ABC planning to give away TV online...for free.

Thread Starter
Just saw this on CNN now, and went looking for a link.

Apparently, they are revamping the website to offer a "theater mode" where you can watch most of their stuff for free....without the ability to skip through the ads.

There was a big discussion about this sort of stuff happening online somewhere on this board, but it looks like ABC is striking first. I wonder how this affects the Itunes deal?

no link yet, and i have to get myself to class. sorry for now!

Right. It's a Disney thing more than anything else. ABC is just following lead.

I'm really hoping this lives up to the potential, they just have to beware of a few possible problems.

1) Quality of the video- As much as I love YouTube, the quality isn't something I want to watch my show on. If they can get it closer to something like Comedy Central's Motherload, than I'll be happy.

2) Length of the Ads- I don't mind watching ads, but I'm hoping they aren't going to be 4-5 minutes in legnth.

3) Software needing to be installed - I don't want to have to download some special player that Disney makes just so I can watch their shows.

I second that.

If anyone is interested, here's a link to the recent discussion of downloading TV:

I think that ABC is taking a big step in the right direction.

I agree that this is a step in the right direction, but as someone else said, there are many things that could make this a bad option, especially compared to the current itunes format.

Specificaly, no specialized player and decent video quality are the things I want most.

And honsetly, I may be in the minority here, but I'd rather pay 4 bucks, and get a giant hd version of the show. Any streaming will be a let down to me, as I feel its a very flawed technology (and I have had a t1 the last 4 years), especially if it ment to REPLACE the current iTunes, etc.

I with you on the iTunes business model. $2 is a fair enough price to have my own episode of Lost of The Office without commercials and without having to worry about buffering or other possible snags. Sure, iTunes could up the resolution or calm down on the DRM, but I ike that direction better than the streaming path. (I should point out my bias in that my college campus has an ungodly horrible internet set up, making streaming videos near impossible.)
