Let the bodies hit the floor! says professor

Says disease will "cleanse the scourge of mankind," but AIDS too slow.

Quote:
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Talk radio and blogs are taking aim at a University of Texas biology professor because of a published report suggesting he advocates death for most of the human population as a means of saving the Earth.

However, Eric Pianka says his remarks about his beliefs were taken out of context, that he was just raising a warning that deadly disease epidemics are a threat if population growth isn't contained.

"What we really need to do is start thinking about controlling our population before it's too late," he said Monday. "It's already too late, but we're not even thinking about it. We're just mindlessly rushing ahead breeding our brains out."

Pianka, who has gotten vitriolic e-mails and even a death threat, said he believes the Earth would be better off if there were fewer people using up natural resources and destroying habitats.

The furor began when The Gazette-Enterprise of Seguin, Texas, reported Sunday on two speeches Pianka made last month to groups of scientists and students about vanishing animal habitats and the exploding human population.

That report was circulated widely and posted on "The Drudge Report," then quickly became talk radio fodder.

The Gazette-Enterprise quoted Pianka as saying disease "will control the scourge of humanity. We're looking forward to a huge collapse."

It said he weighed the killing power of various diseases such as bird flu and HIV but decided neither would yield the needed results.

"HIV is too slow. It's no good," he said.

Pianka said that doesn't mean he wants most humans to die.

However, Forrest Mims, an amateur scientist, author and chairman of the Texas Academy of Science's environmental science section, told The Associated Press there was no mistaking Pianka's disdain for humans and desire for their elimination in the speech he heard.

"He wishes for it. He hopes for it. He laughs about it. He jokes about it," Mims said. "It's got to happen because we are the scourge of humanity."

Pianka was expressing his own opinion, University of Texas spokesman Don Hale said.

"Dr. Pianka has First Amendment rights to express his point of view," Hale said. "We have plenty of faculty with a lot of different points of view and they have the right to express that point of view, but they're expressing their personal point of view."
Speaking as an unabashed misanthrope, I'd like to give this man some funding.

He's right, it's just not fuzzy and nice to say so publicly, especially within earshot of people who are against masturbation and for eternal feeding tubes.

Some people can't see Earth's exponential population explosion as anything but a testament to the power of their god or a chance to recruit more souls. Quality of life doesn't seem to enter their minds.

Sounds like a mission for 007. Better locate this quack's secret biological weapon factory quick.

No need to worry about population growth. Eventually WWIII will break out and then it'll be just the roaches.

I was thinking more along the lines of Hugo Drax. Where he fitted in that Aryan breeding farm project of his I've yet to work out. Maybe he was a hermaphrodite.

You're thinking about 'Rainbow 6'

Desslar nailed it...we'll wipe out most of the population by the imminent WWIII. Problem solved....pass the cheetos.

That's right! I remember now, some crazy scientists released an Ebola-like virus at the Sydney Olympics. That was actually one of Clancy's better recent efforts, as I recall.

It was a better, more streamlined book of his, yes...but it still relied way too much on preposterous coincidences to drive the plot. It's lightyears ahead of 'Red Rabbit' and 'Teeth of the Tiger', though.

'Rainbow 6' would actually make a pretty decent movie, as the action set pieces were very well done.

Agreed on all points.

I'm not suprised at the idiotic, anti-human responses here. And I'd like to say that you are all perfectly suited to reduce the number of people on the planet by one.

This sounds like an invitation for us to kill you. You lazy man, do it yourself.

I'd hate to call someone an uptight ultra-serious old fart on HERE...so what's your phone number?

Overpopulation is the elephant in the room that no one wants to discuss. All attempts to raise the quality of life for folks anywhere in the world are doomed if we don't get a handle on the population explosion.

When a species explodes in growth nature usually finds a way to reverse the tide...judging by the rapid rate at which even the more basic diseases are becoming immune to anti-biotics, and the rapid mutating ability of filo-viruses, who knows what lies around the corner.

Oh please, Angelo Mike. Why don't you tell us how the free market would solve this problem?

Thank you, Bob. That brought a smile to my face. Whenever I think of 'Soylent Green', I remember Phil Hartman in full-on Heston mode screaming 'It's people!!!!!!!' on SNL. For some reason, that bit killed me.

As a side note...when I first saw the title on this thread, I though we were going to be reading a commentary on that crappy nu-metal band Drowning Pool...I'm so glad that I was mistaken.

Can we please find a way to convert the elderly into autofuel? Running out of fuel in your VW Silverage? Pop your trunk, grab an old lady and toss her in.

VW: Grandparents Wanted.

That whole thing about the "population explosion" is just something the industrialized countries made up, so they could feel better about themselves. People all around the world are starving? Natural recources are running out? The climate's going crazy? Well, there's nothing WE can do, really - it's that darn "population explosion".

This guys theories fit the picture.

I thought Rainbow Six was pretty awful myself. There's no tension in Clancy's books anymore. I don't think any of the heroes were even injured.

It read like a series of unimportant episodes, while we wait for the actual plot to begin. I found it annoying.

Yeah, I'm on an extended vacation from Clancy at the moment. I tried to start Bear and the Dragon but the relentless "USA is #1!" hubris made me nauseous. Also the plot is slow as molasses.

Liberal Kook. When the Earth decides it wants to get rid of us it will! I for one would like to extend a heartfelt welcome to our new Cockroach Overlords.

Oh, man. I could not *stand* that book. Threw it down the back of the bookcase after a week. Early Clancy is the best.

Amen to that. I loved Red Storm Rising, but that was a long time ago. I guess Clear and Present Danger was a good one too.

'Red Storm Rising' is easily my favorite Clancy book. My favorite Ryan-verse book is probably 'Cardinal of the Kremlin'. I can't put my finger on exactly WHICH book it is that he started to put out CRAP, but I think it was around the time of 'The Sum of All Fears' or so. I've read them all, and the last 2 have been absolute SHIT.

The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement

I've been pushing a 1:1 birth-to-adoption ratio for the family we're (the gf & I) looking to start.
