Kingdom of Heaven director's cut reviews

A 4-disc Director's Cut of Kingdom of Heaven is hitting stores on May 22 and screenings of the film have been taking place. I was disappointed with the theatrical version, there are characters and moments I like, but it doesn't come together as a whole. It sounds like the director's cut changes that and a whole lot more. IGN.com and thedigitalbits.com have reviews up.

You're right. Collider has some good coverage. They're even going to post an mp3 interview from the screening in the next few days with Ridley Scott and the writer.

Thanks for the links, I am definitly buying the Director's Cut.
I'm considering buying this. It's only 17.46(??) at amazon.

And they also, you know, hosted the event. Which I was at and enjoyed thoroughly. This is the movie it always should have been, and everything I found problematic with the original is either better or fixed here. This version achieves something close to profundity, the Theatrical cut plays more like an action film that's an anti-action film.

Holy shit, I pre-ordered this at $25. I canceled and re-ordered. You saved me almost 9 bucks. Thanks, wade!
This is really cool. I'm jealous of those who attended the screening. Can't wait to see this.

*Just reserved this at Amazon thanks wade!

You mean Muslims and Christians haven't always gotten along?

I'm pretty stoked for this

Just ordered this from Amazon.com. Thank you so much for the link, Wade.

Collider has their 2 part audio interview with Director Ridley Scott and writer William Monahan up. Just follow the link.

Damn, thanks for the Amazon info, just pre-ordered it from there!
Wade just made Amazon a ton of money thanks to this thread.
I just ordered this myself. Seventeen bucks for four discs??? That's insane.
I'm so glad we didn't have to wait 5 years for this, Kingdom of Heavan was one of my most anticipated films last year and i couldn't help but leave the theater let down. I love big, long epics that get into all the politics and have deeper characters. This is great news!
Going to pre-order this on Amazon next week. That price is insane for 4 discs.
Belated thanks to Wade for the heads up on the great Amazon price. Cannot wait for this.

And I still think Scott probably deserves most of the blame for the theatrical version, rather than Fox.
I was really looking forward to this when it came out in theaters and like most felt it left a lot to be desired (though it was still one of the most beautifully shot films I'd ever seen). Can't fucking wait for the extended cut.
Is the Amazon price likely to go up after May 23?
Sounds like these two versions are night and day. I came out of that theater extremely disappointed last year. I'll have to check this out. But I've been burned too many times before to make an impulse buy.

I was also not all that impressed with the film other than the visuals.

Based on the glowing reviews I've been hearing since the Director's Cut was released theatrically back around the holidays in LA and the $17+ purchase price for a 4-disc set from Amazon, I decided it would be worth an impulse buy.
It's 25 bucks here in my town. That's pretty cheap for a director's cut when compared to the LotR EEs.

EDIT: Never mind, that sounded lame.
I just ordered it from Amazon. The glowing reviews for the director's cut caught my interest and $17 for a 4 disc set is too good to pass up.

(And yes, Nick, I ordered through Chud.)

Cool beans. I always wanted to see the director cut on the big screen but it only played in like 1 theatre in LA (I'm not in the proximity). I have the reg. widescreen but being a fan of Mr. Scott, I'll be getting this.
Went up to $19.97 on Amazon. Thanks for the price break again, Wade!

And to those who missed out... neener.
So the extended director's cut is supposed to be one of Scott's best? That's high praise. I wish I didn't have to buy it to watch it.

Just got it in the mail today after paying the ridiculously low price and I'll be watching it later tonight. Even at $19.97 though, it's still a steal considering what all you get.

I just finished watching it, and I'll make it short.

I would have given a 6.5/10 to the Theatrical version.

This one is a solid 9/10, maybe 9.5. I'll have to check it again.

Just wow.

That good. Now, I really looking forward to it.

I must make an effort to see this. I never saw it in theatres like I had planned and the good word of mouth this new cut is getting makes me want it even more.
The new cut lives up to the hype and thensome. I never did see it in theaters as I had heard about how Scott was unhappy with the cut and I'm anal enough to refuse to see a film on that basis alone. Because of that, I can't comment on how this compares to the theatrical cut, but after viewing this, I honestly can't see how you could remove anything and still have the same film. This film is epic. EPIC. It makes King Kong look like Clerks in terms of scale. At $20, there really isn't any excuse why you shouldn't have this in your DVD collection by the end of the week. I give it a 9.0

If I learned nothing else from this movie, Riddley Scott loves to kill horses.
I agree with Squirrel.

I expected a lot from this movie, both in theater and from this cut. It's better that I expected. The new scenes are fleshing out of these characters and make them stand out and shine in a world where they were lost in the background in the previous cut.

Now, it's probably one of Ridley Scott's best, and one of my top 3 of 2005.
I never saw the theatrical edit because I knew this was coming.

This was amazing, easily one of Ridley Scott's best films, and it's a fucking travesty how this was treated. If released properly, it might have actually (shock! gasp!) done some good.

And I don't know why Edward Norton didn't want to be credited - even with a mask on he turned in a fantastic performance. Kudos go to everyone, in fact, even Orlando Bloom, who does really good work here. And Liam Neeson just continues to be my favorite working actor. "Do you repent of your sins?" "All but one."

And for the first time since LOTR, we have seen a battle in which the visuals (although amazing) take a back seat to actually caring about the outcome.

"What is Jerusalem worth?"

"Nothing! Everything!"
I didn't see this one in the theater, but the overwhelming positive word-of-mouth about the new cut has me on the brink of purchasing the DVD. Ridley Scott is a name worth a blind buy any day.
You assholes convinced me. Purchased.

At first--I did not know it was Norton playing the king. I was amazed with the range he exuded with the mask on. I wanted to hate Bloom for the Troy incident but when I saw in him KOH--I forgave him. Indeed he does good work. All-in-all this movie resounded with passion. Ridley Scott is amazing.

This edition fixed almost every problem that I had with the theatrical release. It turned a middling, muddled film into easily one of the best of last year. Action scenes aside, it hardly even feels like the same movie, and some of the stuff that they left out is astonishing.
TERRIFIC. And well worth the wait and double-dip purchase.
I forced a friend to purchase this one to add to his collection. We'll be watching it sometime this weekend. I'm looking forward to it.

He's fortunate to have a friend like you.

Missed the cheapie Amazon deal but it's still a good buy. I looked around the stores today & not one of them had it! I guess the chains never think to ask movie lovers what they would like to buy! Never mind the good stuff, here's Napoleon Dynashite with "dancing cover"

Please. That should come with a giant glove that slaps the assholes who buy it!

To remind them what a good movie should be right?

... Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Best Buy is selling this for 25 bucks, but I managed to get it for 15, as I used my Reward Zone $10 coupon.

I'll be watching it this weekend.
Yeah it's a lot better now. I can't believe they cut so much out. The stuff with balian's brother, sibylla's kid, etc.

They even cut out little things like balian saying he had fought in a war. It only took a couple of seconds, but they cut it out of the theatrical version for some reason.
I finally saw this last night and was flabbergasted by what was taken out. Especially the whole Sibylla and her son sub plot. I have to hand it to Ridley for making a movie that's this long and not having it feel like a chore to watch.
Hmm I might pick this up. The movie I saw did feel a bit cut up.

It was shredded and torn as I remember correctly.

Still, the best line is "You've taught me a lot about religion, bishop."
