work on homework and I was an hour late.

It was always fun to get the Indiana folks riled up about daylight saving. They thought the rest of the country was nuts for changing their clocks. The subject was more contentious than gays in the military or whether Bobby Knight should be fined/jailed/congratulated for his latest outburst.

The whole thing is an antiquated concept. We don't need the extra daylight for farming anymore. It doesn't save an appreciable amount of energy. And yet they want to extend it.

Just a whole lot of effort for nothing.
First time in a long time I've had to observe DST. Lived in Arizona before moving to Indiana.

And I agree, it's a lot of effort for nothing. A farmer is going to wake up when the sun comes up, not according to the time on an alarm clock.

Because of Congress's moronic decision to change the dates that this occurs, every computer in the U.S. Operating System needs to be updated to account for the date switches. Now while no where near a Y2K type of mod thanks to DST not really being a chip level function on most systems, it's still unnecessary work/headaches for the computer industry.

I hate Spring DST. I was out with some friends until about 2:30, and then came home because I had to be up at 5:00. I thought I'd be fine with two hours of sleep, because I can usually function well enough with 2-3 hours. So as I lie down in bed at 3:00, I realize it's actually 4:00. Screw you, Spring DST. Fall DST is totally cool by me, though.
I'd be fine with spring DST if they didn't rip it from my weekend while I'm sleeping. It should go into effect in the middle of a weekday, right about an hour before I'm supposed to leave work.
Luckily most businesses in Indiana let it slide with most of their employees.

How it will go next year? Who knows.
Not only did I lose an hour over the weekend, but this week, the college I work at is on Spring Break and since I am considered Administrative staff, I have to come in and work from 8:30am-5pm this week only, when my normal shift is 3:30pm-11pm almost 9 months out of the year. While I don't consider myself much of a morning person, I usually am in better spirits by this time of day, even when I wake up much earlier than I prefer. I am not feeling all that great today due to a sinus/ear infection or cold of some sort, so my general demeanor is diminished today.

I still had to force a call on mine, though.

What kind of computers do you work on?

All of the computers I have used since the time change have not even prompted me about the time change... it was automatic (as it should be).
There's a specfic Indiana time zone listed which might throw things off. I know I had to change every single computer in my building to the new EDT.

That's why I mentioned the "Operating System". The time switch gets handled auto-magically with windows/linux/solaris/etc. But now the O.S. needs to be updated to account for the date it occurs shift. And there are many other device types out there (e.g. Hand-Held scanner units, etc.) that may or may not have time-sync operations with servers, so also require O.S./software updates.

My co-worker has been working on trying to get our PBX to update the time. Our telephony administrator (and my boss) is away at a conference, so they have been communicating back and forth about it, as some people here at the school find the clock on the phone display to be very important. Frankly, it's not that hard to add one hour to any voicemails that come in.
So, wait...are you saying for the past few years Indiana has been functioning in a different time than the rest of the nation for six months out of the year? Like, if you drove from Ohio to Indiana, the hours would become jumbled?

Sheesh. How do you watch TV?
I suggest that instead of springing forward one hour we fall back 23. If we're going to fuck with the timestream we might as well go whole hog.

During the summer, I could watch all the shows I wanted. I could watch the Indianapolis station which was on Central, and then the Louisville channels, which were on Eastern. So if a show was scheduled for 8pm, I could watch it at 7pm on the Louisville station and then watch another show scheduled for 8pm at 8pm on the Indianapolis station.

I loved it... now it's gone!

I set my alarm clock so that in the morning I could catch MacGyver when I wake up. But when I turned on the tv, there's was Ride With Funkmaster Flex on. So, fuck Daylight Savings Time for making me miss MacGyver.

Ride with Funkmaster Flex sounds damn intriguing, though.

Indiana had the right idea...DST is inane. The excuse these days is that "it makes sure the kids are safe, walking home in daylight."

Ok, idiots. Now you just made the pedophiles get up for that dark early morning trip to school. Big change.

Our PBX had major problems this morning, because it controls when we get calls from other regions around the world. Since it hadn't changed correctly, we had massive crashes on our help desk lines. Whee.

Indiana's main reason to finally join the party was to put our businesses in line with most of the out of state businesses they deal with, and to avoid the constant confusion about what fucking time it is here.
I missed my first class because of this today.

Yet counties around Louisville and Chicago are on those respective time zones.

Problem NOT solved.

I live in rural Ohio and my dad is a farmer. DST is actually more useful now then it was 40 or 50 years ago. There are a lot more part-time or hobby farmers now then ever before and DST gives them the extra hour to work in daylight outside of their normal jobs. My dad leaves for work at 7 and gets home at 4:30 so that extra hour of light every night gives him a chance to get more done. With fewer and fewer career farmers DST is becoming more useful.
Or that is just my opinion and I'm not right in the head.
I was late for work because my procrastinating ass didn't set the clocks ahead yesterday.

Son of the bitch. My cell phone has the wrong time, and I can't figure out how to change it.

Have you turned it off and then back on? That's fixed mine.
Oh. Thanks.
Ha. Yeah... you're not the only person I've had to tell that to this week.
That's classic. "Turn the... cell phone.... off?"

Ironically, I found out that I was supposed to push the clocks forward while buying a new watch. The clerk set the watch for me, and I was like, "Isn't it 3:30 pm and not 4:30?" Luckily I didn't have to work this weekend, as I definitely would've been an hour late!
Yeah, I didn't realize DST was going into effect until I saw it mentioned on my mother's local paper this past weekend. Then I thought "Spring Forward" and was like "Shit! I lose an hour of sleep!"
