You guys are good with computers, and I need software help...

Ok, so I've been exclusively a mac user for the last few years, and I recently bought a crappy (REAL crappy) windows laptop for one or two things I wanted to try out that you can't do with a mac.

So, I was running around on the internet the other day and I downloaded the IE 7 Beta. Unfortunately, one of the things I bought the laptop to do isn't compatible with the beta, which kinda puts me up a creek. I've been trying to figure out how to downgrade to IE 6, but all my searching has only found me IE SP 1, which always says that it's not meant for XP users.

Can one of CHUD's many technically brilliant posters give me hand?

I suggest installing Firefox instead. Grab it at : http://www.mozilla.com/

If you insist on using IE, here's the uninstall from M$:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Check Show Updates at the top of the dialog box.
4. Scroll down the list to Windows XP Software Updates, select Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2Preview, and then click “Change/Remove.”

If “Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview” does not exist, run %windir%\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$\spuninst\spuninst.e xe. You need to have “view hidden folders” enabled. %windir% is your Windows installation directory, which is normally ‘C:\Windows’ on most systems.

Can you only use an IE browser for whatever it is you need to do, or can you get firefox?

Thanks for the help.

I'm actually a Firefox user, but the damn Pennsylvania Bar Application is only compatible with IE 6...No Firefox, no Opera, No Safari, no Netscape...etc. Asinine.

I was a natural at windows 2000, and XP is just a bit alien to me, so I appreciate the guidance.

Where are you reading this at? I think you may be misreading. Intenet Explorer is a download for any other OS besides XP, but if you install the XP OS, IE 6 SP1 is automatically included, so there is no need to install it or download it. But it is certainly compatible, and if you've installed the IE 7 Beta you can certainly download the earlier version and replace the new.

Alright...I guess that settles it for me. Thanks for all the quick replies, I'm always amazed by how helpful the Chewers are as a community.

No problem. Here's the bill:

Issue: Browser Difficulty

Solution: Internet Explorer IE 6 Download

Words Typed..................71 x $5.00 = $355.00

Time Spent.............5 (min) x $10.00 = $50.00

Tax..........................405.00 x 6.5% = $23.73

Total.......................455.00 + 26.33 = $481.33

I accept Paypal, Mastercard, and Visa.

This is absolutely fucking typical. COmpatible with a browser which doesn't even conform to web standards.

No doubt. I use this all the time.

I'm sure you do. But I'm fairly sure that the reason why the Pennsylvania Bar Application is only compatible with IE 6 is precisely because IE doesn't conform to web standards. If it did, then the Pennsylvania Bar Application would be compatible with any browser.

IE 6 supports current web standards (HTML 4.X, etc.). The problem is it also has IE only features, as Firefox has Firefox only features, Opera has (etc.).

The Pennsylvania Bar Application itself, either utilizes some IE only features (Active X controls,Chromeless windows ), or features that differ between the browsers (Modal Dialog windows, etc.) and were too lazy to cross-browser implement the javascript for it. More likely, they probably just stuck a browser check in, despite the fact that their application is already cross-browser compatible.
