For the past 15 months, Aubry and his team have been working on the upcoming special edition DVD release — Apocalypse Now: The Complete Dossier, a sort of “kitchen sink” version of an Apocalypse Now DVD.

It will include both the original and Redux versions of the film, as well as a wealth of new documentaries that dive deep into the editing, the sound, the music and other aspects of the film’s production.

Aubry is filming some of the bonus features in high-def, for this and for another project, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which will also include a special “art student” viewing option.

“Whenever moments in the film appear that have interesting references to art, a button will appear,” he said. “They can select it, and the film will stop, and they’ll see the storyboard or the painting the setting is based on."

Never been a Bram Stoker's Dracula: Special Edition yet on DVD (just regular and Superbit), so bring it on

That's pretty great about the Apocolypse Now documentaries. My biggest problem with Hearts of Darkness is that it didn't really go into the post-production phase of the film.

Speaking of which, is Hearts of Darkness ever getting a release?

And I'm pretty excited about Dracula. I think it deserves more recognition than it gets. I've refused to buy the DVD after owning the glory of the Criterion laserdisc, which was packed. I kept holding out hope that those features (or their equivalent) would be resurrected for DVD. Here's hoping. I believe it's the last laserdisc I owned that I haven't replaced.

I agree wholeheartedly regarding being slightly excited about a better edition of Dracula. It's a weird and beautiful film with tons of cringeworthy moments and boring watchability. I like it's stylization very much.

Last I heard, Coppola wanted some new edits made to the documentary, to soften some of the harsher moments (like FFC's rant about Martin Sheen's heart attack.) Sounds like a terrible idea. What made HEARTS OF DARKNESS so brilliant was that it boldly showed moments of insanity like that...all in the name of art. I burned my original untampered-with copy to DVD long ago, so I'm covered. But it would be great to have the original version officially released.

I love BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, and I wish Coppola and Sony would just let Criterion port over their LD supplements to DVD. I have to admit, I'm not a big fan of Zoetrope's DVD Lab. Coppola goes around boasting how they're the "Tiffany" DVD boutique. But their menus suck, their authoring is clunky and their extras aren't particularly comprehensive, especially in this day and age.

I would forgive all of that, though, if they simply released APOCALYPSE NOW in its original aspect ratio and color timing...something that has yet to occur on DVD. So far, all we've gotten is Coppola's home video-friendly 2:1 aspect ratio and Storaro's over-over-oversaturated revisionism.

I'd love an SE of TUCKER. But I guess Lucasfilm has to get involved in that as well. Another fine mess.

DRACULA; fuck yes. I've been waiting years for that.

I love that film, too. The cheapskates at Paramount did pony up for a commentary, so I suppose we got lucky.

Didn't the DRACULA laserdisc have alternate edits of some scenes and you could splice the scenes together? Or am I remembering wrong?
No, you're remember right. That was an amazing set.

That "Art student" feature sounds bizarre... it's been almost ten years since I've seen "Dracula"- is that sort of thing that common within the movie?
